“Joan bursts through the doors on the second floor into the mall space and stumbles into a wall. Gathering herself she continues running into the main mall area...” As I started getting used to the movement of animating running for my character I started enjoying the process, playing with perspective and transitions into a different background. This was the last scene I was working on got my 2 min film before the quarantine period and I was unable to work on any more animation after. Got this scene I was quite happy with how it turned out as I used both reference videos I found online and also recorded a video myself of someone running in a hallway.

“She bursts through the doors into the stairway on the 3rd floor, hops two steps down and jumps the remaining flight of stairs, turning down to go down the second flight of stairs, she hears the shadowy figure getting close.” This is animation test of one of my scenes of my 2 mins film, the beginning of the chase scene. I used different references I could get online to get the right movements of running down the stairs, and I also improvised on the movements, acting it out how I wanted it to be, this was the initial test and I would have gone over it in more detail if I had time and the equipment to work on it more over the quarantine period.

The production of my Second Year film has been quite a challenge from the start, trying to develop the idea that I had into a visual film. I was confident that the idea was a strong one but one part I struggled with was retelling it in a way others would understand. After the pandemic and the university had to shut down, i was at even more of a disadvantage because I was unable to do much work at home due to lack of equipment. The only time i could really include more work to my project was when I borrowed equipments from friends which also wasn’t easy to do because of the situation of lockdown and minimal contact with others. Before the pandemic, one of the issues i would say I need to work on going into 3rd year would be efficient planning and time management, sticking to a schedule to make sure I have time for every part of making a film. Over the lockdown period, I was unable to work on any more animation part of the project but I added as much as i could to the preproduction.

This is as far as i got with the first background for my grad assist project. Looking back at it, i am happy with how it turned out, however i can also pick out points where improvement could be made, and also a way to simplify and make the painting effective.

This was the only background I was able to work on for my grad assist project. The first picture (black and white) was the guide i received and was tasked to turning them into a coloured background. As it was my first time using colour to make a digital background I wasn’t really confident in using colour so most of the work i did was experimental (some ideas worked and some didn’t, in particular the second picture and the way i went about painting the cherry blossoms) trying out different ways to blend and using the different functions Photoshop had to offer. this background unfortunately took me about 4 hours to create in colour.

For our mixed media project, when we got the postcard we would be working with for the week, our initial idea was to write a narrating poetry to animate to.

A PERFORMER

Bone the mime, performing on the street,

On a hot sunny day, struggling to make ends meet,

Bone mimes hard, trying with no success,

The reason why? Well his life is a mess.

There on his head lie his last strand of hair,

Just the one single strand hanging on without a care

Opportunity arise, as a spectator walks by,

He throws a comb at Bone, but why but why?

(The comb attacks the single strand of hair on Bones head and flies off with it)

There it flies, his hair held hostage,

To Mr Bones disadvantage,

There he goes, after his foe,

His last hope, not ready to let go.

He chases and paces his enemy down

Hit with a surprise, he drops to the ground

He looks to the door, but no door in sight

With no key at hand, he pushes through with might

(Bone sprinting through to the farm)

He gets to the farm

Yet still not so calm

Still on the chase

Trying to keep up the pace

He spots a cow ahead in his path

Staring at the comb like a psychopath

With its mouth open wide and mischief in his eyes

However because of the duration of how long our animation was meant to be and the time limit we had, we decided that the poetry route would take too long to animate and it was a bit too complex for the project, so we went a different direction

We tested the walk cycle with our first background we made out of cut out cardboard. We decided to stick with the walk cycle because we liked the quirky movement it had, even tho it wasn’t a perfect walk cycle, we felt like it added to the character

This is the final rendition of my quadruped run cycle. I am quite happy with how the animation turned out but I feel like i spent longer than I should have. One of the challenges I faced while animating this was trying to keep the size of the head and each limb fairly accurate and the same size in each frame. If i had more time to work on this and add some improvements, I would work more on the design and add colour and detail to bring it more to life. I have also been told that the shape of the lions mouth isn’t the right shape and that its a bit too big so if I had time i would fix this part aswell.

This is my hand in for the obstacle course project. I have had fun animating this sequence. Because the project had a time limit of 20 seconds, I am unable to develop the animation further from what i have already, however if i have time to go back to it I would carry on animating it so that the character can go through all the obstacles in the scene.
