Cousins once removed explanation
Welp, here I am with another blog explaining things. This time, I’ll be analyzing episode 88 “cousins once removed”, more specifically, Jeremie’s behavior. Because this is one of those eps people like to use for their Jeremie bashing agenda and even if I agree that he acted pretty nasty with his cousin, there’s more behind it than people seem to think.
It starts when we see Jeremie on his room, working on the Skid, he already looks a bit stressed here from the work, and then Odd calls him, making Jeremie more pissed off since he had already told him he was busy working in a really important thing and that he wanted him to stop calling.
But Jeremie’s anger doesn’t stop here, since just after that the principal came to his room, introducing him to his new roommate: his cousin Patrick! The problem is that Jeremie doesn’t seem to like him that much, in fact, he strongly dislikes him for some reason we don’t know yet. It even gets worse when the rest of the gang appears and seem to like Patrick, they even invite him to play with them!
Then, Aelita comes back and tries to talk to Jeremie, wondering why he acted the way he did with Patrick. Here we get to know a bit more about Jeremie’s story with his cousin, since he tells her that Patrick had “stole” his friends when they were on a camp. Aelita then storms off telling him he’s acting like a 3 years old kid and leaves. I’ll like to stop here because it’s what we gotta analyse to understand Jeremie’s behavior.
First of all, we know that Jeremie isn’t precisely a self-confident and sociable kid, so the fact that he had managed to make friends on a camp must had already been a big achievement for him, and then his cousin (a person he probably trusted) comes and charms his friends, leaving him completely out of game (Patrick didn’t do it purposely, but Jeremie thought he did). It’s normal that a thing like that upsets him, he just felt insecure because he was afraid it would happen again with his new group of friends. He may had gained more self-esteem by season 4, but he still felt inferior to Patrick. And if we add to that the fact that he was already pissed off because of the work and his argument with Aelita, then of course he came out aggressively towards his cousin.
But the episode didn’t end here, because after all of that, Sissi and Herb, who were on Jeremie’s room with Patrick after he (Jeremie) had left, got possessed. Patrick tried to fight them and helped Jeremie. At the end, a return to the past was made, and Jeremie apologized to Patrick because he had realized that he was a good guy, and not just a friend thief pretending to be a cool and charming guy, like he thought. This is one of the things I love about Jeremie, he always realizes his mistakes and tries to fix them up, learning from them and growing up as a character.
So no, he’s not a “rude jerk”, he’s just a good boy who fears loneliness and makes mistakes, like we all do.
