sry i never noticed this q. this answer is partly c&p from a 2010 post on my now defunct fashion blog, because im lazy. sry bout it.
i think the core of what i like about theysken’s design aesthetic is the blending and the balance of hard and soft, as well as the ability to design intelligent and nuanced collections. very few designers possess the ability to reinvent labels and design compelling collections while staying simultaneously true to themselves and the original. i think it sucks that he hasn’t been given the opportunity to design for a longer period of time at a fashion house with existing history since he left nina ricci in 09. but i am a fan of his work when he’s allowed to design clothes for creative exploration, not commercial viability.
basically, i love how theyskens used nina ricci’s inconsistent 21st century identity to design collections that acknowledged the possible conflicts between ethereal softness and modernity, dark fantasy and unexpected femininity, futurism and nostalgia. i think he is incredibly skilled at creating clothes that are in conversation with both the framework he is designing in and his own body of work. i guess i just like fashion that makes me think about context not customer
