Early life
I am from Jewish home, I had a family that forced my intuition and cleverness to develop at a young age. I lived in Vienna and London, married Martha Bernays. I was always a great student, and studying the human's brain and its phisiology was my way of giving back. I spoke eight languages and was mostly influenced by Shakespeare.
During my university years I became a philosopher, psychologist, and zoologist.
Ideology
The subconscious mind is a layer of how you think. It contains all your fears, memories, wishes, and sexual fantasies. This is a troubled layer, it works in secret and the only way it reaches the surface is by talking. Speech travels all the way from top to buttom, it takes the lid of your subconscious mind without it knowing it was opened.
Your dreams also start here. They are a reflection of what happens in this hidden part of you. When you talk of your dreams your subconscious is being explored. Sometimes it protects you and hides certain things of you from you, its the way our traumas are overthrown.
My work and books
I did some studies on hysteria; I found that with genuine sexual pleassure a woman would be able to relax and therefore their hysteria would be gone.
I analyzed my patients' dreams. They would confess to me their dreams and I would interpret them with their personalities and memories. Dreams are the unconscious world we desire or fear the most. Our unconscious minds reveal our darkest or more profound wishes in a place where we cannot control ourselves.
Progress in my work
At first I used hypnosis, I thought the results were efficient and accurate. Later analysis and studies proved me wrong, one of the reasons I stopped the procedure, also I realized I was not the best hypnotizing people. I moved to free association. My patient would lay down look to a wall and I would sit behind them and let them say and express whatever came to their minds. With their ideas and day dream thoughts, I would be able to see if they struggled, focused on only one idea, or how their train of thought worked.
This became a popular and stereotypical form of psychoanalysis.
Controversy
During the years I worked and tested my theories of the human mind I found cocaine like a gate to the unconscios mind. I used it with my patients and with myself because it allowed a certain clarity that led to helpful conclusions.
The use of the powerful drug became questionable when I became addicted to it. The thrill it gave helped me see what I could not see with my sober eyes and mind, the problem was that it also my judgement unreliable and therefore all my procedure and ideas would be doubted. Cocaine helped for a while, but I had to end the abuse of it.
