A knock brought you out from an absurd dream: in it, the key bracelets you had bought from the antique shop ended up being the Keys of the Underworld, which held unspeakable power that had never been gifted to humans before. The wildest part was that an actual Death God, a jackal-headed dude named Kyungsoo, came from the Underworld to collect your soul and the Keys. At first, he’d been scary. Then he ended up just being a huge ass.

“Thank God that’s over,” you groaned into your pillow, damp from a line of drool.

When you cracked open your eyes to face the morning light, the jackal head was hovering over you, luminous eyes scrunched in focus.

“Damn it,” hissed Kyungsoo. “I thought you were dead.”

You rolled off the bed, screaming.

Have you heard of the tales of something extraordinary on the island bordering Ansan? The foaming sea carries out whispers of mermaid encounters. In your Summer sojourn, your journey for a glimpse of shimmering scales whisk you to Daebudo. There you meet marine biologist, Byun Baekhyun, and enlist his aid for discovering the fabled water nymph. A first encounter deems words are not necessary (and you quickly learn how to sign the necessities such as ‘hello’ and ‘sea’ and ‘mermaid tail’). You can’t tell if he’s a skeptic, but he gladly offers his expertise. You converse via sign language, pictographs, body language, and a speech-to-text app. You hit it off well throughout your research, and you begin to think he likes you. He dives for clams, leaves cute whale doodles in your notebook, and treats you to patbingsu. Once, he breached the shore with a pearl between his fingertips. He excitedly grabbed your hand and put the tiny treasure into your palm, curling your fingers over into a fist. You will never forget his smile, crescent eyes shining with adoration so profound you thought he was going to propose. Maybe, you like him too. One nightfall you catch him standing on the seashore, eyes glossy with tears; a longing in his eyes. He had gazed upon the vast and endless blue with a wistful look—like he was missing home.
