On October 6th, South Philadelphia High School held their 2nd Annual Commitment Ceremony for the 9th grade class. Families, Community Members, Partners, and Staff cheered them one as they received their pledges to graduate. Ninth Grade counselor, Emily Goodman encouraged students to look out into the crowd. "These are the faces of the village that will get you to 2020" Prior to the event, students wrote their own personal commitments that highlighted the importance of being accountable to themselves and their communities. These pledges will decorate the hallways of the school as reminder of the commitments they have made.

In February, Meade School hosted their “Let’s Read Math!” night in partnership with the Women’s Christian Alliance. The night was well attended by parents and students. The program not only informed parents on what their children were learning in the classroom, but also modeled ways to make learning fun and interactive at home through stories, games, and play.

Willard Elementary – Revival from the Roots

The series follows myriad Philadelphia School District students, parents and caregivers, staff, and teachers, along with Helen Gym, Co-Founder of Parents United for Public Education, and Jerry Jordan, President of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, as they tour Philadelphia’s Neighborhood Schools. This segment – Revival From The Roots: Willard Elementary features Willard Elementary, an elementary school located in the Kensington section of Philadelphia.

Willard serves a diverse and struggling population of families in one of Philadelphia’s poorest communities. The school provides many services to families and community members outside the school’s walls – offers many features of a “community school”, or a school that provides an expanded curriculum, wraparound supports for entire families, and deep involvement with the community.
