‘ oh, trinket, darling, leave them alone, won’t you ? ’ it appears that no, vex’ahlia’s pet newfie will certainly not be leaving the other person on the sidewalk alone and will instead be bounding over to the person in question. in fact, vex is pretty much unceremoniously dragged down the street to meet them. he mostly seems interested in sniffing around the other person and wanting to be pet, but she still looks mortified. ‘ trinket ! sit ! ’ this he does do. the dog looks as pleased with himself as he possibly can. ‘ i’m so sorry. i know he’s huge but i promise that he is really very friendly. ’
“if you see corinne,” bryce said, “please don’t tell her i was eating at the counter.” she put down her fork and wiped her mouth on the back of her hand – better there than on her dress. anyway, it was corinne’s fault; it’s not like there was anyone who could take over while bryce stepped away from work to eat. not that anyone in town was likely to come in looking for anything in the back of the shop; she often wondered if corinne realized what it meant to be in a town. “anyway…” she cleared her throat and stood up straight. “welcome to willow street, where we carry kansas’ most charming collection of antiques and artifacts. my name is bryce quinlan and i would be happy to help you in every way.” she recited the greeting exactly as she had been trained to, doing her best not to sound robotic, hoping instead she didn’t sound downright sardonic.
' i’d hate to meet the person who would rat you out for eating. don’t worry, my lips are sealed. ’ for good measure, she pinches her fingers together and drags them across her lips, pretending to zip them shut. cat remains quiet through the other woman’s practiced greeting, mouth forming into an amused smile. she’s heard it a few times before during previous visits to the willow street shop, albeit with some variation in tone. ‘ i’m hoping you can direct me toward something like an orrery or an armillary sphere. ’ ideally, she wants to bring an astronomy antique to the science section of the library. likely, she will bring it home with her.

it felt like stiles was at university again, studying for exams he was destined to always suffer through and flipping through pages for hours and hours. except now, the research continues with on going investigations. always learning. always finding the connections. “ooooh,” he hummed out quietly, plopping another thick book to go along with the growing stack in his arms. it was hard to choose, but surely it was a limit. so stilinski managed to contain himself by stopping a four textbooks.
almost pridefully marching to the checkout counter, the clumsy and overall spaz didn’t make it very far. unfortunately, one foot stumbled upon the other and the textbooks made a clattering noise against the tile floor. needless to say, stiles’ cheeks were flushed an obnoxious pink.
“ignore that, ignore that. nothing to see here, move along,” he muttered out in defense, a nervous chuckle leaving his lips.
the cart of returned books sits idle as caterina skims the pages of one of the aforementioned novels that was about to be put back into its place. it’s why she doesn’t notice the textbooks flying out of the young man’s hands until she hears them crash onto the floor. her head flies up and the book closes, quickly forgotten and discarded on a shelf so that she can move to help pick the fallen books up.
‘ don’t worry, textbooks like that can take a bit of a beating, ’ she starts, crouching down to slide one of the books toward her. ‘ i think they have to be built that way so they can withstand the stresses and frustrations of students, ’ cat jokes in hopes it’ll ease some of his embarrassment.
she stands up when she has two of the textbooks in hand, glancing at the covers. ‘ must be quite the research you’re doing. ’

HEADCANONS:
despite having many family members, caterina is not particularly close with any of them as all the amell children were sent to separate boarding schools as soon as they were old enough (litcherally six years old) at the behest of their grandparents.
cat attended a boarding school in paris from ages 6-13 and ages 13-18 were spent in milan. only two months of every year were spent at home with her parents and siblings. many letters were written
she developed a deep love of reading and learning at these schools, spending all her time in their libraries.
when cat returned home for the summer one year, she learned from her father that her mother had disappeared months earlier. they hadn’t succeeded in finding her and they never would. cat has opted to believe that her mother was so distraught by never truly knowing any of her children, that she left so she wouldn’t have to bear the reality of it.
during her last year of school, she decided to apply to universities/colleges in small-ish towns because her home wasn’t much of a home anyway and she wanted to make a new one somewhere she felt like she could connect with the community
lo and behold, decimation !
she’s been in decimation for five years, completing both her bachelor’s and master’s at ccoud.

HEADCANONS (tw for death & house fire):
vex and vax lived with their mother in dedham, essex until they were ten years old, when their father learned of their existence and took them to live in london
living with their father was, in short, a Bad Time, as he had ridiculous expectations of the twins, so they ran away when they were sixteen
they returned to dedham to look for their mother, but they learned that their childhood home burned down with elaina inside
the twins were unhoused for a few years, traveling around from town to town to do what they had to for survival (sometimes theft, sometimes odd jobs)
they eventually ended up in the united states, finding their own apartment, and finally working, studying, and living in relative peace
and then, in a turn of events, the twins were attacked on their way home which ultimately led to the death of vax’ildan as he stepped in front of the knife that was meant for vex’ahlia
as a result, vex picked up and left, not wanting to stay somewhere filled with memories of her twin brother (nor having the money to do so) and she ended up in decimation
also, on another note, somewhere in these 28 years she got a brown newfie dog that she loves very much
WHAT THEY’RE PLANNING TO DO IN DECIMATION: after spending 28 years operating as half of a whole, she’s essentially arrived in decimation to learn how to exist by herself. she's working at gloria’s midnight diner as a server as a way to make money while she works on her degree.
