Henry Grimes, RIP

Bassist Henry Grimes, whose career spanned a half century amid two bursts of astonishing musical fertility, succumbed to complications of COVID-19 on April 15, at age 84. Henry Grimes first came to prominence in the late 1950s, playing with Sonny Rollins and on recordings of Roy Haynes and Gil Evans, on the way to becoming a pillar of the avant-garde with the likes of Albert Ayler, Cecil Taylor and Steve Lacy. Then, in the late 1960s, he vanished from the scene for over three decades, only to reemerge in a return to eminence in the early 2000’s, including collaborations with Marc Ribot, Bill Dixon and Andrew Cyrille.
