…and they lived happily ever after! Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
On May 19th, 2018 Prince Harry married American actress Meghan Markle in a public ceremony at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor. Prior to the wedding the Queen announced that Prince Harry would be granted the titles the Duke of Sussex, the Earl of Dumbarton, and Baron Kilkeel and upon their marriage Meghan would be known as ‘Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex’. It had previously been announced that Prince Harry’s brother, Prince William, would stand as his best man along with his nephew and niece, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, would be a part of the bridal party. Days before the wedding Meghan announced that her father would not be attending the wedding, as he was previously announced to do so, and instead her soon to be father in law the Prince of Wales would join her down the aisle. Approximately 250 members of the British Armed Forces were involved in the wedding, the majority coming from units that have a connection with Prince Harry.
Both Prince Harry and Prince William wore full dress uniform of the Blues and Royals. Prince Harry wore the star of the Royal Victorian Order, of which he is a Knight Commander, along with the ribbons of the Royal Victorian Order, Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan, Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and Army Air Corps wings. He also had to ask for the Queen’s permission to keep his beard, as beards are only permitted under exceptional circumstances in the British Army
Meghan Markle wore a bespoke wedding gown designed by Givenchy’s Clare Waight Keller. The ivory silk dress was modern and feminine, with a shoulder-framing bateau neckline, simple A-line silhouette, and slim three-quarter sleeves. The train was short, stopping well before the 16.5-foot silk tulle veil, which was was hand-embroidered with flora representing the 53 countries of the Commonwealth.
The wedding took place at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor precisely at noon. The British Royal Family was in attendance, including the Queen’s cousins and the Duke of Edinburgh who was recovering from an operation, the Spencer family, along with close friends of the couple, celebrities including the cast of ‘Suits’, Idris Elba, Oprah Winfrey, Priyanka Chopra, Carey Mulligan, James Corden, Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian, David and Victoria Beckham, Elton John, James Blunt, and Joss Stone. Many of whom are personal friends of Prince Harry and or Meghan. Approximately 1,200 members of the public were invited to greet the couple outside the chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle. The invitees outside the chapel were “people from charities, Windsor Castle community members, people from the royal households and the Crown Estate, and local school children.”
Prince Harry’s aunt, Baroness Fellowes, sister of his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales, delivered a reading. The sermon was delivered by The Most Reverend Michael Curry, whose sermon ‘emphasized the redemptive property of love’. Two choirs, an orchestra and fanfare trumpeters provided music for the service. In the marriage vows, the couple promised to “to love and to cherish” each other. This was sealed by the exchange of rings, which Prince Harry has chosen to wear in a break with royal tradition.
After the signing of the registers the couple paused briefly to bow and curtsey to the Queen before walking down the aisle. They shared a kiss outside the chapel on the steps before partaking in a carriage procession through Windsor.
Two receptions were held, the first, for those attending the ceremony, was hosted by the Queen and took place in St George’s Hall after the carriage procession in which singer Elton John performed for the guests and the groom and the Prince of Wales each gave a speech. The second and more intimate reception took place at Frogmore House and was hosted by the Prince of Wales. The new Duke and Duchess of Sussex drove to the reception in a silver blue Jaguar E-Type Concept Zero. The Duchess of Sussex wore a halter-neck dress by Stella McCartney for the evening reception.
