Right- I’m well aware this is overstepping the boundaries of a source blog but this is important and I need people to see this. I’m seeing a Skimmons Batwoman AU which I’m really hoping is out of ignorance because Batwoman is not something you can easily replicate like the Batboys or the Batgirls. I’m hoping this isn’t a trend like the Alex Danvers as Batwoman spectacle because it’s awful and you’d really hate Kate Kane if that were the case.
A note though: I haven’t refreshed myself on her origin story as of late. It’s very paraphrased and I would recommend reading Batwoman: Elegy, Batwoman in the New 52, and best of yet, Batwoman Rebirth. There’s a list here but it’s not updated as of late.
A brief introduction to Katherine Rebecca Kane, aka Kate Kane, aka Batwoman: She’s a jewish lesbian who has wanted to serve in the military her whole life. At twelve, her twin sister and mother were killed in a kidnapping incident, and the previously mentioned incident causes her to want to serve. She gets into one of the best military schools in the country under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. She’s at the top of her class. One day, she gets called to the dean’s office and she’s asked if she’s a lesbian. She refuses to deny it, and as a result of that is expelled. What happens afterwards is that she has a lost period- in essence, she’s aimless - that ends around the time she meets Batman. From that point on she fights as a street vigilante. Her dad helps by giving her a high tech suit.
Batwoman is her way to serve. Batwoman is part of her identity you can’t just place and play around with. Batwoman is unique to Kate Kane alone. You simply can’t play around with this concept like you could by turning Daisy into one of the Batgirls. There have been more than one Batgirls. There is only one Batwoman and that is Kate Kane.
If I were to summarize Kate in a few words, I would have to use the following: Jewish Lesbian Superhero. Her religion and her sexuality are vital to who she is as a person and that is the reason is why her moniker cannot be thrown around like spare rags.-@chochang
