Would you ever consider making a tutorial on how to make theme backgrounds? Or post some tips maybe?
gosh, of course. thereās no need to consider it. if someone wants me to show them how i do something, i get on it right away.
there are two ways, essentially, to make a background (that iām aware of!)
first is arguably the simplest, though iām afraid that since i have no blogs that i can use to show this (because changing themes and putting back in tweaks and meta alterations [a.k.a the colour and other options on your customise page] is a pain in the ass) i canāt do screenshots of it but not to worry. itās literally two steps and not to mention, to change the image, all you need to do is replace the current image link, so thereās no need to do what you have to do in option two and open the psd back up, put in a new image, fit it into the background, make it work with all else, etc.
i. get a background. any. can be a picture or just a flat colour. your choice. though, for these kinds of backgrounds, flat colours work best if you want an image thatāllĀ āfade into the backgroundā (look like itās a part of it).
ii. get an image. for best results, youāll want one with a transparent background or one with a flat colour background which can easily be changed in two clicks in any art program, even paint, with the fill tool. if you really like an image but it doesnāt have either, no worries, as you can use a selection tool (magic wand only seems to work well on images with very flat colours, by the way, so quick selection is your best option) or magic eraser to remove the backgroundor use the feather tool* in photoshop to cut out the image or make the corners fade, making the image fit more cleanly into the background.

iv. change bottom and right margins as desired, to move the image around on your blog.
i. again, get a background. doesnāt have to be a flat colour but i find they work best, especially if you like to use lots of textures, patterns, colouring and image overlays like me.
ii. if you donāt have a folder in your photoshop presets full of all sorts of goodies, like this, no worries.
also, iād be willing to zip up my folder and host it somewhere for downloading if anyoneād like that. itās composed ofĀ āmainā texture packs and overlays and random images iāve saved here and there.
Ā just search on tumblr and on photoshop blogs things likeĀ āphotoshop textures/texture packs/packsā, etc (downloading packs over single images is advised, for obvious reasons) or make a habit of saving random images you come across that you like and placing them into that goodie folder, even if you canāt see yourself using them right away. you never know when youāll want to use something.
iii. open up a new file on photoshop, with the canvas set as your screen resolution. use the paint fill tool to change it to whatever colour you want or open up the background image you want and place it into the file, using free transform to make it the size of the background.
iv. keep in mind what your desired theme looks like. itās quite helpful to take a screenshot of it, open that up, and create a shape over the container or the span of the posts (a.k.a uncontained ones, so youād have a rectangle from the top of the theme to bottom, wide enough to cover the posts). delete the screenshot but keep the shape, should you need to remember where the posts are to work around them.Ā
only delete the shape once youāve decided on what you want your container/posts backdrop to look like, if youāre not making the shape itself the backdrop (if that makes any sense at all). think a container in a container, basically, such as what iām using on my theme with the removed container borders (which, by the way, makes it look a lot cleaner if you are going for a container for your container. you just change the border to 0px in your containerās div section in your html. easy!).
v. grab the image you want to use and open it up. cut it out if itās not already transparent or change the background colour of it if itās a flat colour, like previously stated. select it, copy it, and paste it onto your background file. move it around until you find a nice little place where you want it to go.
vi. slap on whatever overlays you want from your goodie folder. change the layer style to your liking.
vii. whenever you feel like youāre done (which, for me, is right away because i am a grumpy little man who gets frustrated and impatient easilyā), save it (save both the image AND the psd!!! so if you ever need to change or fix anything, you donāt have to start over).
viii. go to your blog customisation, upload the image as your background, and move around your posts/container to fit into the place on your background for them/it. if you donāt quite hit the mark in terms of size, you can easily just make the backgroundās container layers bigger or smaller using free transform until theyāre the right size for your posts/container. aaand youāre pretty much done now.
