May The Fourth || Kierdney
Shit. Kieran pulls back and a laugh bubbles from his chest and the welting in his eyes dies down as he fumbles for the ring and he pulls it out of it’s prison. Setting the box aside, Kieran takes the ring and he slides it on her finger. He pulls back enough so he can look at her hand and his smile almost splits his face as he lifts it up and kisses her knuckles. There’s a rucus downstairs and Kieran is sure their “secret” is out before he’s even gotten the chance to fully wrap his head around the fact that she said yes. The room is spinning and his heart is in his throat, but he pulls her close again, this time with one hand on her face and he kisses her. The kiss is still sloppy but it’s there and it’s what he needs to solidify this moment. To seal the deal.
He pulls back for air and he cups her cheek. “What a fantastic birthday gift.” He laughs.
It’s beautiful. And perfect and it fits her finger like-. “You’ve been snooping.” Sydney laughs, admiring the ring until he distracts her with the kiss and she returns the favor eagerly, cupping his jaw to draw him close. There’s excited noises coming from downstairs, so her mother has undoubtably shared the news but Sydney doesn’t really think about any of that until Kieran speaks again.
“I mean, it’s kind of your gift to yourself isn’t it? Wait...Oh God, there’s a party going on downstairs.” She’s laughing again, glancing towards the door. There’s really nothing more that she wanted to do than stay up here and enjoy being in his presence, close like this, but they’re entertaining guests. “We should probably go be good hosts, right?”
May The Fourth || Kierdney
Everything is so silent for far too long and Kieran fears the worst. The noise she makes isn’t something he’s expecting and it shocks him for a moment and then there’s the footsteps and the door is flung open. He’s about to get up and check her vital signs or something but then she’s nodding and saying yes and his ears start to ring and the room starts to spin.
“Yes??” He blurts out and he can’t feel the smile breaking out onto his face before he thinks to do it. Kieran stumbles to his feet and completely forgets to actually put the ring on Sydney’s finger as he pulls her to himself and kisses her lips and then the side of her face and moves back to her lips.
Her mother must leave. Or something. Because there’s a swell of noise from downstairs that Sydney can’t really decipher beyond the volume of it with the way all of the blood is rushing to her ears and face and brain. She doesn’t even notice that Kieran hasn’t put the ring on her yet until she goes to hug him back, to kiss him back and her hand brushes the velvet box in his hand.
“Are you going to put it on me?” She laughs through her tears, pulling back enough to give him access to her left hand.
May The Fourth || Kierdney
This feels so foreign to Kieran. The stumbling over his words and the nerves pumping through him like an IV. He swallows and he reaches for one of her hands and smiles again. “No Sydney, you.. you don’t understand what this means to me. I know it’s simple. I should have my family with me and you were able to work it out, but I’m still so grateful for it and for you.” His eyes dart to the door for a moment and he decides it’s time, so he takes both of her hands and a deep breath.
“I was just finishing up class a few weeks ago when I got a message from you telling me you were thinking of me and that you loved me and I hadn’t even done anything to instigate the text. It was just because you were thinking about me and you loved me that you decided to just tell me. And I instantly felt this rush of love for you and I feel that a lot but it was different this time. I don’t know how to explain it but it was.
I realized what I already knew before and that’s that you are my person and it’s rare to find that these days. People date and they get married and they’re in love but they aren’t their person, so they fall apart or they live in a dull marriage. But nothing is ever dull with you, Sydney. It doesn’t matter how long we’ve been together or how short we’ve been together. What matters is that this is what I need and I need you.”
Kieran pulls one sweaty hand away and he swallows, his throat dry, and he digs in his pocket hastily. Pulling out the box, Kieran dips down on one knee before Sydney has a chance to say anything. Maybe if she just sees the ring she’ll say yes. Opening the box, Kieran looks up at her and asks. “Will you marry me?”
The thing is, Sydney’s used to this kind of talk from him. Kieran is always eloquent, always openly romantic and sweet and loving. Of course he would pull her aside to wax poetic about how much he loves her and how grateful he is for this party that he more than deserves.
But this is different. And she’s so busy listening to him speak, trying to figure out why this is different, why this feels so different that she doesn’t respond, simply lets him go on...and on and on until he’s stepping away, moving and she wonders what it is that missed, where he’s going, what’d he say-.
He’s on a knee. He’s on one knee. Sydney doesn’t realize she’s made a noise until there’s thundering footsteps and her mother opens the door - she must have screamed or made a sound of distress or something but no one makes a noise, even when the door’s opened. But it’s enough to bring her back to earth, to make her swallow a breath, nodding once and then twice and then faster, so fast that the tears blurring her eyes don’t have a hope of staying put. “Yes. Yes, yes, yes.”
May The Fourth || Kierdney
“Would you say no if I scooped you up and romanced you?” Kieran laughs because he hasn’t even thought of that but that would be an out if he decided he needed one now. But he didn’t need one because he was sure about this now. “No, it’s not that. I..” He stops and he fishes for his words. He’s usually always fluent with his romance but right now all the speeches he practiced in their mirror while she was out had escaped him.
“I wanted to tell you how much I appreciated tonight Syd. I can’t believe you brought Erin and Tessa even. I’ll never not be in awe by you.”
“Considering we have a house full of people who’d know exactly what we were doing?” Sydney smirks, settling her hands on her hips. “Yes. I would.” But he’s not scooping her up and romancing her or doing anything otherwise untoward and so honestly? She’s just confused. Especially when he starts floundering for words - he never does.
Blinking, she shrugs before smiling again. “You deserved it, Kier. And you shouldn’t have to be without your family on your birthday. Seriously, don’t mention it.”
May The Fourth || Kierdney
She’s smiling at him and Kieran feels his heart start to pound a little harder but he pushes through and smiles at her. “Can we go somewhere.. quieter?” He slides his hand from her back to the hand not cradling her drink and he knows that he can back out now if he wants to. But he doesn’t want to. He feels the weight of the ring in his pocket as he leads her to their empty bedroom and he flips the lights on.
“Ah yes,” he shuts the door almost completely behind them and he turns back to her with a smile. “Much better.”
“Yeah, course.” Concern flits over her features and she wastes no time following him upstairs. She’d been so sure he was having fun that she hadn’t actually asked him and what if he didn’t what this? If he’s overwhelmed? She doesn’t even ask him to explain until they reach their bedroom and once the door is shut, Sydney raises both eyebrows. He’s smiling.
“Did you bring me up here for a party quickie?”
May The Fourth || Kierdney
It was Kieran’s birthday and Sydney had outdone herself. She promised him a night in after a dinner at their favorite restaurant and instead he came home to confetti canons exploding in his face by not only the friends he’s made at St. Brendan’s but his sisters too. He might have shed a single tear but he was sure he caught it before anybody noticed and if he didn’t well, he’d deny it until the grave.
Speaking of until the grave, Kieran was had been trying to find the right moment for weeks now. He had enlisted Leah’s help in picking out a ring a few weeks back and since then it’s been burning a hole in the box stuffed in a paper bag stuffed in a secret opening in the back of the closet. Excusing himself to the bathroom, Kieran retrieved the box and he opened it to look at it one more time before what he hoped was the last time it would lay in the plastic prison.
Kieran made his way out if the bedroom, box tucked secretly in his pocket and he moved through the small crowd of people to find Sydney again. She was standing by the punch bowl talking as he came up behind her and settled his hand on her back. He leaned down and whispered in her ear. “Can I steal you away for a moment? I’d like to talk to you.”
@heymissfoxxx
It’d taken surprisingly less planning than she expected. The worst part was getting the girls into the states (and having to leave Nan behind, she’d felt so awful about that) and once they landed on the morning of the 4th, they’d jumped right into helping Sydney (along with Leah) plan and execute a perfect party for their brother.
Thankfully, it’d gone off without a hitch. He expected nothing and it’d been a total surprise the way she’d hoped. Even her parents were there (her father mostly indifferently though her mother had insisted).
She’s listening to her mother tell some story she’s not super interested in when Kieran approaches from behind. “Well I can’t tell the birthday boy no, can I?” She smiles up at him before excusing herself, turning to face him fully. “Yes, love?”
Jelly Belly | Kierdney
Kieran smiles and he scoots in closer to Sydney once she’s settled on the couch. One hand rests on her lower back as he eyes what she’s discarding from the bag. Candy. Ah! He should have known. A jelly slathered bean, what in the world was he thinking? Kieran perks up a little as his sweet tooth begins to scream. “Ah, sweets. Why didn’t you say so? I was quite worried you’d be giving me cooking beans drenched in a grape jelly of sorts.” He reached out to pick a bag up and he looked it over before looking at his girlfriend. “Can I open it?”
“If I gave them to you, no matter what they were, I can assure you that they’d be good.” He picks up the bag of Jelly Bellys and she takes it, handing him the generic bag first. “You can open these. You have to go in order. These first, then the Jelly Belly - those are the more sophisticated flavors - and then the Sour Warhead ones. Those are the best ones.”
Jelly Belly | Kierdney
Sydney knows she shouldn’t be this excited, but exposing Kieran to new things is just always fun. After picking up the jelly beans (3 different kinds, he has to learn), she strolls into the house with a smile on her face. “Kier! I’m back!” Joey glances at her lazily when she walks by, lifting his head to bump her palm but laying back down as she heads into the living room.

Not sure what the big fuss was over jelly beans, Kieran decides not to think about it too much once he’s home and scoping out the left over lasagna Sydney promised. He finds it quickly and almost just as quickly devours a piece. Surprised Joey didn’t attack and beg, Kieran untucks his shirt and strips his waist loose of his belt and he lounges on the couch, flipping aimlessly through the television channels. Hearing Sydney arrive, Kieran flicks off the box and he sits up with a smile on his face. “In here, love!”
Sydney wastes no time settling on the couch next to Kieran, brandishing the CVS bag of goodies. “Are you ready to learn about something amazing?” She asks, pecking his cheek before she pulls out the three bags of jelly beans. There’s generic brand, a bag of Jelly Belly brand and a bag of Sour Warhead brand, all to get him accustomed to the wonder that is jelly beans.

What are you doing tonight?
Something with you, if I’m lucky.
@heymissfoxxx
Is this a kind of bean slathered in jelly?
Oh sweetheart, no. We’ll get you educated, I promise.
I’m going to the store after work. There should be leftover lasagna ready to go in the oven.
What are you doing tonight?
Something with you, if I’m lucky.
@heymissfoxxx
YOU’VE NEVER HAD JELLYBEANS?!
That’s what we’re doing tonight.
Have you made plans for your birthday?
I haven’t, no. You’re the only plans I need, really.
@heymissfoxxx
I’d love that. Thank you. You make me feel special.
Oh hush, it’s not even your birthday yet! That’s when you’re supposed to feel special.
Have you made plans for your birthday?
I haven’t, no. You’re the only plans I need, really.

You’re too sweet. But good. I thought a nice, relaxing night in would be nice. Maybe dinner out, if there’s a place you’d love to go.
That sounds wonderful. I’d love to go out to a dinner with you. Perhaps to our favorite Italian restaurant?
Wherever you want, my love. I’ll get us reservations made?
