i feel kind of like i'm grieving everytime i watch a really good movie, cause like what if i never watch a movie this good again? i need to feel like that again!!

Atonement.

Story.

Atonement is mainly about a couple who had to separate because of a misunderstanding, a lie. And it's also about what you think is true and what isn't. But mostly, in my perception, it's a story about Briony, her jealous, regrets and an attempt at redemption, even after having ruined many lives.

It is true that Briony was just a little girl, confused of what she saw. But it's also true that her judgements and mind were filled with a kind of anger, or a feeling of rejection and injustice when she accused Robbie of the crime of attacking her cousin. She was blind, seeing and imagining only what she wanted to see. And, though she was just a 13 years old girl, her actions had major consequences. Besides destroying Cecelia and Robbie's love, she let the chance for the real criminal to go free. Even worse, she gave him the chance to marry his own victim and remain unpunished for the rest of his life, unlike his sister and friend, who suffered that worst undeserved fates. And besides, she was the only one who remained alive, able to tell the story in whatever way she saw fit.

In the end of the movie, I felt a bit betrayed by the story. But I think that's the real point. Briony had to make that whole story up just to feel better with herself, after all the damaged she put those people onto. And then she had to go on living her life with all of that regrets and guilt, and I think that's her real punishment in the end.

Visuals.

The main force of the movie is its visuals, cinematography and score. Joe Wright gave value to the sad and even somehow frightening story. The production design was stunning, the photography put me right next to the characters, and the score was guiding all my emotions. Also, the editing giving the rhythm and building a big anticipation sometimes.
