Jolyan turned when he heard the familiar voice and instantly felt embarrassed. Henry was a regular and Head Chef at a very very fancy restaurant. The fact that he even chose him for his bread baffled and flattered Jolyan and now he was here to see him barely opening up on time and with his son on his hip. Even for his quaint, vintage little bakery, he didn’t want people to think badly of him… least of all Henry, who made him smile far too much.
“Oh, Henry, I’m so sorry.” Jolyan apologised, “My babysitter fell through for the day and I— well, I don’t have anyone else to look after him.” Not that he trusted with the most precious thing in his life, anyway. He was embarrassed and it showed in his smile. “The shutters, if you wouldn’t mind?” He asked, as he went to heaving the shutters up on the other side of the shops window. “There we go, sweet pea.” He murmured into Jude’s hair and flicked the sign to ‘open’. “What can I get for you today?” Jolyan asked as he finally turned back to Henry and led him inside his quaint little bakery, “I really am so sorry.” Especially since he’d just helped him open up for the morning.
Henry never knew what to do around babies and he hovered awkwardly, wanting to help but not really knowing what to do. Jolyan was part of the reason why he came to this bakery over the others in the area. While he wanted to help support other local businesses and source good products that he didn’t have time to make himself, he selfishly wanted to see the baker every day. It was often the high point in his day. Now it felt extra stupid considering he had a son and likely a whole family that loved him and he was just swooning like a teenager.
“Please, don’t apologise,” he said quickly. The wiggling kid in his arms seemed to have a life of his own and he wanted to help. “No problem.” He quickly went into action, pulling the shutters own to let the light pour in before he followed him back in towards the counter of the bakery. “I didn’t know you had a kid,” he said, still looking at the happy smiling face of Jolyan’s child. “Sorry, that sounded accusatory. I was just surprised. I was just hoping to get the regular kind of stuff. A few baguettes and some rolls, if you’ve got it of course.”
