Metering Research
light meters
Q1 What does a handheld light meter measure? How is this different from a camera light meter?
Evaluate the intensity of light and calculates for exposure. you can input the shutter speed and aperture settings to see if your estimated settings were correct.
Q2 Checking if your exposure is over, under or correctly exposed allows you to do what for your image?
Allows you to be sure your not loosing anything in the shadows or highlights within your image.
Q3 Why did Jeff Rojas set his shutter speed to 1/200th of a second and his iso to 100?
So he can freeze everything in the frame and eliminate any blur on the subject or subjects clothings.
Q4 By entering these settings into the light meter, what will the light meter calculate?
So light meter can focus on finding the right aperture.
Q5 Why should you hold your light meter against your subject?
To measure the light falling onto the subject.
Q6 If you wanted a moodier image, why should you move the light meter to record the brightest light?
Will disregard the shadows and will focus on the brightest side.
Camera Meters
Q1 What does an in-camera light meter measure?
Measures overall exposure of a scene.
Q2 What are the three metering modes that DSLR’s have? (you may wish to insert a diagram)
Evaluative, Centre Weighted and Spot
Q3 What camera mode should you set your camera to and why?
Manual because you have more control over the exposure and shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings.
Q4 On your camera’s light meter, what do the numbers represent?
Each number is one stop of light.
Q5 If there is too much light in a scene, what side of the scale will your camera meter be on? And what if there’s not enough light, which side?
+ side = too much light, - side = not enough light and the middle stop is what the camera thinks is the right exposure for the scene.
Q6 What does evaluative metering work well for?
Works well for scenes that are evenly lit.
Q7 What’s the difference between center weighted metering, compared to evaluative metering?
centre metering doesn't take into account where the focus point is, whereas evaluative metering does.
Q8 What does spot metering do/how does it work?
spot metering will give the most precise and accurate exposure control over your image. only evaluates the light around the point you choose and ignores the rest.
