SPACE-PLACE PITCH
Scarborough is a suburban division of eastern Toronto known for housing majority immigrants and minorities, but it is also where I spent most of my life. For anyone I think the place you grow up in can cause you to feel trapped, or it can hold important memories: which for me have formed into an attachment. For this project I wish to capture the bond I have with the area, expressed through photographs intended for a physical print.
The vision I have is for the first half of photos to be taken within my room, house, and neighborhood. Although this is mainly a personal project–starting with photographs closest to me in spirit and in physical space–an objective it holds is for the audience to feel a similar warmth that is currently being somewhat destroyed by gentrification. As we move outwards and more towards the city, there is an apparent influx of construction: old malls I used to go to being torn down and new transit lines being implemented. The feeling of disconnect from witnessing your “hometown” alter is something I hope people can relate to or experience after flipping through the pages of this book.
I’ve come to the realization that people either stereotype Scarborough to be dangerous, gang affiliated, maybe low income, or don’t have any perceptions besides it’s relation to Toronto as a whole. This is all very understandable, but also why it's the perfect inspiration for this project. These images will all be taken by myself during this upcoming week as I document what it’s like to commute around the suburb down to the city.
