Well, this entire episode was demonstrating that. From his attempts to connect with Ellie (remembering she liked the ravioli, wanting to play Boggle and teach her the guitar, asking to hear her puns) to telling her that, after 20 years of pain, *she* was the thing that healed him ("it wasn't time that did it") to choosing her over humanity without a second thought...at his heart Joel Miller really is just a Girl Dad put in an extreme situation.
