Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe at a ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1’ Q&A [November 09, 2010]

Harry: UGH it should be illegal for people to cry in front of me…… Like can they just not??. I get very uncomfortable
also Harry: What if😳😳….. GINNY WEASLEY was weeping at the sight of my lifeless body😣😢😢 whilst telling me how much she wanted my d😍💘❤️🔥and Ron gave us his blessing🙏☺️ and we lived happily ever after👩❤️💋👨👩❤️💋👨👨👩👦👦👨👩👧👦
THIS. IS. CANON. GUYS. TAKE. THAT. IN.
Yes, the thought about Ginny crying over his body is in the books. No one is denying that. But treating that moment as proof of some deep, mature love story is honestly a stretch at best and delusion at worst.
That scene reads like exactly what it is. Teenage drama. A fleeting, self-indulgent thought about being wanted, mourned, desired. Not emotional intimacy. Not mutual understanding. Not support. Just a sixteen-year-old boy imagining what it would feel like to be important to someone in the most dramatic way possible.
And the books make one thing painfully clear. Harry is deeply uncomfortable showing Ginny his real emotions. He hides his fear, his grief, his tears from her. He is relieved when she doesn’t see him cry. He compartmentalizes himself around her. That is not what emotional safety looks like.
What makes this even harder to ignore is that Ginny, canonically, does nothing with Harry’s emotions even when she has the chance. Across all his breakdowns, losses, nightmares, anger, and trauma, she is simply not there. She doesn’t support him. She doesn’t anchor him. She doesn’t carry the weight with him.
That role is consistently Hermione’s.
She is there when he falls apart. She sees his tears. She hears his panic. She absorbs his anger and grief without asking him to be smaller or stronger or more palatable. Harry does not hide from Hermione. He breaks in front of her. Again and again.
So yes, Harry briefly imagines Ginny crying over his body. That says a lot about adolescence, ego, and the desire to be mourned. But what actually matters is who he lets see him alive, terrified, grieving, and human.
And that was never Ginny.
You can call the fantasy canon if you want. But the emotional reality of Harry Potter was written loud and clear.
And it was Hermione.
I partially agree. Ron was his best emotional support. He knew Harry didn’t like his kiss with Cho and didn’t want to date her before Harry really admitted to himself.
Both Hermione and Harry were devastated when Ron left and couldn’t function properly.
But yeah Harry and Ginny’s relationship, when you look in depth, is so shallow…
I get what you’re trying to say, but calling Ron Weasley Harry’s “best emotional support” is… generous.
Ron can be fun. He’s familiar. He’s part of Harry’s life. No one is denying that. But emotional support isn’t about shared jokes.
Ron also abandons him. Twice. Once in fourth year, when Harry is isolated and needs him most. And again during an actual war, while they’re on a mission where failure means death.
That’s not a minor flaw. That’s a pattern.
And yes, Harry and Hermione Granger were devastated when Ron left. Of course they were. Their best friend just walked out on them in the middle of a war. That’s not “proof Ron is the emotional anchor.” That’s proof betrayal hurts.
They struggled because they lost someone they loved and trusted.
Not because Ron was uniquely capable of supporting Harry in ways Hermione couldn’t.
Because if we’re being honest, when Harry actually breaks down — fear, grief, panic — it’s Hermione who is there. Consistently. Not sometimes. Not when it’s easy. Always.
Ron’s dynamic with Harry is mostly built on camaraderie. They joke. They bicker. They act like teenage boys. That’s real, but it’s not the same as emotional grounding.
Hermione is the one who stays when things stop being fun. When it’s cold, dangerous, hopeless. When Harry isn’t “the hero,” just a traumatized kid falling apart.
So yes, Hinny is shallow when you look closely.
But replacing that with “Ron was the real emotional support” doesn’t really hold either.
What I like about these particular moments is how Hermione was the only one who could pull Harry out of a depressed cocoon, and make him really laugh and feel less alone. Not Cho, nor Ginny, but Hermione.
Which eventually saved his soul. Her light, her love and his attachment to her was what helped him push Voldemort out of his body. Yes, there was friendship and family too(Ron, parents) but it was Hermione who was the catalyst that helped push Riddle out of him.
In defense of Harry Potter, because this fandom
I genuinely do not understand this fandom sometimes.
Ron fans will forgive him anything. Abandonment. Jealousy. Rudeness. Betrayal. All of it gets washed away with one single scene of him standing in front of Harry in the Shrieking Shack and suddenly he’s the pinnacle of loyalty, the true hero, the moral compass of the story.
Fine. Whatever.😑
But then the same people turn around and reduce Harry Potter to a brainless emotional support prop who would apparently be a drooling troll without Hermione. And that’s where it stops being opinion and starts being nonsense.
Yes, I love Hermione. I truly do. Reminder I am an hardcore Harmony Stan. And yes, I see her as Harry’s only real partner on every level that actually matters. But the way people defend her by flattening Harry into an incompetent idiot is not pro-Hermione. It’s anti-Harry. And it’s lazy and offensive.
Harry is not academically gifted in the neat, polished way Hermione is. That does not make him stupid.
This is a boy who read his schoolbooks before his first year even started. A boy who was completely absorbed by the Half-Blood Prince’s textbook because he understood it intuitively. A boy who figured out that Hagrid’s dragon didn’t appear “by accident.” A boy who stabbed a diary with a basilisk fang on instinct and destroyed a Horcrux at twelve. TWELVE! But sure, tell me again how he’s “useless.”
He navigated the Triwizard Tournament under constant threat of death. He oriented himself in tasks designed to kill him. He taught other students DADA because he understood it well enough to explain it, adapt it, and make others better. He planned and executed a break-in at Gringotts, one of the most secure places in the wizarding world.
But sure. No brain activity detected.😡😡😡
And don’t even get me started on the “Harry is useless except for Expelliarmus” crowd. That take alone tells me people skimmed the books with their eyes closed.
This is the same thirteen-year-old who drove off an entire swarm of Dementors with a fully formed Patronus. One of the most advanced defensive spells in existence. And then later taught it to others. Successfully.
This is the same fourteen-year-old who dueled Voldemort and survived.
Expelliarmus is not a lack of imagination. It is a statement of intent. Harry is not trying to kill Voldemort. He is trying to protect Hogwarts. To protect people. To stop the cycle, not continue it. If you think that makes him weak, then congratulations, you completely missed the point of his character.
And the claim that Harry is a doormat, a weak person everyone walks over, is honestly the most unhinged of all.
This boy lost his parents, his godfather, his childhood, his sense of safety, his privacy, his autonomy. He was abused, isolated, manipulated, lied to. And still, he did not turn bitter. He did not become cruel. He did not decide the world owed him blood.
That takes more strength than most people will ever have.
Every single keyboard critic who calls Harry weak would break within days if they lived even a fraction of his life. It takes immense inner power to continue seeing good in people after everything he endured. To forgive those who didn’t deserve it. Yes, even Albus. Yes, even Ron.
And finally, the thing people seem most desperate to downplay. Harry walking into the forest. Alone. Knowing he would die. Letting Voldemort kill him so others could live.
That is not weakness! That is not stupidity! That is not passivity!
That is strength in its purest form.
If you don’t understand that, you don’t understand Harry Potter.
If you thought that Hermione was the only one who was obsessed with Harry’s safety, then I will remind you that Harry is no better in this too.
1. He was first, who recall, that Hermione don`t know about troll and was absent on dinner.
2. He sent her upstairs so that she would not be caught by the hand of Voldemort and stay safe.
3. She was the reason why Harry became active in the attacks on muggleborns investigation and went to question Hagrid and Aragog.
4. Sorry, Remus, but that girl you get only over my dead body.(c) Harry
5. When protecting Hermione became his second nature.
6. " She`s my friend too! "
7. Sorry, Cormac, you shouldn’t have told Harry such things about Hermione. 🤣
8. For Hermione? Anything from plotting an escape plan in a second to surrendering if it means she will be safe.
9. And just Harry, who runs first to make sure that Hermione is all right.

Harry canonically only shows his vulnerable side to Hermione.
Let's check it out.
Disclaimer: please do not use this post to send hate to any ships. I am only analyzing canon and providing the evidence, I do not intend to send hate to any pairing with Harry (especially Harry/Ginny).
Harry is at his most vulnerable when he's crying. He usually holds back tears and tries not to show his vulnerability. He gets defensive whenever someone mentions crying:
Harry was feeling really annoyed now. How on earth was he to know how his parents would feel if they were alive? He could feel Rita Skeeter watching him very intently. Frowning, he avoided her gaze and looked down at words the quill had just written:
Tears fill those startlingly green eyes as our conversation turns to the parents he can barely remember.
“I have NOT got tears in my eyes!” said Harry loudly.
Harry's very upset when Rita says he cries about his parents. He can't stand the idea of being weak and vulnerable.
Harry barely ever cries in canon. He cries to himself after Sirius's death but makes sure to hide from everyone so he doesn't show his tears:
He walked a short way around the lake, sat down on its bank, sheltered from the gaze of passersby behind a tangle of shrubs, and stared out over the gleaming water, thinking. . . .
[...]
He sat there for a long time, gazing out at the water, trying not to think about his godfather or to remember that it was directly across from here, on the opposite bank, that Sirius had collapsed trying to fend off a hundred dementors. . . .
The sun had fallen before he realized that he was cold. He got up and returned to the castle, wiping his face on his sleeve as he went.
But there two other occasions when Harry cries in public and the way Harry acts interests me.
With Ginny:
Firstly, Dumbledore's funeral. Harry is in public and he can't stop his tears anymore. Who is he with? Ginny. Let's see how he acts:
And then, without warning, it swept over him, the dreadful truth, more completely and undeniably than it had until now. Dumbledore was dead, gone. . . . He clutched the cold locket in his hand so tightly that it hurt, but he could not prevent hot tears spilling from his eyes: He looked away from Ginny and the others and stared out over the lake, toward the forest, as the little man in black droned on. . . .
Fairly, Harry is with everyone else at the funeral, not just Ginny, so you could argue that's why Harry turns away, but he specifically singles her out which implies that he doesn't want Ginny to see his tears. Harry makes sure that we know he turns away from her specifically by using the wording "Ginny and the others" to separate Ginny from the rest and almost highlight her.
Either way, Harry turns away from Ginny and hides his vulnerability from her.
With Hermione:
Secondly, we have one of the most powerful scenes in the series — the Godric's Hollow Graveyard scene. Harry cries while standing in front of his parents' grave. Who is he with? Hermione. Let's see how he acts:
But they were not living, thought Harry: They were gone. The empty words could not disguise the fact that his parents’ moldering remains lay beneath snow and stone, indifferent, unknowing. And tears came before he could stop them, boiling hot then instantly freezing on his face, and what was the point in wiping them off or pretending? He let them fall, his lips pressed hard together, looking down at the thick snow hiding from his eyes the place where the last of Lily and James lay, bones now, surely, or dust, not knowing or caring that their living son stood so near, his heart still beating, alive because of their sacrifice and close to wishing, at this moment, that he was sleeping under the snow with them.
This is the first time that Harry cried openly and freely, fully able to accept his emotions and vulnerabilities. In a way, he opened up to Hermione, he let someone see his tears for the first time. And that someone was none other than Hermione. Harry never showed his tears to anyone, not even to Ginny. The only person who got to see him at his most vulnerable was Hermione. And it's important to see how she reacts. This is the following moment:
Hermione had taken his hand again and was gripping it tightly. He could not look at her, but returned the pressure, now taking deep, sharp gulps of the night air, trying to steady himself, trying to regain control.
Hermione noticed Harry's tears and tightly gripped his hand. She comforted him and helped him regain control. And no words were said. None were necessary. She understood him and stood by him when he was vulnerable. And no one could ever replace that.
A bit of this is also discussed in one of my essays, here is the link if you're interested.
Ironically enough, Rowling is much better at writing love when she's not trying to describe it. However, the whole book is imbued with this comfort, care and acceptance. Even if they don't admit it, their actions speak much louder. This is exactly the kind of girl Harry needs, with whom he can be himself, with whom he doesn't have to worry about his emotions. he feels comfortable with Hermione.
xbitchesloveharmony:
hpstuffs:
I think one of the biggest differences between H/G and H/Hr is that while Ginny is like: ‘Okay, Harry. I understand. You need to save the world, and I know how important it is. I know you’ll win, and I’ll be here waiting for you, as always.’ Hermione is like: ‘Okay, Harry. I understand. You need to save the world, and I know how important it is. I know you’ll win, and I’ll go with you, as always.’
OMFG MY FUCKING PERFECT OTP.
This is one of the reasons why I will always choose Harmony over any other ship
