I just wrote it about my childhood, and I didn’t know how that would read on an album. But it’s been everybody’s favorite song. I didn’t tell my mom. It was a total secret. So I wrote it in secret and then decided to record it secretly, so she had no idea that the song was recorded. My producers sent me the track and I synched it up to all my baby videos and I played it for her one Christmas Eve, and she bawled her eyes out. She didn’t even think that it was my song. She didn’t think there was any way for me to record a song without her knowing.”

what she means: if marty and doc landed on october 21st, 2015, where were all the halloween decorations? was halloween still celebrated in their 2015 timeline? or did it become such an all-encompassing, ultra-hyped holiday that every day became halloween? is that why griff and his buddies had 80's era spandex and grungy leather jackets on? were they not concerned with era-accurate costuming? is that why doc was rocking part of what is clearly a rainy days christopher robin costume? did halloween become not so much a holiday, but a complete state of being? where were all the tiny pumpkins?

I feel no need to burn down the house I built by hand. I can make additions to it. I can redecorate. But I built this. And so I’m not going to sit there and say, “Oh, I wish I hadn’t had corkscrew-curly hair and worn cowboy boots and sundresses to awards shows when I was 17; I wish I hadn’t gone through that fairy-tale phase where I just wanted to wear princess dresses to awards shows every single time.” Because I made those choices. I did that. It was part of me growing up. It wasn’t some committee going, “You know what Taylor needs to be this year?” And so with 1989, I feel like we gave the entire metaphorical house I built a complete renovation and it made me love the house even more—but still keeping the foundation of what I’ve always been.
