           AND TENDERNESS WAS EITHER a hit or a miss when it came to Shouta. Either bringing him closer to the person delivering it to him, or pushing the two of them further away –––– it either felt so comforting, or so painful. He sucks in a sharp breath, steadying a mind that was quickly dizzying –– unsure of what to do at this point.

     He decides he wants to pull her in –– starved of affection, this was a moment where tenderness didn’t ache his already bruised heart. However, was it right to do so? Immediately, he questions whether it would be unwanted, for him to tug her in, as well.

    He finally exhales, calmness washes over him as he does so. He decides not to panic. It was okay.

         “…”     He doesn’t mean to be silent after they part. Equally, he doesn’t mean to avert his eyes.

“––––thank you,” is finally said, “––i don’t know what is… correct to say.”

   A moment where he was unsure of himself; unsure of what words to choose.

 “––most people don’t go this far,” a pause, “–it’s… appreciated.”

      sayuri quietly worries that it was a MISTAKE to touch him -- especially with the way he inhaled, with the way he felt against her, and the way he averts his eyes away from her afterward.  she feels cold.  her touch has always been DANGEROUS -- she has shocked people throughout her life because of the currents moving inside of her.  ( she has scars from being unable to control her quirk.  she hides them underneath the long sleeve of her costume. )  he looks so small there.  not like the badass hero everyone knows.  

        he thanks her, and sayuri wonders...  still.  she smiles as best she can.  “there’s no correct way to say,” she offers softly.  “if you’d -- like me to leave you alone --”  but he mentions the last part, and that hurts.  she knows.  she knows what it’s like to be isolated and alone.  it’s her very existence, as much as she tries to hide it now.  she’s ALONE.  alone.  she’s always been alone... she’ll always be alone.  but it hurts to hear him say that.  “w--well,” she clears her throat.  “you can count on me, aizawa-senpai.”  but she has her own sadness too and avoids his eyes.  “i -- i should go.  i have papers to grade.”  she wants to give him an out.

before sayuri could control her quirk, she used to accidentally electrocute people all the time. so then she would just stop touching everyone completely.

      And it was almost endearing to be cared for in such a way –––– so much so, that it even manages to shatter the chilling expression Aizawa often wore. Lips delicately curl into a subtle smile; if anything, he found the irony humorous.

      “–––you act like it hasn’t already happened,” he gives a light tap to the scar on his cheek, “––pushing myself has always had consequences – maybe one day i’ll learn.”

that’s... SAD.  and a sad reality that they face.  sayuri wrinkles her nose, brows furrowing.  she eyes the scar.  USJ.  getting there and seeing him like that -- she thinks about it still.  he and thirteen were in such terrible shape.  “plus ultra,” she says, and she feels everything in her tighten.  carry on.  push through it. . .

she can’t stop herself.  sayuri crosses over to him and pulls him into a hug, SQUEEZING him tight.  she should’ve asked if it was okay, but she can just see how tired he is.  everyone can, but there’s something else.  he’d been like this when they were younger  --  she used to watch from afar at the boy who could make quirks disappear.  she was too angry back then.  she’s forced herself to change.  working with endeavor changed her whole outlook on this life as a pro-hero. . .  and the more they face, the less she feels inclined to keep this façade up.  “i can cover for you.”  she offers quietly.  “my quirk has me bursting with a lot of energy.  you can take more breaks, aizawa-senpai.”  she tightens her grip before releasing him.  he has midnight and present mic, but -- but she wants to be his friend, too.  ( she’s always wanted to be PRECIOUS to someone. )

          And a frown quickly lines his face at the response. Charitable actions weren’t exactly something he expected openly –––– associating it with pity, with a need for others to CARE for him (when he was perfectly capable of taking care of himself). With a snarl riding his features, he stands to his feet –––

         ––– but before he can say anything, a loud rumble echoes from the pits of his stomach.                            (Maybe… he WAS hungry).

     “…”

With a huff, he rubs behind his head.

         “…it’s not entirely unwelcome, i guess.”

OH. 

his response shocks her.  ( ha ha, get it?  lightning? )  rakurai stands there, rubbing the back of her neck, almost mirroring his own movement.  “good.”  she’s grinning all of a sudden, HAPPY that he will accept her offer.  hell, she’d been expecting him to yell at her.  damn it, though -- sayuri knows their not close, even though she’s craved that kind of bond that he shares with mic and midnight.  ( not just with him -- she just wants FRIENDS. )  “i hope you’ll enjoy it, senpai.”

        And something so genuine doesn’t fall on deaf ears. Of course, that didn’t mean he knew how to exactly respond to such a statement –––– he agreed with her, but something tells him he shouldn’t voice that so openly.

     “–––thanks,” his tone makes his words come off as half-hearted (unintentionally), “––to stay here, you have to work hard – regardless of whether you have the energy to or not.”

       “ -- -- lucky for me, i have the energy.”  sayuri responds, voice soft.  there’s a hesitance as she looks him over.  does he?  does he really?  her lips purse together.  “don’t overwork yourself, aizawa-senpai.”  rakurai gives him a gentle smile, genuine.  sweet.  she didn’t know she could be this kind.  if you’d asked her in her teenage years, she would’ve laughed at this WEAKLING she is now.  or has her strength become her kindness?  ( there is still anger, deep down. )  “you could hurt yourself.”

❝  EH ?!  ❞     With the paper sliding into her sphere of view / letter grade rising over the horizon, leaden / mercury-dipped shock came crashing down against her shoulders / a failing rocket colliding against the atmosphere / ablaze :  prompting her to slouch over the Mars hued mark in disbelief. D ?!  How ?!  She was usually so much better at literature !  With her gaze pulled between the paper and her teacher / like a circumbinary planet oscillating within the orbit of two stars, she finally caught the words tangling in her throat and launched them past her lips.     ❝  No, no, no !  I don’t think it’s Aizawa sensei’s fault… I mean, sure he makes us work hard and he’s pretty scary, but… I don’t think… I don’t know… WAH !  ❞     Like a setting sun, her head fell upon the desk in a display of frustration / crestfallen with a huff escaping her deflating cheeks.   

she watches as uraraka admits defeat. she PITIES the girl; an unexpected grade can blindsight a student. sayuri’s brow raises curiously. “well,” she says softly, pursing her lips together in concern. “have you been on your internship? that can also DISTRACT the mind... you can talk to me, uraraka-chan.” sayuri wants to make herself more AVAILABLE for students, even if she works very hard to balance her teaching and hero lives -- these kids need them. sayuri wished she had more guidance during her youth. she had to deal with that emotional burden alone. ( and she came out FINE. . . right?)

       A slow blink of tired eyes ––– while it was evident she didn’t fully understand,          her heart was in the right place, at least.

             “––––i try to sleep when i can, but it’s more difficult than it looks.”

she’s quiet for a moment as she considers the DIFFICULTY of sleep. with the electricity running through her constantly, she feels awake most times, forgoing sleep. that leaves her mind alone at the wrong hours of the night, conjuring thoughts, remembering harder times. 

sayuri understands, in a way. her lips purse together. “you work so hard.” she comments with a small little smile. “it’s very admirable.”

         And sleep was a complicated thing for the teacher ––––– often either kept between sleeping so heavily that nothing could wake him, or sleeping so lightly that even the faintest noise would cause him to stir. Wandering between dissociation from surroundings, or hypervigilance ––– by the time she’d stepped up to him, he was already awake.

     He grunts, slowly pulling himself up from the desk he’d fallen asleep at. Not exactly looking his best – with sleep in his eyes, and drool slathered on his chin – he lets out a yawn, before turning to her.

    “–––i’m going to assume this isn’t for me,” he says, wiping at his face, “–i don’t need it.”

-- -- DAMN. sayuri halts in her careful backing up, arms still outstretched from placing the bento down. damn. she’s caught. why didn’t she just use her quirk to get the hell out of there? she blinks at her colleague, taking note of the droll on his chin. she clears her throat. 

“as -- a matter of fact,” rakurai begins, sheepishly standing tall, “it is, aizawa-senpai.” she--hasn’t gotten out of the habit of saying that. “i had extra food, and i thought why not?” she smiles weakly, rubbing a hand behind the back of her neck.

small, sad rakurai headcanons

sayuri feels very embarrassed about growing up in an orphanage, even more so when she’s in the hero course at UA. if she manages to have any friends, she’d never invite them over… nor would she probably have money to hang out with them after school.

even as a teacher, sayuri doesn’t feel connected with others. she tries her best to be enthusiastic and happy – and she has a big heart that had been hiding under all her pain. she tends to watch more than interact with her peers, unless there’s obvious interest in her presence. she doesn’t want to be a burden to anyone. for her students, she keeps a bright attitude, because she wants to encourage them to be the best they can be. 

sayuri decides to become a teacher after the only friend she had was murdered by stain. instead of allowing herself to be driven to madness by her death, she instead turns her sights on making the next generations stronger and happier. 

while sayuri admired her upper-classmates (in particular, aizawa, yamada, and kayama), she would not have bothered them in fear of her aggressive reputation (this could change via verse / player). even when they’re all colleagues, she addresses them as her superiors and doesn’t feel like she’s on their level.

she is very affection-starved. give her a hug and she won’t know what to do, or she’ll hug you back very tightly. someone pls love this poor girl. 

she has no idea what to do with compliments either. 

not many people have called her sayuri in her life, so it will surprise her to even hear her given name from someone’s lips. 

deep down, she’s sleepy and depressed. but she easily hides it under the happy-go-lucky teacher façade.

she knows that one day she will not get a hero’s song or any literature about her. she’ll fade away just like her dead parents.
