I met David Bowie when I was 14 and he became a hero to me - because he was an artist and because he was a genius who had the time to be kind. I’d never met such an extraordinary artist before, and I haven’t since - the world will be a greyer place without him. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones.

James Bond and John Steed (1960s versions)

James Bond is an exclusively male fantasy: all he has to do is look at a woman and she falls into bed with him. If the look fails, he pursues her until she finally succumbs to his charms; often she has resisted not because she doesn’t immediately want Bond’s body, but because of some external difficulty (she’s in league with the baddies, she thinks he’s in league with the baddies, etc). If pursuit fails, Bond (and Fleming and the filmmakers) imply that there is something “wrong” with her: her lack of response to Bond is codified in the implication that she doesn’t like men at all (see: Pussy Galore, who is canonically lesbian but who still winds up going to bed with Bond, thus “curing” her). But the whole implication is clear: all women want Bond, even the ones who don’t want men, and there is no place in the Bond universe for a female who doesn’t. Saying no to Bond really means yes.  

John Steed has no such difficulties, and no such ego; nor does he let his libido get in the way of actually doing his job. He flirts with almost every woman on screen; but as much as he flirts, he’s rejected as much as he is accepted. And he’s OK with this. He moves on. He doesn’t make a habit of pursuing women who tell him no. He never gets a woman killed, and he rarely puts one in deliberate danger without her consent. Unlike Bond, he actually has conversations with women on a pretty regular basis. He likes women, not as commodities or something to be possessed, but as human beings. 

So let’s not compare James Bond to John Steed, especially when it comes to women. Jimmy loses every time.

I never faced up to the fact I’d one day have to acknowledge that David Bowie isn’t immortal. This morning that news hit me with all the power of a freight train. David has passed away aged 69, days after releasing his wonderful new album Blackstar. He was surrounded by his loved ones, and died peacefully. I am utterly heartbroken and am still struggling to accept that this is real.

All I can say is this: thank you, David. Thank you so very much for everything you did. Your art has enriched my life massively, and I know it will continue to do so. I send all my love and support to your loved ones, and hope they’re comforted by the fact that so many others will be grieving with them.

The accuracy of this blows me away. The moment I realized he was gone I broke into tears. He will always be King Jareth to me. My children and I have made so many memories of him, his music, and his movies. I will always carry him with me. He may never have known me, but my heart has always been filled with joy at the thought of him. I’ll miss him always. 💚

River Song’s Doctor Who life in order

Gosh, River Song’s had a confusing life in Doctor Who. Born in the same episode where she revealed her true self to the Doctor, and (apparently) killing him while simultaneously shooting at her younger self – well, as the Twelfth Doctor commented in tonight’s Christmas special you’d need a flowchart to work it all out.

But luckily you now have that flowchart, as here at RadioTimes.com we’ve put together our best guess for River’s personal timeline. In other words, we’ve mapped out her chronological life from her birth in 2011’s a Good Man Goes to War to her final goodbye in 2013’s The Name of the Doctor, and you can see it all in order below (with recurring episodes colour-coded).

Not included are any off-screen adventures (so sorry, no Jim the Fish) or spin-off media, but apart from that we think it’s pretty complete. We’ve even thrown in a couple of DVD minisodes featuring River (First Night/Last Night) that were originally supposed to cap off her story.
