Hugh helped his wife get their children situated at their assigned table before assuming his own seat across from her, stuck between Gantry and London. Then he listened to the tension in the room build to a nearly unbearable buzz while he pretended to be interested in the three options for a main course offered on the curated menu.
Chicken - in a lemon butter sauce. Every planet had chicken, somehow. Hugh wondered how the species had managed to win that evolutionary lottery.
"Did you hear about the eldest Stren daughter?" London was leaning around Hugh, trying to engage Gantry in conversation like there was no one between them.
Hugh shuffled his seat back an inch and returned his attention to the menu for a moment before Mattheo drew his attention. "Daddy, what's Ungula Stew?"
"Type of cow, I think," he floundered to remember the word Matt would recognize. "Like - beef."
Mattheo's lips made an 'O' and he returned to bothering his sister by flapping the cardstock menu at her face.
"Eloped with the youngest son of the Hayasir family?" Gantry responded to London's leading question. "Thought they wanted that alliance anyway."
"Sure," London said, trying to one-up Niall's information, "Before someone - they think it was Marietta Stren herself - caught the senior Hayasir at Centauri Hale with twelve of the family waitstaff."
Niall snorted. "Everyone has their mistresses. Or otherwise."
"Really, Niall?" Reyes joined the conversation from the other side of Gantry's chair, disapproving.
"What? If you knew how much money we spend on shuttling people's... side hustles around the galaxy - "
"I'm not saying it doesn't happen," Reyes interrupted, "But do you have to talk about it at dinner?"
There was also some type of vegetable medley on the menu, Hugh noted. Given his experience with the SDHQ kitchen staff's skills, he doubted it would be either appetizing or filling.
"What, do you expect us not to talk about the biggest marital disaster of the year?" London guffawed.
"Who's the disaster - the Stren child or the Hayasir patriarch?"
"Either. Both." London clinked a knife against his glass in mock celebration. "It's all part of the same drama."
Hugh decided he would stick with the chicken. Adri was conferring with her two younger siblings, trying to consolidate the family orders before the waiter arrived.
Theodora was pointedly not looking at either Niall or Tarik, as if she could shut their conversation out of her sphere of awareness by sheer force of will.
"It's hardly even drama anymore," Reyes sighed, "It's just the same thing every year - whose son is marrying whose daughter, who got caught with some Zaim's adopted prodigy instead of her own betrothed, and so on and so forth."
"Come on, Liana," Niall smirked, "You can't tell me you don't get any enjoyment out of hearing the who's who of borrowed shuttles and mistaken beds."
"Even if it was someone at this table?"
"What are you talking about, Niall?"
Hugh felt an elbow in his side and almost jumped out of his chair, concentration on the menu broken. "What - "
Gantry was leaning back toward Reyes with a stage whisper of "I'll give you two guesses, and it's someone sitting next to me" when the waiter materialized over Hugh's shoulder.
Reyes was leaning around to look at him, and he felt the attention of the entire table coalesce on him.
"For you, sir?" The waiter spoke, oblivious.
Hugh cleared his throat, his eyes caught on Theodora's slightly bemused expression.
"I am...having an affair," he said, in a rush.
The conversation stopped.
"I'll have the affair as well," Theodora said, cheerfully, handing her menu across the table to the waiter.
"Sir?" The waiter looked for an explanation from the rest of the table but found none.
"Daddy, what's an affair?" Emmie this time, high pitched and unconcerned.
"It's a....it's a, uh...." Hugh floundered.
"Type of party," Theodora finished for him.
Adri stared between her parents, unsure what to make of their seeming unconcern at this revelation.
With a rush of noise returning, the waiter seemed to recover himself. "I take it you all need an extra minute to decide, then," and he scurried off.
