the sun inches towards the horizon and he knows, he knows that he should turn the lights out, but he steps to the window and holds his breath instead.

it’s not that he doesn’t take the threat of war seriously; tucked in the back of rory’s mind is the sight of fire raining down from the heavens, the searing heat of nearby buildings — already old then — set ablaze with german fury while he struggled under the weight of an impossibly important box. but tonight, another great war rages inside this old soldier, lost in memories.

leaning his weight against the frame, he watches with furrowed brow as the sun continues its slow earthbound descent. not another night, rory begs. not another dark, dark night, where anything might come take him away.

the knob turns in the door, making him start. turning from the last of the rosy sunset, he says, “ i’ve been having the dreams again. ”
