George and Junior: Succession in Structure
here's a neat little scene from henpecked hobos, the first george and junior cartoon
the structure in this cartoon is pretty simple: george and junior must eat the chicken
but tex avery always liked making his cartoons even more crazy as it went on
this cartoon starts off pretty normal but the gags and timing elevate it and keep adding more to "the favour"
you just gotta love that worm costume!
cute and crazed at the same time!
so we know what's going to happen george puts on the worm costume and junior is tasked with killing the chicken with the axe
this is what starts off the structure of the scene and this is part 1: the starting point
notice how this part starts off pretty relaxed but your gonna see what's gonna happen next
the backgrounds and colours in this cartoon are great as well using lots of greens, gerys, and slight yellows
it's sad that this hasn't been restored yet
Part 2
the chicken comes out to find george as the worm
this part sets the tone of the rest of the scene
it's starting to get wilder and further from reality as it goes on
NOW HERE'S WHERE THE REAL SPICE GETS GOING
the first gag of even more wilder gags to come
now we're moving on to the third part
by this point tex is preparing us for the instantly in this part
george now is in fear
the chicken's getting to him
this is where the suspense starts off
our hero tries to escape by way of the fence
But alas
he is captured
scott bardley is also contributing to the suspense as the music gets louder and more dramatic here giving a bigger impact here
Just look in the fear in his eyes!
his last resort is the scream of help for george's beloved friend...
"JUNIOR!!!!!"
will junior come to the rescue? find out soon......
and of course he does!
now the scene is a little less zany but is zany enough to keep the laughs afloat
but junior doesn't do much he's just too dumbfounded to even know what happened to george
this part is more relaxed but it doesn't last long as you're see soon
"ERM WHAT DO YOU THINK JUNIOR?"
with this part the insanity is back in action
with this discovery our hero attempts to shake george out of the chicken
The chicken in fear of her life does a little panicked dance before zipping away off screen
and out comes an egg fresh out of the ass!
the scene has now fully settled and it has now gone back into its resting place just like the best scenes in an tex avery mgm cartoon!
the egg's now a little startled what could possibly be in there?
why it's george
junior may have saved george's life but that ain't good enough in a tex avery cartoon!
by now you should be able to see how tex structures a scene
it's starts off relaxed getting the audience ready for what's to come
then he starts the gags where the scene starts to get zanier
by then the audience is prepared and tex gives it higher stakes and even more insane than before
and then it relaxes once
with a structure like that you can make your cartoon much more memorable
