Clara had been standing outside, trying to look approachable, and failing miserably. She was trying to enjoy herself, but the social anxiety throbbing in her chest was limiting her. She ended up up against a wall with her arms crossed tightly across her chest. A waiter walked by and she grabbed a glass of champagne off of his tray and took a sip, hoping the sweet, bubbly liquid would calm her nerves.
Everyone in the backyard had taken up to groping and kissing in ways that made Clara sure that's not where it would stop for them tonight. She sort of wished she'd had a date, she couldn't remember the last time she'd been kissed like that. But also, she was glad she wouldn't feel the obligation to be that flamboyant in front of so many people. All in all she felt pretty neutral about dating. She was content with Lucy and Tyler, and didn't need anyone else to make her happy, but it could be nice at some point in her life.Â
The thought hit her without warning, what if some of the people here are dead? What if those people, kissing and touching and holding hands and...other things, were doing so with a dead person? What if they didn't even know? The things Claudia had told her swelled up in her brain, and Clara put her index fingers to her temples. 90% sure the people I knew were living, 10% chance dead people can make themselves seen to me. Clara took deep soothing breathes and looked out into the night, ignoring the feeling of dread deep in her stomach.
Someone walking outside caught her eye, not because he was walking outside, lots of people were doing that, but he was alone. She was the only one she'd seen by herself so far, but there was was all by himself as well. This was her chance, to do as Lucy said, make friends, be bold, have a real life for once. Clara started walking.
The closer she got to him, the more she realized how angry he looked. Too late now, he's seen you she thought to herself. She walked up to him and looked him square in the face. Before thinking about it, she stuck out her hand and said, "Hello, you look very angry. I don't think it's right for one to be angry at a party. Would you like to talk about it?" No one could tell who she was, she could say whatever she wanted, Clara reminded herself. No need to feel embarrassed.
