Blog 12

At the beginning of the semester I wasn't all that excited at the idea of having to blog. I did not want to do it at all but I knew I had to. When we first started I had no clue what to write what I could really say and get away with, I wasn't quite sure what to do. But eventually it grew on me, made feel like my opinions actually mattered and it also helped my writing. Now looking back on my past blogs I noticed a few bit of changes in my writing. One change that I noticed was my level of comfortability in my writing. Before I was holding back in my writing, not putting forth all of my ideas. As my blogs progressed I realized I stopped holding back as much and just letting it go. As we continued I realized that this was where I can come to just write whatever and express how I felt about the topics at hand. Now I feel more comfortable to just say what I want and how I really feel.  In the beginning when I started blogging I kind of had the grasp of laying out where i wanted things in my writing to go. But as I started blogging I feel like I got a better grasp of that, especially since it had to be shorter than an actual paper.

I struggled with trying to appeal to certain audiences and as i continued writing I tried to work on this. But I feel like I can work more on this in the future. One strength that I have is that I have lots of ideas to write about and thoughts on what I am going to actually use and write down. But my downfall is organizing the stuff in my head and putting it down to make sense. I tend to get things all jumbled up and things in my writing start to get confusing.

I feel like I am going to continue to work on my vocabulary and organizing my thoughts. I think that I can expand my vocabulary a little better than what it is right now. I can also work on my grammar usage in my works too. In the future I will also continue working on organizing my thoughts a little better and make my writing flow. In general blogging helped me bring structure to my writing to try and get right to the point with what I have to say. I also learned how to try and appeal to a certain audience but I still have to get a better hang of that.

Extra Credit

For my topic of choice I want to talk about the importance of traveling in a group whether walking or going away. Ever since we were kids our parents always told us don't talk to strangers and to never walk anywhere alone. As a kid you write things off as just another thing your parent is telling and nagging you about. But as I grow older I realize the importance of what they were saying. Back home on my block where I live there are kids all around playing and laughing including my younger siblings. Kids have been going missing and being kidnapped in the area and I pray everyday that nothing happens to them. Traveling in groups can minimize your chances of being snatched or a target for violence. I walk everywhere with a friend or multiple friends especially if it's late. If a circumstance comes up where you cannot walk with anyone I recommend calling a friend on the phone and staying with you until you reach your destination. I usually call my mother or my best friend when having to walk by myself. That way if something happens to me someone would know and call for help.

Traveling in a group in other cases can mean a lot besides safely walking to your destination. For example, carpooling, taking a vacation, and it also just makes you feel less lonely. Car pooling can help save gas and be a fun experience. When taking a vacation as a group you can get great deals on lots of things, you would have lots of company instead of being lonely and it can make for fun memories.  

My friends and I have recently developed a system for when we all travel together. If we are walking there is one person in charge of having their cell phone fully charged in case of emergency. They are in charge of GPS or if we may need to call for help such as a cab or 911. If we are traveling back home together we still have a designated cell phone person, also someone who carries the snacks and one person in charge of making sure everyone has their stuff needed to travel. We try to travel together to keep safe and it's better than going by yourself but sometimes we have to go separate ways. It's also better to get lost in a group than by yourself  it's also less risk of danger. Traveling in a group while walking can help save lots of lives and can ensure the safety of many people.

New Music

The song that I chose to do my blog on is Wise Man by Frank Ocean from the movie Southpaw. The song is apart of the R&B music group and the sound is more sad which makes you want to actually listen to the words. This is a good song because not only was it in a really good movie but because the lyrics are empowering. He is talking about a man who needs to overcome the challenges in his life however he does not want to show his weakness to the world. But in the end is triumphant in his effort. It exactly explains what the character in the movie it is from is going through on his life. The character lost his wife and he went through a downward spiral in his life. He lost sight of what was important and someone snapped him back to reality and he tried to overcome every rock thrown in his path. 

My favorite part of the song is when he says, “ I bet your mother would be proud of you.” and that means a lot to me. My mom and my dad are the reason I am the strong person I am today. They tell me never to be scared to go and out and try even if you will fail. That there will be roadblocks in your life and you will have to overcome them in order to be successful. You will have to go through the fire and mud in order to get to where you need to be. I feel like this song can help someone get through something they may be going through right now. Everyone may know of Frank Ocean but I feel like this song is new because not a lot of people may have watched the movie or really listened to the song’s lyrics. I want to introduce this song that people will now maybe be interested in watching the movie or just listening to the song. I recently watched the movie and had the urge to look up the song because it made me cry. I decided that this topic would be a good way of sharing it. Frank Ocean always has powerful messages behind his songs and this one speaks to me more the others. I rarely listen to songs that I think will make me cry but this song is on my list now and so is the movie it came from.

Blog 10

For my topic involving domestic violence around female children I chose to use personal stories from actual victims of domestic violence and who grew up around it. I wanted to show the actual effects that the violence has on people. Everyone and their situation is different and will vary in ways but in certain ways they can be similar. Victims usually develop long and short term problems being exposed to violence whether being an adult or a child. Social Services now acknowledge kids who have been exposed to adult violence as victims as well. Children develop warning signs that show when something is wrong so regardless of their silence you can tell. Most victims may not be comfortable talking about their traumatic experiences to other people and that is also a result in why most cases aren’t reported.

I felt like asking for interviews or trying to talk to victims would have been way to emotional for them so I resorted to the world wide web. We all know about how on the internet or behind a screen and keyboard people can be anyone they want. For victims this is a safe haven for them to share their stories and experiences with fellow victims or the world. For my topic I found a website where women who were in domestic violence relationships and people who grew up around it come and share their stories. I found many websites exactly like this and was amazed at how many brave survivors came forth and shared their stories with the world. I will use these women’s stories to show the issues that develop within the victims and those exposed. I will also be using stats about domestic violence that will shock some people and open eyes for others. They will show how very common this type of situation is, how common it is that children grow up around such evil and grow up with reminders.

My topic also includes the resources available for the victims of domestic violence. Woman tend to not utilize the resources given around them and studies shown by scholars prove this. The studies show percentages of how many go and how many don't but I chose to go a different way. I chose to look up what those resources are and what they can be used for in regards to helping victims. I hope to learn from this how in the future I can maybe help save someone’s life or inform others on this topic. By doing my research I hope to gain more knowledge of this topic and use this in life.

Scholarly Gap

On Wednesday we discussed scholarly gaps in research and ways that people fill them. My topic is project 2 was Domestic abuse around young female children how it affects them when they get older and what resources are given in the United States.

The information that we wouldn't know for my topic is how it affects the young women, and the actual resources given and how effective it really is. I plan on researching actual first hand accounts of people in these situations. I may run into a problem with finding some stories because lots of people do not wish to speak up or come forward. With this information I want to show how common domestic violence and the statistics for the US alone.  I want to find maybe some stories or blogs of women who experience first hand accounts of abuse and what happened to them. I want to see how the women’s experiences were different and how they are the same. I want to see the short term and long term effects of this abuse and whether or not it got to the point of them needing outside help. Children have life longing impacts that can gain a control on their young lives, forever. Nowadays lots of people try to document these types of things and I want to show that in my research.

Not only just women but anybody going through or exposed to domestic violence carry lifelong scars. Some of these scars and demons get so bad that they cannot bear them on their own. They go for outside help offered by the government which can be located anywhere around you just have to look. In the United States there are numerous hotlines, centers and clinics that they can go to. Depending on the severity of the cases that are actually reported the government may intervene whether by force or willingly. For example,Social Services if finding the home unfit and proof of violence they can take the child away and many hotlines are offered in many forms such as calling or even chatting online. I want to also show how effective these resources are and also I want to show how many people actually reach out to get help. My research is significant because people wouldn’t actually know what i am trying to get at. They would not know the effects that these women carry around for their lifetime, what they actually go through to at least feel better again or at least some bit of “normal” again.

Let’s Talk.

In class we try to talk about a lot of things, so far all of the topics we have discussed to me have been important. One topic that we should discuss that I feel very strongly about is pollution and preserving the planet. We talk about this briefly when it comes up but we never go too much in depth on the issue. Our planet is slowly deteriorating right in front of our eyes and we are the main cause of it. Pollution affects everything around us, birth defects in babies, IQ points dropping and even the lowering of life expectancy.

 The major types of pollution are land, air, water, light and noise. Even though some of these things don't affect us humans directly they do affect the environment. In some places damage is way to irreversible, for example, China’s air is so bad that sometimes they cannot even go outside. It is said that pollution in China can even change weather patterns in the United States in which can stop clouds from producing rain and snow. All it takes is a jet stream five days to carry the heavy air pollution our way. We should talk of ways to help preserve what we have left and ways to prevent it. If we don't preserve what we have now what will be left as time goes on?

 The world changes around us everyday now imagine if we continue neglecting the issue of pollution what it will be like.  There are many ways everyone can do their part and help out. We may not feel like it or think oh we don't need to but in reality we really do. Ever since we were kids they told us about the risks of what could happen if we don't help out and do our part. Now that I actually opened my eyes to what is going around us it scares me to think of what will the future hold for this planet. Looking at the earth now and in years to come we need to look and question whether or not it will get better or worse. If we continue to neglect the pollution going on around us we may end up just like China or maybe even worse. The future is in our hands and we seem to not really see it, we can control what happens. But the real issue is what happens if we wait too long to change? What if?

As the years went by we experienced different political parties; democrats and republicans who ran for presidency. Such as Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and John McCain. Throughout all of those presidential campaigns they all had an important issue that the new presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump face, which is Health Care and Abortion. 

As seen in some debates, when the topic of making abortion legal was brought up Democratic Party Hillary Clinton stated she agrees because she believes that we must protect access to safe and legal abortion. On the other hand Republican Party Donald Trump disagrees. He states that there should be some form of punishment that women must go through if she has gotten an abortion. Also another example would be Obamacare, Clinton stated that health insurance should be affordable and accessible in every state across the country. Trump disagrees. He thinks that it's going to have a huge negative effect for the country. He also stated that even when Obamacare is affordable people still wouldn't have insurance. 

We need to realize who we really have to choose to become our leader for the next 4 years. Loyalty is a strong feeling of support or allegiance towards someone. Do you think Donald Trump has that characteristic? Or Hillary Clinton? I would go towards Hillary because she shows more interest at heart for the people of this country. She to me has the better chance to become a good leader for the United States, yes she may have her faults but overall she fought for the promise of quality for Americans for the past decade. While we have a man who thinks punishment for abortion is okay, that’s absurd. Because a woman decided to make a choice on whether she was ready for a child or not she has to be punished? Absolutely not. I believe what a woman chooses to do with her body is her choice and as far as health care I think everyone should have access to it. You don't expect to get sick it just happens and when it happens you will need help getting better but some people do not have the proper access. When choosing between these candidates think of the one you can put your full confidence in and that's where trust plays a major role. Choose the candidate that you would think will have the country’s best interest in mind.

My first day

It was a dark, cold, rainy day also known as my first day moving into college. It started early in the morning, my mom woke me up early so we can go downstairs and have breakfast at this time we were staying at a hotel near to the school. I eventually got up to go downstairs but I couldn’t eat at all, my emotions were just all over the place that day. I felt sad my mom was leaving but at the same time I didn’t want her to stay, I was just nervous to be in a new environment so far from home, the only settling feeling thing was that I was going to be with my friends from back home. When we finally got to buffalo state college it was chaotic everyone was trying to find where to go, traffic was crazy and everyone is trying to get there stuff to their rooms. After getting my keys for my room I started to try and get settled. I was the only one in the room at that point because one of my roommates went back to the city since she was over here since the summer and she wanted to go home and see her family and my other roommate wasn’t here yet. I thought that worked out in my favor because I could scatter my stuff all over and then organize it. As I was unpacking my stuff trying to figure out where I will put everything I hear my friend Dominique  voice coming down the hall as I Iook out my door she is putting her key in the door right across from me. She was with my other friend Shanica and Veronique and that time we were just so excited because we knew we were going to be in the same hall but not across from each other, as we are just screaming and hugging each other the parents are just watching us carrying on. Then they got go to work and trying to unpack their stuff and I got to work doing the same as my mom just sat on the bed and watched me do all the work. After we got to a decent amount of unpacking my friends decided we should go and our id cards. Us not knowing where we began to ask questions till we found it on our way back we got lost and ended up on the other side of your hall it was pretty funny and we laugh about it to this day. As the hours started to go on it was time for our parent to go. I was actually pretty sad to see my mom go and tried very hard not to cry because I knew if she saw my tears she might cry and  didn’t want strangers to see me crying. After everyone parents left we went to grab something to eat and we went to explore campus some more.

I am super jealous of your move in day experience. I too was so very nervous that I couldn’t eat and I think the fact that I was being sent to school by myself also made me more nervous. I had to take a bus to get here for freshman year, so I was very upset that my mom wasn’t able to come see the school. I only knew two people from my high school that were coming here and one of them is like my brother. It was weird because they were there already here for football camp so they made friends by the time I came and most of the time I was by myself. I mostly stayed to myself because my roommates already had friends so it was difficult adjusting for me especially since i’m shy. But then in the future I met my track team and made lots of friends and became best friends with one roommate. That day I spent most of my time in my room because I didn’t have any friends but then realized that in order to make some I needed to go out and make some. So I went out and tried to step outside of my comfort zone.

i LUHHHH my mama.

For most of my life, I’ve been a problem child, I’ll admit when I was younger I was bullied and that turned me into the bitch I am today lol. I always got bullied because I had kinky hair and I was Haitian. I always wondered why me until one day I got the courage to face my bully, to be honest it was my mother. My mother has always been my rock, don’t get me wrong I’ve had my “I hate my mother “times, but looking back on it I wouldn’t trade my mother for the world.  My mother had me at a tender age of just seventeen, when my mother was pregnant she was kicked out of her home and became homeless. Every one told my mom to get an abortion but she refused, she tells me today that she something in her body told her “don’t do it”. My mother slept on trains just up until her delivery. She was then admitted into a shelter. My dad was in jail when I was born and I didn’t mean him until around six years old. All in the meantime it was just my mother and I, she still managed to get her Bachelor’s in Art and Science. My mother is now a social worker, working on her Master’s.

I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my mother, not only physically but also mentally. Where I come from if you don’t have good parents, you aren’t going anywhere. I commend my mother, being that she was a child herself, who didn’t know what she was doing and raised me to be the strong woman I am now took A LOT of strength and courage. I love my mother for never giving up on me, when I was 16 or so I just started acting so dumb. I started fighting and I used to like to fight just for the fun of it, I started cutting school, I basically didn’t care. Everyone else around me gave up on me, family members shunned me, and started telling me I would end up just like my mother seventeen and pregnant. My mother has always seen the best in me and has always tried with me and for that everything I do now is for her. I won’t be satisfied with life until my mother won’t have to work, and she can depend on me. After all, I put her through a lot of shit.

I absolutely LOVE this ! Your mother is a very strong woman. My mom is like my best friend, my rock my everything. Being an athlete there where times were I felt low down like there was nothing else left to give she was always there to pick me up. Even in everyday life she pushes me to be the best I can be, she’s my role model. She never gave up and never wavered through losing her job, losing our house and trying her best to keep food on the table. When she falls I will always be there to pick her up and just like you said I won’t be satisfied with life until my mom wont have to lift a finger.

Blog 1

The day was January 21st, 2016. I had just reached Buffalo State the day before, for the freshmen move in day. It was about 12:30 pm and i was almost done with orientation for the day. As I was on the line to get food, the longest I’ve ever seen inside the dining hall so far, I had a strange feeling in my stomach. I didn’t know if it was from me being nervous or i was just simply hungry. I paid it no mind and just figured it was hunger because I hadn’t eaten yet. After I got my food, I looked for an empty seat and sat down. As I was scrolling through my news feed on Facebook, I immediately stopped and dropped my phone. There it was, my friend from middle school’s name and the words “Rest In Peace.” I didn’t want to believe it, but it was true. I had completely lost my appetite. Unfortunately she died battling cancer for about 3 years. I felt even worse because I didn’t get to visit her before I left for school, I had no spare time between work and packing. She was a very outgoing and funny person. There are only a few people that I still keep in contact with from middle school, we were all devastated by this loss.

This was a wake up call to me. Life is very important and how you live can affect the lives of many others. My friend’s support system was strong. This came from many relationships and friendships she built with people over time. Growing up, I was a quiet person, and tended to stay to myself. I’m not anti-social and hate other people but I just preferred to be alone. I am somewhat still like this but I reach out to people more than I used to. It’s amazing how she lives on through many people now. Although she passed away, she isn’t suffering anymore. But from there on out, I made a promise to myself that I would change. She brought many people together and it showed me that no matter what the situation is, if people genuinely care for you it will show. She left a good mark on earth. I want to make sure i leave good impressions on everybody too. It gave me a warm feeling seeing all the love she received. It wasn’t forced because of the situation but everyone actually cared about her because of the type of person she was.

I want to start out by saying I am so sorry for your loss. I totally agree with you, it doesn’t matter how long you lived but how great of a life it was. I lost both my grandmother and great aunt they were like my two best friends. It hurt more because I was young but I also didn’t know fully understand what was going on. My family members explained to me exactly what you are saying in your post, that they lived great and full lives but that it was just their time to go. We only have one life to live and it’s up to us what you do with it.

How I Overcame High School Depression & Bullying.

As you can see from the title this is going to be an emotional story from my heart, and everything about it is one hundred percent true. I’ve never told anyone about this before because it’s so hard for me to get it out my mouth, but I guess now is the right time to share my story with you guys.

Upon moving to New York with my family and starting middle school was tough, because everything was new and I wasn’t adjusting to the system. I was bullied because I was considered the “new kid”. They would take advantage of me because I wasn’t one of them, because I wasn’t wearing their branded name clothing, the way how I looked, the way how I talked, the way how I walked, they would even call me names that I never even knew existed.

All I could’ve done is to just look at them, and let them say and do their thing. I had no one to help me because everyone was on their side. It came down to the point where they would hit me some days because they were in some of my classes. I thought that this would be the end of me, because I fear what could happen next. It wasn’t an easy road, but I took the right step in reporting them, and show them that I still had faith and power in me to do the right thing. I found people that went through the same thing I did, and we did what was right because we believe in justice. It didn’t took long enough for depression to slip in, because I still felt like half of me was gone and the other half just give up.

After graduating middle school it was time to start a new chapter which was high school. I had no clue what I was getting into. Once I put my foot into the building, I had to put a brave face on and pretend like I’m ready for what’s behind the door. After completing a few weeks I was depressed because of what the outcome was. I was struggling, my grades were horrible, and it was hard for me to make friends. Then one day it even got worst when my guidance counselor told me that I got testing anxiety. That just made me think what’s the point of me living, what’s the point of me being here, and doing all this when I know that one way or the other it’s going to come out as a failure. I was depressed every day. I would cry myself to sleep because I had to clue what to do, or who to tell what was going on at that moment.

After weeks and months of crying I saw a light at the end of the room. Something was telling me to follow that light and listen to what it had to say to you. My life was starting to gradually change as I got further into high school. I sat down and looked at myself into the mirror, and said to myself that what are we doing? Why are we like this? That’s when I realized that we can’t be like this forever. It’s not going to get us anywhere in life. Having testing anxiety was tough; no matter how hard I work it would come out as something else. I had to fight it, I had to show that hard work does pay off, and it does! I was able to show people that I did it. I was able to prove to myself that this is not the end, this is the beginning of something new. I graduated high school with honors and now I’m a second year college student.

My point in telling you my story is, because I want you to know if you are going through the same thing I did, I want you to know that there’s hope. There is an end to it, and it’s up to you to make sure that happen. You’re going to hit a lot of bumps down the road, but you got to fight it and prove to yourself that you are worth it, that you got what it takes, that you can follow your heart, and become whatever you want to become. Dreams do come through, but they don’t come through if you don’t work for it. I’m still struggling with the fact that I have testing anxiety but I’m still living my life every day with the faith and hope in me that one day, I will be able to fulfill my dreams.  For me to overcome this in my life was hard; I had to pretend every day that nothing was wrong, that everything was fine, but it was not. It took confidence, bravery, and courage to step out of depression, and overcome bullying. I hope you can see the light at the end of the room like I did.

I really love this post and you are a very strong person. I too have had run ins with bullying when I was younger in middle school and the beginning of high school. I was always bothered because I didn’t have the latest clothing or sneakers or my hair wasn’t looking the best. My mom had recently lost her job and money was very tight especially after my grandmother died and grandfather moved. At first all I could was be sad, cry and shy away thinking that if they didn’t see me they couldn’t bother me. But just like you said you have to have hope that there will be light at the end of that tunnel. This is a very big problem in society nowadays and it’s sad. That experience made me become stronger as a person and I think I can say that for most that experienced this. I thank you for telling us your story you are very brave.

Change.

Adjusting to something new was never really my favorite thing to do. I’m not that big of a fan of change and sometimes that can be someone’s biggest downfall. Throughout my life I had to make huge adjustments and during each time I notice growth in myself which makes me very happy. When I was eight years old my grandmother passed away, she was my best friend. The months following her death were the hardest, trying to really grasp the fact that I would not see her again was really the hardest part. It took time though as I grew older in age it started getting a bit easier but don't get me wrong it still hurts. It was hard on my grandfather as well but that was until he found love again.

 When I was in about 10th grade he got remarried and I was asked to be in the wedding. At first I didn't want to do it, I couldn't even believe that it was actually happening. I was told that I was being selfish, that my grandfather is allowed to be happy and that no matter how we feel about the situation that we were and always will be there for him. I soon realized that they were right he should be happy and if he can make that adjustment then I can too. They are still happily married but then after the marriage another big boulder hit me. My grandfather who I lived with since the day I was born is moving out to go to South Carolina. My heart was so heavy I didn't want him to leave I would miss him to much and I still do. Although I didn't have a choice in the matter I am glad that he did move, I've never seen my grandfather so happy. After seeing how happy he was and how good things were going I decided maybe change isn't so bad. 

During spring semester last year my mom called me one day when I was in practice and asked one question that little did I know would change things for me big time. She said “How would you like it if I moved to Georgia?” and even still to this day my response to her still shocks me. I told her that whatever makes her happy and whatever she decides to do that i'm behind her 100%. Well my mom did actually move to Georgia and so far that has been the biggest adjustment for me besides my freshman year of college. 

I had to go to a whole new state that meant learning new places and where I was, making new friends new faces and adapting to new weather. I spent my whole summer making new friends from the people at my summer job to my new friends in the neighborhood, learning whether I was on one street or another or even what county I was in. It still is a big challenge to me being so far away from my other family, friends and well my home. My younger siblings had to adjust to being in a different school system as well as the same challenges I faced. But then I had a dejavu moment one day, I just sat back and watched my family and it made me smile. I realized that my family has never been happier just like my grandfather, my mom used to be so sad worrying about everything rarely cracking a smile. Now she's all smiles along with all of my siblings my shy ones even cracked out of their little shell. I even cracked out of my shell being in Georgia this summer opened me up to new things that opened up new doors for me. 

Change is not as bad as everyone may think it is but don't get me wrong it can be hard. Adapting to the changes in your surroundings is a key to survival for animals but as well as humans too. ”Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it.”.

Multimodal Composing

Multimodal composing is the act of using multiple ways of conveying information to your specified audience. This can be done by using pictures, gestures, audio, videos anything needed to get your message or information across. When analyzing or composing multimodal texts you want to break down the information piece by piece. To do this you want think about the genre, features, meaning, and purpose and audience. Genre is what kind of text it is, features is what styles or things did the author do to put emphasis or inspire feeling in their work, purpose and audience is what reason was the text created and who the intended reader, viewer or listener is and meaning is what your interpretation of the text is. Project number one is centered on multimodal composing and analyzing, I am using pictures for my project and that fits under the categories of multimodal composition.

Working on my project I tried my best to chose pictures that have significant meaning not only individually but as a whole. I also tried to chose pictures that my audience can try and connect with more but if I use ones they aren’t familiar with then I could open them to new scenes. My topic for my project is hard work and determination. The pictures that I am considering using for my project are around the Houston Gymnasium, Coyer Field and the Sports Arena many places everyone on campus may be familiar with. One picture I will be using is a picture of the outside of the side of the sports arena of pictures of athletes on the windows. This picture represents a desired goal by some athletes including me and in my opinion the one way to get there is to work your butt off. That one day all that hard work will pay off and maybe you too can one day be on one of those windows or on a wall some day. Another picture I wish to use will be of our labs and classrooms in the gym to show that hard work doesn’t end when we leave the field, track, court or rink. Your academics is your number one priority here at Buffalo State College for a student athlete, hard work and dedication isn’t just on the field it starts there in the classroom. My other pictures will be of the many people who worked hard to get what they got and get to where they were and are. That there is only one way to succeed at anything you do and that is to give everything you have.

Food Allergies Suck.

So when I was little in the craziest way I found out that I was allergic to walnuts and pecans. My grandmother used to cook for us every Sunday, like you know Sunday family dinner. Now I love food with an undying passion but my favorite thing has to be dessert. My favorite dish my grandmother used to make is this Ambrosia that had pecans in it. I used to love it so much but one day that all changed. One Sunday dinner everything was all fine and dandy we brought out the ambrosia and started to eat. The first few bites were heavenly but then I started to feel funny. My tongue started to get all tingly and my throat all scratchy and then all too quickly I couldn’t breathe. Now as everyone sat around the table laughing, talking and enjoying their food no one noticed that I was literally dying at the end of the table! Like literally life flashing before your eyes type dying until thankfully my little brother (who at the time wasn’t my favorite person in the world because I really liked being the only child) said something. Apparently he was pointing and laughing because he thought I was joking and I was mad at first but then realized he sorta saved my life so I let that slide. Doctors then explained that I cannot eat that ever again or anything containing pecans or walnuts ever again. From then on I have to carry around an EpiPen everywhere I go and I will never forget that day ever.

Now even til this day in my life I still have to remind some of my family what I am allergic to. They always forget though you know that middle child syndrome we get ignored a lot. Anyways so my freshman year my roommate became my best friend and ever since then we were inseparable even til this day. Sadly so far she and my other friend are the only people that I told once about my allergy and they remembered. Well one day I went into Residential Dining and the new and improved changes are wonderful. My favorite new addition is the ice cream bar in the corner. Now the ice cream place they had in retail was my FAVORITE place in there. I was heartbroken when they took it out but you know they added it into dining so I was okay with the change not like I have a choice. I went to get ice cream at the little bar and the choices they had on the sign were totally different than what was actually there and I nearly had a brush with death once again.They claimed that they had coffee ice cream but it turns out that it was actually butter pecan and the worst part is I couldn't even get another flavored ice cream. I couldn't risk the cross contamination factor given that it was only one scooper, I really wanted ice cream too but I had to settle for cookies. Long story short food allergies suck especially when lots of your favorite desserts contain the stuff you are allergic to.
