Snack Attack! || Key to Joy

Mickey had been back for a few days but he didn't really feel like he was back. Not until he checked off a few particular, Swynlake-specific boxes. For example, he needed to take a dip in Atlantic lake, slurp on a Chippamunka milkshake, and have a picnic in the glen with a few of his fairy friends.

He also needed to host another episode of everyone's favorite unaired imaginary TV show: SNACK ATTACK! with Joy and Mickey.

So he reached out. Of course he reached out! And sure didn't think twice about it either, nor about that date stamped on the last text check-in text from Joy. The one he hadn't answered. Or the one before THAT one he also didn't answer. Or the one before that...

Joy would get it. He had just been... busy.

But what better way for two friends to reconnect than over weird, limited-edition snacks?!

"Oi! There she is!" Mickey sprang up from the blanket (spread over a patch of grass in Main Street Park) when he saw Joy arrive. He scampered toward her and opened his arms wide for a hug. "Joybird!! Hey!"

"Hmm... sounds like a hard job especially with the way Swynlake works for newcomers." Kim was still getting used to it and she only knew about the way it worked through experience. She had been late to rehearsals a few times and luckily she hadn't gotten penalised for it by the director.

"I've had an unofficial tour by someone who's lived here but not the official Swynlake tour. I've kind of been winging it in terms of figuring my way around."

"I'm from Middleton which is another small town but you've probably not heard of it."

"No, I know Middleton! I was born in Marceline, Missouri!" exclaimed Mickey-- as if these two towns were close!

They were not.

However, Mickey was a bit of an Americanophile, ever since he was small. He was proud of his American citizenship, even though his parents had abandoned the ol' American dream due to heightened magical racism in Missouri during the Bush era. Still... he loved all the art and music and film that came out from that crazy country. That's why he'd done the LA thing for so long.

Maybe he'd even go back.

"Anyway, Middleton is near...Chicago...? Maybe...?" he questioned.

Marie didn't know how Mickey did it. The whole tour guide thing. Marie absolutely did not have the patience. She wanted to throw her hands up and gesture to the many, many bakeries, cafes and shops around them, all with an excellent selection of snacks and drinks and whatever you could want, really.

Marie ignore the slight twitch in her eye, working hard to keep up her best customer service smile. After all, Mickey hadn't let his slip, so she couldn't either. "Plus, isn't a picnic so much fun in this weather?" She pointed out. "And you don't have to wait for service, it's all just-- right there!"

The woman pursed her lips, humming, still seeming unsure. "I guess..."

"Trust me. You'll love it. In fact, I think you'll manage to spot a few butterbirds! They nest around this time."

"Butterbirds?" Immediately, the American's eyes widened.

Nabbed her!

Mickey grinned. "Oh yeah, they're a species native to Swynlake. They're gorgeous, look a bit like hummingbirds, but they have these wings more similar to butterflies. They're wonderful pollinators! And they basically paint the air with rainbows, so the park is just the most beautiful place to go--"

"That sounds amazing!" exclaimed the woman.

"Yeah, they're one of a kind. Hard to capture on camera, they just flap their wings too fast. But you could try!"

The woman grabbed her friend's arm. "Let's go see if we can find them!" They sped off-- Mickey opening his mouth to call after them but they were just too darn fast.

"Huh. They are going in the opposite direction of the park." A beat. "Oh well!" He smiled at Marie. "You are now free."

"Oh, I love aimless wandering time," said Mickey, grinning. "What you got coming up later? Meeting someone? Oh, maybe a date...?" He raised his eyebrows.

"Flattered that you think my romantic life is anything to speak of, I'll have to tell my friend that later, real knee-slapper," Milori said all of this with a grin though, not a hint of actually being down about it.

He wasn't, truly.

As a royal talent it was actually more expected he never really settle down and properly fall in love so the times he did fall in love in his life, he considered himself lucky to have had the luxury.

"No, just meeting a friend in town once he's off work. I just finished helping bring some fairy kids to their summer activities, now I've got about 90 minutes to kill."

"Oh, the ones at Town Hall? I loved those activities as a kid," said Mickey, smiling fondly.

He had participated in as much as he could-- as much Walter and Lilian could pay for! His favourites had been the week-long Make-Your-Own-Comics day camp and, duh, anything that had to do with comedy, improv, or performance! Hard to even choose a favourite of that. Maybe Mime? Mickey firmly believed he'd been a mime in a past life.

"Oh... yeah that." Her mom had text her about making sure she had everything set for starting at Pride University in a few weeks. She had tried to tell her that she did but ghe woman wouldn't stop nagging. It seemed to be even worse when she was halfway across the world from her.

"My mom text me but I think I know what you mean. I tried using Google maps when I first got to Swynlake and it kept restarting my phone or freezing it."

"Are you an official tour guide of Swynlake then?"

"You bet. Been one since I was 17. Well-- er, I did leave at 20, I've been in Los Angeles, but now I'm back and ready for Swynlake Tours the Sequel-- 2 Tour 2 Guide."

Mickey gestured down his freshly pressed uniform. Lillian had taken it to the dry cleaners for him, so he'd feel good as new for his first official day of work. Or, er, his second first day of work! Tour Guide the Reprise! (Got to keep workshopping.)

"You ever been on a tour? You're definitely not from here, judging on your accent."

Bullseye was not surprised to hear he looked lost. That had pretty much been his state of being for over a hundred and fifty years, and especially since he had come to town. And while he would admit to sometimes still getting lost around town, at the moment, he was not. He had just been trying to keep out of the sun as much as possible, so that was probably what had given this guy that impression.

"Lost? Oh, no, 'm not. Sorry t' disappoint. Th', uh, sun was jus' gettin' in my eyes. But jus' outta curiosity, what 'zactly are you a professional o'?" He was not quite sure what the fancy outfit signified, though he thought he had seen it around town before.

It was an adorable golden badge. Underneath "Mickey" read the official title: Swynlake Tour Guide.

"My badge of honor," Mickey added, grinning. "So yeah, I bet I could answer just about any question you have about Swynlake. Try me!"

"Really? Oh wow I'm honestly so honored. I know the guys would be too," Taehyun added, positively beaming. "I'm happy to share a dance with a fan." It was kind of the dream wasn't it? People being excited about the album, wanting to see the dances and all. "Okay so it's a little like this..." He stepped back a little his arms out and straight as he did a little head bob and mouthed some of the words and then twisted to the side and wiggled his hips, doing the footwork that he had memorized after so much time and throwing his arms up to go along with it, only to twist back to face Mickey and round off the whole thing with a high kick for a little flair. "Sorta like that," Taehyun demonstrated. "It's cooler with music of course."

Taehyun demonstrated less than an eight-count, but Mickey's jaw dropped anyway. The whole thing was fluid, cool, and sexy. He'd expected something completely different when listening to the song, but not in a bad way or anything. Really, this was better.

"Loved that!" Mickey said, clapping a few times. "You guys have a brill choreographer. Seriously, that-- has viral written all over it." A beat. "Though I thought there might be more twerking."

Taehyun doubted the other guys would be quite as into making Boom Boom the next single, but he could see why it was fun. "I'll tell the guys," Taehyun said with a grin. "We're working on the dances still, finalizing our favorites."

He could only imagine what Aaron Z might say to that. But Taehyun loved having dances for TikToks and all. "But we have dances for a few songs already," Taehyun added. "I could show you a bit of the one for Boom Boom if you want. Sneak peek."

Oh! Taehyun was being recognized for the band!

That was exciting. A smile spread across his face. Not only recognized, but he was meeting a fan? Taehyun hadn't really realized they had many of those yet. "I am! And I'm really glad you loved the album! That's awesome to hear," Taehyun said. It made him feel a bit better about how they were doing.

"Boom Boom is super fun to dance to, so I'm glad it's found it's place as a summer bop," Taehyun added.

Taehyun was... well he was somewhere on main street. Reasonably he should be able to find his way toward the lake for a swim. Except... Taehyun didn't see any signs of the lake. Or anything close to it.

He blinked as someone called out to him. "Oh umm... I am but honestly I'm not sure how much help you can give me," Taehyun admitted with a sheepish smile.

He had to be! Obviously Mickey kept up with the goings-on with Swynlake and followed the band's official channels once those popped onto his feed. How cool that Swynlake was gonna have its own boy band! Mickey had listened to the debut and thought it was brills.

It's just he'd sort of been looking for that KB guy and figured he would be in the park and somehow, he'd gotten completely turned around. A couple times. It didn't help that Marian didn't know he was out here alone...

Not that she needed to know! He was big enough to be on his own!

Mickey had once wandered around Swynlake when he was much, much too young to be wandering around Swynlake too. His parents were quite free range that way. Walter always said that the only way kids learned was to fall down and figure out how to get back up.

No matter what the kid said, though, he was lost. Mickey knew the look.

Getting lost could be fun, though.

"Looking for something, then?" MIckey attempted to fill in the kid's sentence.

Marie shrugged one shoulder, head inclining towards it, as if her good hair was nothing. She was Marie Bonfamille, after all. She always had gorgeous hair.

“Oh, sure!” Marie agreed emphatically. She was becoming a good saleswoman, you know. Never mind that she had never played bowls once in her entire life. “Especially whilst the weather’s this nice. You’ve got to make the most of it.”

The woman did not seem convinced. “We kind of wanted somewhere we could eat as well, y’know? Get some bar snacks or something. I don’t know about bowling in a park with nothing around…”

There really was no pleasing some people.

"Nothing around? Main Street Park is right next to everything!" exclaimed Mickey.

And oh, this really was his specialty. He dealt with all kinds of tourists-- the enthusiastic tourists and the skeptical ones, the elderly who needed accessible options versus families with impatient, easily bored little ones. Mickey loved finding that perfect recommendation.

"If I were you, I'd go to the Moon Market and pick up a charcuterie board, then have yourself a picnic and a round of lawn bowls," said Mickey. "Though you could also stop by for a quick bite at Hatter's, which has lots of outdoor seating."

"Er, sorry! You're looking for a bowling alley," said Mickey, turning toward the lady with a pinched expression on her face. "Marie is right, we do not have a bowling alley. But you can temporarily rent a bowls kit from the Community Center and set it up in Main Street Park! You like bowls?"

"What the hell is bowls?" said the woman in an American accent (Midwest, if Mickey was going to guess.)

"Er, lawn bowling! It's great fun! Don't you think so, Marie?" said Mickey. "In fact, you've got to try it while you're here!"
