Thought about replaying MGS1 after I finish MGSV and had a thought. Liquid Snake's ending for both MGS1 and MGSV are similar in the way that he has to choose between two kinds of death.
In MGSV, within the content that didn't make it to the game, Liquid is left with a choice to die by the gun left for him or burn with the napalm. And if not the gun or the napalm, then by the Vocal Cord Parasite. Of course, he doesn't do either and lives to see MGS1 as he's saved by Psycho Mantis.
But in MGS1, his choices are to either defeat Snake and die to FOXDIE, or be defeated by Snake. And if not FOXDIE or Snake, then by the air raid ordered by the U.S. Secretary of Defence.
In both ends, Liquid has had to choose from dying from a bombing, some virus, or "himself," and without interference there is no way out of it. I say "himself" because by both Snakes being clones, by technicality they are one person: Big Boss. I also wouldn't put it behind Liquid to see Snake as himself in some aspect. In his eyes, they're only opposites because of what they've been driven to believe. Hence, "The brother of dark and the brother of light" line in the interrogation room.
I like to interpret this as a way of saying that Liquid had been truly doomed from the start because he believed so. The bombing representing outside powers (Enemies), the virus being his biological drawbacks (His idea of being cursed with his genes, inability to reproduce and overall abnormality between him and the average biology), and the Snakes being himself stunting his own growth (Big Boss being against him as a whole, his idea of being inferior, unable to be like Snake who isn't affected in the way he is about being a clone).
Snake is able to become his own person. Liquid, clinging so hard to his idea of being inferior and fate to be "another Big Boss" had willed it into existence. It even shows in the fact that Liquid was modified to be the superior clone, lied to by false evidence he was meant to find, but his conviction made the lie become true. He became inferior to Solid Snake.
Now, obviously, this is all most likely just a coincidence, and a lot of this is already known, but I like to think and share sometimes. :^)

I don’t really have AS MUCH to make up about him as mantis since most of his story is there in the games lol so here’s just a few things I think about
❗️I don’t rly see liquid as British so much honestly, he spent his most formative years in Africa, around African culture, middle eastern too since he also mentions that specifically, he is fluent in African languages too… idk I just also have never seen him express any sort of nationalism about being British either…
*lol I forgot he and solid weren’t born there for a min too.. for some reason I thought he stayed and solid got sent to the us, either way he spends very little time in the uk and I don’t imagine him having much feelings about it, it’s like ocelot technically being French 😭 I think a lot of ppl forget he was born in France and lived and grew up in Russia…
❗️He and solid are both victims of the same weird circumstances and old men who are obsessed with their father…
Does ocelot see liquid as an individual or just a clone therefore an extension of bb? becoming obsessed with him as he grows older and resembles bb more.. his face the same, his stature the same... Also reinforcing liquids idea already that he's an inferior lifeform, just a copy...
Ocelot keeps him believing these things because it’s useful for him to.
I just always thought it was crazy and super fucked up and weird how ocelot “becomes” liquid like hes literally gotta be obsessed with him and always watching him and studying his behavior to pretend to be him… and then after he dies they use his body for scrap…
I think he felt bad for him at first but it’s ocelot and ocelot is always cooking some kind of scheme that’s what I love about him, he’s a freak. He lets liquid think he’s in control and the leader and the boss until it’s time to take over himself…

❗️I really don’t imagine him being very romantic or attracted to anyone but his bug really.. and that all sort of just happened and I don’t think he puts much thought into it. It doesn’t matter if it’s gay or not. I don’t think liquid would let anyone else touch him either way… He’s got the rationale of a child still he spent his formative years living in a jungle.. it’s kill or be killed and it’s obvious with how he talks still too… I don’t think he cares for any sort of status quo in society since he wants to burn it all down anyway…

i think his self loathing gets worse like yeah breaking mirrors and never wanting to look, his self loathing increases when liquid leaves for the army too and for the first time he is truly entirely alone, even tho he still lives with ocelot and is a menace while he attempts to train him with his psychic power. Mantis is too preoccupied with just wanting to kill people for the fuck of it because he’s sad he wants to hurt people, he wants to kill everyone in the world except his beloved so he can have him back. This will inevitably be his downfall too since he is easily distracted and defeated in battle in the end 💔
❗️He’s bald with the surgical scars on his head later on, closer to the actual events of mgs1 in 2005… his powers waste his body away and make him emaciated and weak, it temporarily wanes when he’s around liquid and it sort of balances things out… im not sure if he even eats lmao.. I think he’s some kind of energy vampire he just exists off vibes… (listen if quiet can PHOTOSYNTHESIS WHY NOT) all the hate and vile energy he had tapped into rotted him and the love he gets from his bestie and his bf sustains him.. that’s how I imagine it…
I think mantis has seen how liquid dies like since they were kids he’s always known about the foxdie anyway even if he didn’t specifically know it was that, he saw he would just expire and drop dead one day while still young so maybe he just wanted to die anyway.. suicide mission… he develops brain cancer as a result of using his powers so immensely to extract the parasite from liquid as a kid, it’s a slow growing cancer and I see it as a storytelling device of self sacrifice… cutting his own life shorter to be with someone he loves that doesn’t have much time themself… i like to think out of all the fucked up involuntary medical torture he’s probably been through I think at least one thing was voluntary… he goes blind from a tumor on his optic nerve, he doesn’t off himself because he just wants to see liquid again and he knows he will, he had to stay alive for him…
❗️He really has no specific gender identity, like he’s a boy sure, but sometimes he’s a cute girl too, he was never treated like a child despite being his slave name quite literally and maybe some kind of cruel irony being third child. Third out of how many??? His father only instilled toxic masculinity upon him even as a young boy, and that’s not what he wanted to be…. That’s what he wants to be with….. and he will be… it’s the 90’s dude get over it, give piece of ur mind or penis 🙌
❗️He has no remorse for killing his father or the subsequent lives taken in the village as well, as far as he’s concerned they’re all complicit in the same type of abuse his father is guilty of, he doesn’t care for people’s lives and genuinely enjoys toying with them. I think he admits to what he did when his burns begin to heal and he wakes up in the hospital since he is the only survivor and the source of the fire is still unknown.. he recalls what little he can. He just wished his father would burn in the hell he and those people believe in. That he did! They all did. He probably demonstrates this power again by throwing things at doctors and nurses. He doesn’t want help, he wants to get away…
❗️Because of his admission he’s treated as a criminal despite being a child, however that is when he is fully dehumanized and his powers are seen as something viable and tactical, each of the barcode tattoos I imagine are just from being shipped around different labs as he killed the staff and doesn’t cooperate…
I don’t like to infantilize him… he’s been through horrible things but he chooses what he wants to do with the free will he gains, he kills people without remorse and doesn’t care about ethics or morals he’s just really attached to one guy he’s in love with… it’s ok when ocelot does it for bb isn’t it
