Talking usually will work if you’re trying to understand the child AND setting boundaries in place. Tell me why you are angry xyz, now you can’t push things over but you can punch a pillow. Give options and if those don’t work when you do punish lay out that you gave them options, give them a chance to take them but I’d they don’t then it is a time our or grounding or what have you.

My only source is being a teacher of 2 year Olds for a year but it usually works wonders

I’d give them space but let them know that you’re there for them. Honestly speaking when a child trusts you, even if they don’t want to speak in the moment, they will eventually come around to talk to you. Because they know you won’t judge or yell or make them feel bad. Usually. And if they’re like throwing a tantrum it’s one of those, okay I see you’re upset, we need to sit down so that we can calm down. I’ll sit with you. Do you need a hug etc.

I used to have a lil girl that threw massive tantrums and she couldn’t /wouldn’t talk in the moment and you’d have to get down on her level and ask, do you need a hug/squeeze a hand/etc. She’d answer yes and want you to squeeze her until she calmed down and was able to vocalize why she was mad.
