Parabatai. ( @hercns )
darkness had settled over the room like a thick blanket. Will lay in a mountain of blankets on the floor by the cold hearth, eyes wide open despite their need to close to get some rest before dawn came and the two boys would be roused from their sleeping places for breakfast. no matter how hard he tried, his brain simply could not rid itself of the question that plagued it. “jem,” he began, breaking the silence “do you think benedict lightwood summoned a demon himself or was it more of an opportunistic thing?” he turned from his back to his side to face the bed, eyes hardly able to make out the lump that was jem’s body in the large bed. “ Like he stumbled upon a demon that just happened to think he was worth giving the pox to rather than killing him on sight?”
he’s been trying to sleep for what feels like hours but likely has only been one. dawn will be there soon & he knows they’ll be expected to rise but it will be… troubling to say the least. he feels stiff, even there in the comfort of a bed. he groans when Will speaks, barely restraining himself from hurling one of the precious few pillows at the other before he hears him our & slowly settles again. the question is oddly thought provoking even if he doesn’t want to think of the intimacies of one Benedict Lightwood. shifting a bit, he turns so he can face his parabatai in the dim light filtering in from the window. ‘ I don’t know, ’ he says finally, still mulling everything over before he speaks again. ‘ demons like mischief. perhaps… the prolonged agony of the pox… was better than instant results. why, pray tell, are you thinking about this just before dawn? ’
will shrugged gently, pulling the heavy comforter closer to his body. why was he thinking about benedict lightworm’s sex life? or said man’s contraction of demon pox? “i have for years said that demon pox existed, and now that i have been proven to be right i wonder how exactly that kind of... behavior... comes to actually happen. the question came to mind and i am unable to banish it at the moment. the idea may plague my mind for the rest of my living days.” will was accustomed to talk of disease that came when one found himself taking to bed a woman that he scarcely knew due to charlotte’s care about his well being and the rather frequent late nights of ‘debauchery’. but how and why would anyone want to find themselves entangled with a demon? how and why would a demon be summoned or found for such a thing? the thoughts were similar to that of watching a house being engulfed in flames, not knowing if anyone was inside. horrifying, but there was a morbid fascination with how the flames ate at the home until it collapsed into a pile of ash and stone. “perhaps i’ve allowed my mind to wander too much.” will murmured, yawning ever so slightly as he attempted to get comfortable in his makeshift bed. why he and jem both were unable to find sleep was a mystery, though will was more than happy to share his early morning questions with his best friend in an attempt to cease the thought from keeping him awake any longer.

“ and of that i have no doubt, “ she answers, there was no doubt in tessa’s mind their baby was loved. would be loved. by them, and their family and friends. and it was with that love they could face whatever may result from her father’s blood. she lets out a soft breath as his arms go about her, one she had had not realized she’d been holding. her eyes shut, and seconds pass, and her arms go around him as well. between them, was the soft, growing swell of her middle. their unborn child. her eyes open, and she knows he’s right. it’s been something she’s also feared — that it wasn’t her being a warlock that would hurt them, but most mundane of things — that resulted in a lot of her early life being in isolation or being treated badly. “ children ? “ she’s trying to lighten the mood, though she knows it won’t work “ and will we have more?” she wasn’t opposed to it. not at all. she’d also never been one to back down from a fight. she’d been fighting most of her life. “ i’m not afraid of it, either. we will do we must, and together. “
she looks up, and she’s lost by the endless expanse of love she sees in those bright blue eyes. every single word he said he believed, tessa could tell by the way he looked at her. though her mind had not cleared of fear. her face flushes, though, and she can’t think beyond how lucky she’d really been. to be able to love one whose heart was bigger than anything. a startling and beautiful expanse. “ at least with your eyes, “ she teases, then, “ if any child of ours has your heart, they indeed will be a lucky one. “ the mention of sleep has her frowning because, she had not been completely honest with him. she’d been dreaming of her father prior, “i’ve already spoke to jem — when we first found out. “
will smiled gently, fingers careful yet precise as they rested against her back, her body unconstrained by corsets and gowns with heavy boning. he could feel the softness of it under his hands, the way her body moved under his touch something he always loved, hands dropping to rest on her lower back and gently kneading into the skin there, well aware that the exrta weight of the child within her caused extra strain that he often attemtped to alleiviate when he could. Will decided he liked her like this, in a flowing nightgown, their child growing inside of her, her hair down and flowing rather than tied up in tight knots and updos. he was thankful that he had the opportunity to see tessa this way, as it was truly a privilege. “we might have more.” will seemed a tad embarrassed at the slip up, pink blossoming on his cheeks as his wife noticed the mistake. “if that’s something you want.” the man couldn’t help but feel wide awake when he spoke to tessa, she was better than any coffee or tea, better than jumping into a frozen lake. she capitvated the attention of all those who had the mere opportunity to be in her presence and kept it for as long as she remained in the room. it was not a question in will’s mind that he was the lucky one, having tessa as his wife. “ you told jem already?” rather than feel jealous, or angry, or upset by the revelation will simply shook his head, taking a moment to rearrange the plan he had made in his mind on how to deal with the problem of his wife’s anxiety regarding their first born. “alright. we’ll send a fire message asking if he has found anything, maybe invite magnus to tea to ask him to see if he can find any information within the downworld? how does that sound?”

“ it isn’t your blood that could do something to our child, will, it’s mine, “ she said finally, “ mortmain said my father was a prince of hell, “ yet she turns to him, head tilting up to look at him, at his face. she’d woke him up again, she realizes. she always had, midnight trecs to the library where she searched for an answer that would never come. “ we have no way of knowing what that means —” a quarter eidolon demon. a shadowhunter who’s grandfather was a demon. the anxiety was solely from the fact that tessa — was petrified of failing their child. even before they were born. failing them by lineage alone. it wasn’t the idea of them having infernal traits, it was the fallout she knew would come. that came on her already for being what she was.
“ what if it’s more like me then like you? “ it comes out quiet, she knows what he’ll say. she knows he believes it wholeheartedly. and she would love their child just the same. she just wasn’t blind to the way shadowhunters treated her. she worried for their future, if they took more after her. he was right, though. it could wait until morning. the cipy of demons, demons , demons ( and more demons ) lay forgotten where she’d sat. “ you’re right… i just — feel as if knowing the truth would help. in some way. though there isn’t exactly a — “ not as bad prince of hell. “ you know. “ she’s worrying over nothing, nothing but a distinct possibility. “ maybe we could ask him, to help.”
will gave a gentle knowing sigh, his hand drifting up to tuck a stray hair behind her ear before resting gently on her cheek. “ we have no way of knowing what it means for our child, but i know that they will be loved and cared for, and that there will be no doubt in their mind that they have parents that love them very much.” he pressed his lips against her temple gently, wrapping strong arms around her middle to hold her close and perhaps give tessa some form of comfort. “you and i have faced a lot of adversity together, my love, and we will continue to face it and challenge the thoughts of those around us until we can create a future in which you and i and our children can love and be loved and simply exist without scrutiny.” there was a suffocating feeling that came with the mere questioning of tessa’s personhood, an inexplicable pain that was not his to bear and yet he bore it anyway. everything that was tessa was good, and yet there were times she could not see it and will felt terribly that he could not relieve her the burden of her anxiety, her fears.
“if our child is more like you than me, they will be lucky. they will be cunning and charming and beautiful, and when they speak they may captivate crowds.” he spoke softly, minimal space made between their bodies if only so that will could look down and see those grey eyes that he often found himself lost in. “ we should be lucky if our child is anything like you, tessa.” he meant the emotion put into every single word, his love for the mother of his child and the reason for the breath in his lungs greater than anything else he could ever think of. “ in the morning i will send a fire message to jem and magnus to see if they could keep an ear to the ground in case they hear anything, and you and i can keep looking, but for now i think you and i should get back to bed. “

it had been quite some time since there had been much activity in the london institute. for some time all of the adventure had moved overseas, and it left will rather bored in the institute. sure, he had jessamine, but she wasn’t always the best company. sometimes tessa would visit, and even though she couldn’t see him she spoke as if he was right there beside her. it made him feel just the slightest bit alive, seeing her and hearing her voice again. the halls had been quiet for a few weeks and will occupied his time by reading the paper that was left out by one of the current residents after breakfast each morning until it was taken away by someone from the cleaning staff and he was left looking for something else to do. as per usual he found himself going for a bit of a walk in the mid-morning, but when will returned in the afternoon he found a much different scene than the deserted building he was used to. music floated faintly through the halls from the radio in the kitchen, staff moving quickly through the halls talking of unexpected company and the herondale boy that happened to be visiting for whatever reason.
a herondale.
the realization had will moving with purpose throughout the institute to search out the company, poking his head into several sitting rooms before finding him in the slightly more modern library full of century-old books that will had defaced with his initials and thoughts back when they were fresh off the press. this herondale didn’t look like himself or his wife, but there was a warmth that came with catching the other’s eyes and realizing they were the same warm hue as his own son’s.
“i hope you’re a fan of the classics, because that’s all we really have.” he leaned against the near waist height display cabinet against the wall, giving jace lots of space while also intruding on whatever he was doing in the library in the first place. “personally, i enjoy the work of oscar wilde.” it had been much too long since he had the opportunity to speak to a relative of his, and will felt a sense of familial warmth towards the other man even without having met him before. he didn’t need to. a herondale is a herondale, and all herondales were family. “ if you’re more of a jane austen man, my daughter left her collection here with us somewhere. If you’re looking for something else, I’m not sure you’ll find it here.” a ghost will annoying jace || @paraquacktai
Jace had been intentionally keeping from reading the letter addressed to him — the distinct shape of an invitation of some sort, and he found it odd that a warlock would use a system he thought would seem so…archaic. Then again, he hadn’t been responding to Tessa’s fire messages either. This newer, more open to the world version of himself knew he was being incredibly rude, and most likely upsetting the woman a great deal. But beneath that was an angry boy who disliked the family he’d been birthed from — that didn’t want to recognized he belonged somewhere that wasn’t with his siblings, The Lightwoods.
Unfortunate for him, his generations-removed grandmother had a direct line to someone he greatly loved. Through Magnus, she’d gotten to Alec’s ear and asked about him. If anyone could convince that angry self Jace had hidden of anything, it was his parabatai. No, he wasn’t being forced to bond — being driven out, as he’d dramatically put it. Jace Herondale was the head of an institute on a diplomatic visit to London. Far be it for a soldier to argue with his Consul.
Warlock Lightwood-Bane himself had personally portalled Jace to his destination. He handed his things to an eager-to-please staff, and soon enough he was left to himself. Were they still waiting on a head for this institute? He couldn’t be bothered to remember at just that moment, and busied himself with exploring.
The adventure was cut short when he beheld a library with books older than he could probably imagine. Only a few steps separated him and the first shelf, Jace grabbing down the first book he recognized. A very old copy of a Charles Dickens novel, it didn’t seem brittle as much as well loved. It was annotated, handwriting he was sure Clary would call ‘old fashioned’ making comments across many of the pages. He replaced that book onto the shelf and had pulled down another when he saw someone at the door, watching him.
He held the book in two hands as the man spoke, the corners of his mouth dipping in a slight frown. Something wasn’t quite right with him. Not only was he dressed out of a time period long passed, his presence was faint and only something Jace had felt a few times in his life.
A ghost.
“ No Emily Bronte? A shame. ” He held up the book he was holding. “ I guess I’ll make due with Sir Doyle and Mr. Holmes. ”
will looked at jace fondly, head tipped ever so slightly to the side as he watched the other handle his old books with such care and careful consideration, despite each tome being much, much older than the herondale whose hands held them. “I’m afraid I overlooked her work for the longest time. The one copy I had of wuthering heights is likely still with my wife, I believe she took it with her when she left this place.” she still visited on occasion, but he more often found himself very much solely in the company of one jessamine lovelace. she was as good company dead as she was alive. “ It is worth reading, wuthering heights. i did not quite understand it the first time i read it, but upon a second reading i found myself understanding why tess loved it so much.” tess, tess, tessa was still on his mind after all the years he spent within the four walls of the institute, and there was a faint hope that he was still in hers, and that herself and jem could find love and happiness with eachother. “what have you come to london for, if you don’t find my asking horribly intrusive.” he became aware the more he spoke of how his dialect may sound stilted and strange to someone of such modern times, where motor cars had become the norm and one could be reached by pressing a button on a tiny sensor-like box. “I don’t see many herondales anymore, i pray that it is because they have gone off to do great things and not because of demons being particularly fond of dining on herondale flesh. finding trouble with demonic entities seems to run in the family just as much as poor decision making.” the ghost shook his head ever so slightly, moving towards the other man only to reach up to grasp a book on a higher shelf with a steady hand and pausing for a moment before he pulled it off the shelf, concentrating a great deal of energy on holding it in his own two hands. the cover was a deep red, though when he opened the book to flip through the pages there were no notes, no scribblings of witty commentary and off colour thoughts on the material within. it was pristine instead, as if kept untouched for the longest time.

tessa hadn’t been able to sleep. ever since learning they were going to have a child, she’d been plagued with nightmares. nightmares of a nameless demon that had fathered her. and what that might mean for the baby. mortmain had been so sure that — he had been sure of the power a child of hers would have. so, she had found herself getting up, leaving the room they’d shared and finding herself in the library.
the book propped in tessa’s lap had been one she’d been opening and closing as if she expect to find anything she didn’t already know. if he was a prince of hell, surely he’d be in there. but she didn’t know much else about him . she looks up, hearing him, and she lets out something of a shaky breath as she rises. “ it could mean nothing… but it could mean everything. “
he had hardly stirred when she had first risen from their shared bed, but her prolonged absence seemed to have a profound effect on his sleep as he found himself awake, alone, and quite drowsy. the institute was quiet and the bed still warm from tessa’s body, which meant there was no immediate danger. despite this, he rose from bed and haphazardly pulled on trousers that had been flung onto the floor earlier that night before making his way out of the warm bedroom and into the slightly cooler hallway. will knew where exactly to look for tessa, it wasn’t uncommon as of late that he would find himself making the same walk in the middle of the night to the library in the same state of half awareness. it must be difficult, having to carry a child. he couldn’t imagine the stress it must have been causing tessa not only physically but emotionally. he stifled a yawn as he turned the corner and pushed open the heavy double doors to see her sitting on the couch, flipping through one of his latest editions of demons, demons, demons (now with more demons), brow furrowed in frustration. “caridad,” his voice was very much still affected by sleep, a low rumble that carried a slight lilt that was largely absent when he was fully awake. “i know you’re worried, but you have to try to not work yourself up.” he had been leaning a tad against the door, but then moved towards his wife with purpose, taking one of her hands in his own and intertwining their fingers. “ it could mean everything but it could also mean nothing, which means it does not have a time constraint to which we need to apply ourselves. which means if you would like, we can do research together in the morning when you and i are much better rested and can come to better conclusions.” he brought her hand to his lips, brushing a faint kiss to her knuckles, wanting nothing more than his wife to feel at ease with herself as she went through one of the most terrifying time for any woman. “ we can’t change however our child is born, but we can love them and cherish them all the same, and raise them to be a good person- no matter what.”
