The Chemistry of Autumn
I don’t want to lose you because I did something stupid.
… but when I’m with Charlie, I don’t want the day to end…
just nick and charlie living their best life
Nick Nelson being Very Normal about his friend.
I never thought this would happen to me. Me neither.
I've always loved this part of the scene because it's sunny and bright and warm, and also emotional and private compared to the jubilant 'we're boyfriends!' exclamation that follows.
But I also appreciate that this moment is a bit reflective and tinged with sadness for what could have been.
For Nick, I think in this moment he's thinking that if things had gone differently, had he not befriended and fallen for Charlie, had his world not been turned upside down in the best possible way and allowed him to discover his true self, he might not have had this with Charlie.
But for Charlie -- sweet, loving, 15-year old Charlie, who at the beginning of the episode thought the world might be a better place without him in it -- I think that up until this moment, he truly believed that he wouldn't ever have this. Not with Nick, or anyone else.
It's such a sad prospect I can barely stand to think about it. Which makes the fact that they have found each other, that they do have this now and can acknowledge and appreciate it in this quiet, intimate moment, so much more beautiful.

nick nelson + being worried about charlie
Charlie takes Nick's hand at the arcade
Do you ever obsess over think about Charlie casually reaching out for Nick's hand at the entrance to the arcade before leading him over to the bowling lanes to meet his friends? It seems like such a reflexive move for Charlie, and one almost meant to reassure Nick, but there wasn't much tension between them leading up to this. Or maybe Charlie is reassuring himself here, and he just wants to touch Nick to ground himself for a second. It's hard to say. Nick just watches Charlie take his hand (and give it a little squeeze?) but otherwise seems completely unphased by it. I can't help but wonder what they're thinking. The moment is over by the time they turn around and it's such a tiny thing, but sweet and lovely all the same.
I want to kiss you so bad right now.
Okay…
You don’t have to…
I want to.
