there’s something that i need to address concerning white people who write muses of color. if you’re gonna do it, don’t half-ass it. this means that you need to do your research, you need to be respectful, you need to put just as much love and effort into that muse as you would your white one. you don’t get brownie points or a pat on the back for deciding to write a poc. most importantly, THIS IS NOT A TREND. it’s hundreds of thousands of marginalized people wanting to see themselves properly represented — and that is NEVER going to go away.
DO NOT try and use your muse being a poc as a way to garner followers, because people will see right through it. there’s so much more to writing a poc than slapping on a brown fc and thinking people will flock to them. having a muse that is white and thinking that you can simply switch out the faceclaim with a poc is LAZY AND DISRESPECTFUL. it doesn’t make you woke, it makes you ignorant. you need to be OPEN TO WHAT OTHER POC HAVE TO SAY ABOUT YOUR PORTRAYAL — and if you’re not, you’re only hurting yourself in the end.
unless you’ve already got a decent following from another blog, chances are that your blog will not be immediately be popular over night. sad as it is to say it, that comes with the territory, and i think that many muns who are poc themselves already know this. if you abandon your blog for that very reason, it shows that you weren’t all that passionate about that muse to begin with. it takes TIME, PATIENCE, AND COMMITMENT. if you can’t do that or lack the proper decency to be open to criticism, do thorough research, or to be respectful, please do not bother.
