Today was a pretty historic day, in more ways than one. 

History was made today! The Senate Appropriations Committee approved a 60% increase – approximately $350 million – for Alzheimer’s research. If passed into law, this will be the largest increase to date.  http://alz.org/documents_custom/senate_full_comm_final.pdf

I am so proud of all of my friends who worked extremely hard to advocate to congress. Alzheimer’s is a tragic disease to watch unfold, so it’s about time there was more funding for research.

Was there ever a time when you questioned whether or not you should become a physician/go to medical school? If so, what kept you going?

I imagine so…But to be honest, I was pretty focused on becoming a doctor the questioning didn’t last long.

 I think the closest I came to abandoning medicine was in my second year teaching high school. I loved the classroom, I had the most brilliant group of students that were fun and teachable. I could see myself as a secondary administrator. However, I still applied to medical school, and thankfully I did so… I loathed teaching my 3rd year. It just wasn’t as fun and my students were not as teachable. I was happy to leave when my acceptance came, there was not a doubt in my mind about medicine. 

I always wanted to see patients – I guess that’s what kept me going. I received the best advice in undergrad from a mentor: “If you want to see patients become an MD or DO, If not, become a PhD.” This was when I loved research a little too much for a bit, and this advice became a litmus test as I thought about different careers. This applied to teaching too. I wanted to continue to teach, but I wanted to see patients. So I jumped ship and headed to medical school. Now I get to see patients and teach everyday! It’s the best of all the worlds.

the longest vacation

I apologize for the relative lack of content recently. I have been on a semi-constant vacation since April-ish? No February. I breathing in the last of this wonderful vacation time this week. Residency starts June 15. 

I have about 70 drafts from med school that I plan on posting eventually, but for now, if you have any questions … Ask away!

mehhhh i’ve never liked that this was a secondary blog... I def thought about it, plus I believe in new beginnings.

I thought about a new name for a long time, and since hellodoctor was taken :-( , I had to move on to a new name. I find it slightly hilarious when I over hear other physicians say, “JUST PAGE MEDICINE.” It happens a lot, and was definitely magnified on my EM rotation. With that being said, my new blog, which is really just my old mirror blog will now be called Paging Medicine. PLEASE join me over there... I will continue to have the insightful, helpful medicine posts, but these will be about my journey as an Internal Medicine intern --> resident --> attending.

Had a magical omg THREE DAYS OFF. Laundry done, groceries purchased, house clean (ish), friends and family visited…now to go try and be impressive for a few more weeks and rock this gawddamned IM shelf before I collapse, exhausted, at the entrance to the alleged wonderland of work-life balance that is MS4. 

Please do not tell me that I’m wrong about MS4. I need to believe. 

And do not remind me about Step 2, kthx.

Anywayz. I am all done with all the things. I am just sitting in my room waiting for graduation. Oh I did move the other day, so thats a plus. My roommate doesn’t come back to Phx for a while, so it’s pretty quiet. 

I was going to adopt a kitten today, but yesterday the foster mommy emailed me and said the litter had to be put down b/c FeIV. :-( Really bummed out from that, but today I found a kitten!! So everything will work out! It’s a brand new baby kitty so I will have to wait for it to grow up a bit. But I’ll take suggestions for kitten names?

And we have to score at least a 475 on it in order to take boards. I did well enough. My score wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but it was sufficient so I at least don’t have to waste money on a different COMSAE.

Our school does the same, I think it’s a 450? to pass, but to be honest I’m not sure. I remember taking the COMSAE C about a week into my dedicated study time. I didn’t really take it seriously, because c’mon I was a week into studying and had 4 more to go. I ended up getting a 488 on the comsae, 4 weeks later I scored over 100 points higher on the COMLEX. Don’t fret, take a mental break, and go back to studying!! YOU CAN DO IT!
