okay so a few years ago I read unseen academicals, right? I liked nutt. I liked Glenda. It was like my fifth discworld book I think? Good stuff. Ridcully was hilarious.

But i have a good memory for little details, right? So time passes. I read more discworld books. Mostly out of order but discworld is nice like that, it doesn't affect me much. And. And then, I read Carpe Jugulum.

It's a good book. It's fun. The new Agnes and general lancre antics and the soggy priest. But as I progress through the pages, I keep getting this niggling feeling in the back of my mind, this creeping sense of deja vu. I can't quite pin it down, but it's always there, like an echo of a rung bell. Hey, I've read this before.

And I just can't figure it out. Until. Until the scene at the end, where the priest says that we make our own holy symbols. And then it clicks: the axe.

Pastor Oats. PASTOR OATS. PASTOR FUCKING OATS.

That! Guy! Nutt's mentor!!! and he's been STARING ME IN THE FACE this WHOLE time and i didn't realise!!!!! Pastor Oats with his fucking axe and holy fucking shit I am SO enraged. What the fuck. I'm screaming internally and rocking back and forth because i didn't even REALISE until the end!!

Terry. Terry what the fuck. Why does he do this. It's infuriating. It's amazing. Can I not go one book without this sense of dawning realisation hammering into my brain? If not a pun it's some fucking character popping out of the woodwork to hit me over the head with a clown mallet. And I KNOW the order is the other way around but this genuinely blindsided me and I still haven't recovered

Yesss, you can def read most books standalone, but when that continuity hits, it hits.

Also the "new puns on a re-read" thing is even better if English is your second language and you re-read the same book at different points of fluency.

Thank you anon! I think the two most important things are:

a) he almost always has way more information about any given situation than other characters

b) he absolutely loves not sharing any of it with anyone, including the reader, it's his favorite activity

So whenever he's in a scene with a chronic information-relayer like Vimes or Lipwig you end up writing this extra layer of an only-vaguely-implied not-really-POV of someone who's experiencing a separate version of (honestly mostly self-inflicted) events that's super fun to read when Pterry does it and also super fun to try to write.

ok, imagine Ghazghkull's Great Waagh but everyone is a muppet EXCEPT Commissar Yarrick. His power klaw covered in felt and surrounded by dopey muppet guardsmen while the Orkz would flail their arms around like kermit when they waaagh'd

God the klaw being felt is such a galaxy brain idea, it makes perfect sense cause he got it from a muppet.

Terry Pratchett Small Gods: Okay, it's totally not the point of the book but I couldn't help but wondering on my recent read-through: what do you think would/could have happened in the other trouser of time if Brutha had listened to Om when he demanded he push Vorbis off the boat right at the beginning?

The super boring answer is that it wouldn't be a book then, like in real life it would end up as a net positive, but if you're in a story where societal change comes from a hero's journey and strong antagonists and stuff like that, you gotta keep those going for a bit.

I guess Om would return to godhood and the cult would maybe change a little bit until the next Vorbis comes around and the writer's ceaseless eye would never focus on the time period to describe it.

re: feet of clay, night watch etc. maybe hot take but night watch requires enough prior knowledge of discworld to get the gut punch that i think it makes sense for something else to be a favorite (i feel similarly about some of the later witches books tbh). like i don't know if you're supposed to say night watch or no but i think night watch hits more the more youre into discworld.

feet of clay and jingo are my two fav city watch books though so i'm totally totally biased admittedly. (i think my own actual favorite is witches abroad so make of that what you will.)

No that's exactly it, it's so much of a dramatic peak of the series, it's hard to consider it its own book.

imagine ghazghkull thraka trying to write a letter. he'd have to either write it really big on paper the size of a blanket or write it really small while trying to hold a tiny pen in his giant fingers.

I feel like Makari considers himself a bit of an artiste/warlord historian, so can see him being the size appropriate scribe when the situation calls for it.

Throughout his career Terry mentioned ideas and teased titles for potential stories and novels mainly in the Discworld series:

Raising Taxes - A possible story featuring Moist von Lipwig reforming Ankh-Morpork's tax system.

Scouting for Trolls - A story about the formation of a scouting society in Ankh-Morpork, first hinted at in the short story The Minutes of the Meeting To Form The Proposed Ankh-Morpork Federation of Scouts.

Running Water - Another potential story with Moist von Lipwig concerning him and the logging industry.

At the end of the book The Shepherd's Crown there is an afterword by Rob Wilkins where he mentions several unfinished works:

Twilight Canyons - A story about old folk solving a mystery about treasure and preventing the rise of a Dark Lord.

The Dark Incontinent - Mentions the crystal cave and carnivorous plants. (Presumably similar to "The Last Continent" except it takes place in Howondaland)

A "whodunnit" among the goblins featuring Constable Feeney.

A second story starring Maurice as a ships cat.

God I'm super sad we never got more industrial revolution stuff, I was especially looking forward to the sewage system/possible subway(??) rework book that was kinda hinted by characters a couple of times, interesting that it never got a more official "future book" status. Would love to have more worldbuilding shorts like these and I'm always a big fan pterry's "young adult" books, he goes super dark with those.

I think dark incontinent could've stayed further in the drafts tho.

It'd def a race between Orikan&Trazyn and I think Orikan might just win out in the end. He's such an intense little freak with such a clear POV.

I read TDK and it was such a claustrophobic fever dream, but tbh I think that was the intended and beautifully crafted experience.

you're supposed to (and probably should) say Night Watch, but I have such a soft spot for Feet of Clay, it's such a good mix of mystery/worldbulding and manages to balance fucked up raw moments with humor better than watch books before it imo

I still had to come up with most of the names and almost all designs, drawing from the bio of Jean and what i understand of him, hope you enjoy it ! (there are still a lot of art and movie posters references btw)
