Can somebody explain to little old me why he had to whistle?! I'm still confused.

I heard people mention the "canaries should stay above ground" but I don't get that connection. I mean that random guy in the car cannot get that reference to that one case?! I am so confused!

I think it’s because if you whistle something happy and cheerful, it will distract you from fear
