I know y’all hate long posts, but if you’re going to read one today, read this.
This is Denis Ten. He was murdered on Wednesday. And he was only 25 years old. I’m sure you have no idea who he was, despite the fact that he was an Olympic bronze medalist, among many other accomplishments.
But why don’t you know who he was? You don’t have to be a figure skater to step outside your little bubble and notice people for once.
You want someone who succeeded in an industry not meant for them? He was just a little Asian kid from a country no one knows. BUT HE MADE IT. In his short life, he accomplished more than you probably ever will.
You want someone who stays true to their heritage and culture? He skated proudly for Kazakhstan while staying true to his Korean heritage.
You want someone who transcends cultural divides to form meaningful relationships? He has so many figure skater friends who are devastated at his death and talking about it. You’re just too self-absorbed to notice.
And yeah, odds are some of you follow Adam Rippon on Twitter. Did you bother to notice his tweet? Or did you just keep scrolling through the commercial break in the middle of your fucking relatable gay content??
Y’all claim to be all for justice, equality, and representation, but you just let him be forgotten. THERE IS NO EXCUSE. If you’re about social justice, you can’t just be about “Oh Adam Rippon is such an icon” or “yay Shiro is queer now.” There is real shit going on and if you want to be woke or just…not hypocritical, fucking show it.
BE ANGRY. He was twenty five fucking years old. He had YEARS of what’s already been an incredible competitive career ahead of him, and beyond that, a long and fulfilling life that he won’t be able to live now. Show that you care as much as you claim to. Don’t let the world forget Denis.
