I'm hitting nails with my hammer, and then someone comes up to me and tells me I'm not really hitting nails because "when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" even though I am hitting nails, as if the hypothetical possibility that I might be mistaken somehow means that I should abandon all hammering, despite the fact that I am hitting nails.
I know what a nail looks like.
I know what things that aren't nails look like.
If you think that I shouldn't hit anything with my hammer because you don't know if the things I was hitting were nails, that means you don't know what a nail looks like.
This is about how some people try to deny dess knight btw.
The point of this rant is that I saw a bad take in a YouTube comment and had to vent (I know it's stupid to rant on Tumblr about an upsetting YouTube comment, but the alternative would be to argue with them in said comments and that's worse). They said "Dess knight is basically this: 'when you have a bat, everything looks like a ball'" and it pissed me off so much.
I'm not going to pretend I'm objectively right about an element of the story that has not been confirmed yet, and chapter five did throw a few more hurdles my way about it that I haven't fully reconciled yet. But I do know the evidence for this theory is valid, and acting like I'm jumping at shadows just because the "How long did it take her to smile" response said not everything in the world is related to dess is massively twisting the point. "When you have a bat, everything looks like a ball" in the context of an ARG about the chapter 5 portion of the weird route has no bearing on who the knight is, and just feels like you're calling the people who believe in this completely justifiable theory hammer-crazed lunatics who think everything in the world is a nail. It's obviously not that extreme, and I'm sure my absurdly long post about it isn't gonna help the "dess knight theorists are so annoying and self-righteous" opinion that a lot of deniers have in place of actual counterarguments, but god damn I just hate how dismissive it feels.
And frankly I'm now realising that I often act as dismissive towards the theories of others that I consider to be batshit insane, and I should probably reconsider that behaviour, knowing how it feels when it happens to me.
Guess that's a happy resolution, maybe ranting on the internet IS a valid substitute for therapy. I should go have a sandwich or something now.
