An indescribable amount of love for my Maa Durga resides deep within my inner being. For one moment, I stood stock-still, drinking in the simple beauty of the silver lined fountain, the base of its pedestal wreathed in delicate wild floras, that stood, glowing lambently in the soft dim light, in the center of a small, secluded, fern-shrouded clearing. Water was falling steadily from the top, filling the wide, lavish green carpeted, invisible basin. You know, I've wondered ever since the trailer of Netflix's #shadowandbone was released last year whether I would fall into the camp of gushing, never-ending love for the book of it or not? However, I find myself uselessly sitting somewhere in the middle, lonesomely twiddling my thumbs and pondering all the different things I liked but didn't love and disliked but didn't hate. How very annoying of me. I'm sitting here going through my mental list of the book's faults whilst simultaneously trying to figure out what organs and/or limbs I can get away with exchanging for an ARC of #siegeandstorm the next up in my line, while writing down this review. Shadow and bone is the first installment of the #Grishatrilogy and the first book published in the #Grishaverse. This book is about the once-great nation of Ravka that has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of darkness that is crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Alina Starkov, an orphan reveals a power that saves her best friends life and that is the key to setting Ravka free. Alina is taken away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling and so on the story continues. The plot of this book is developed enough to masquerade the fact that the biggest chunk of it is the usual boarding school fare with makeovers, mean girl drama, petty rivalries, balls and a bit of steamy(ish) romance with the hottest guy on the block. Writer Leigh Bardugo's writing style is easy and engaging. She even succeeds at creating an "exotic" backdrop for her story - an early 20th century Russia-inspired fantasy land of Ravka. Even with my issues concerning the accuracy of everything borrowed from Russian culture, I will still say that the author manages to create a very distinct atmosphere in her novel. And speaking of this atmosphere, Russian "flavor" if you will, Shadow and Bone is a rare book whose covers reflect the novel's mood well, even though I find the tagline to be a bit misleading and melodramatic. This novel is not as romancey as the line "A dark heart. A pure soul. A love that will last forever" would imply. Alright, so I read this book way back when it came out and wrote this review right then & there but as my IG was deactivated, I couldn't manage to put it up over here though as they say, better late than never so here I am, with my review of the 3rd installment of The Ramchandra Series by #AmishTripathi ✨ All those who've read the previous books of this series already know that the third main character of the epic tale of Ramayan is the antagonist, Raavan. We don't get to read a lot about him in the Indian mythology but he undoubtedly tops the villains list. Going by the disappointment of previous books in the series, I had zero expectations from this one. I liked the Amish's imagination in bringing out a backstory for Raavan though I cannot stop wondering if it's okay to paint a historic epic in the colors that make it seem more romantic to our age. At least, for all the Ramayan I know of, Raavan was no Snape! It's two entirely different things if a man lusts for a woman & kidnaps her versus if he kidnaps her for any other reason. Though we might desire it with all our heart, villains in real life have no real morals to them, they don't follow logic and they cannot have possibly exhibited or experienced selfless love at any point & that's what makes them villains. I would have agreed more if Raavan was pictured like Voldemort but with much more intellect and strength. Raavan was so powerful, he was believed to have had all the planets under his control to the extent of being able to alter people's destiny though this book's narration doesn't justify such a strength. In the beginning, I couldn't digest the amount of gore that has been described. This was quite unnecessary. I mean, a couple of times is fine but almost every duel, fight, killing is described with gruesome details. Some characters in the book could have been explored further. Mareech, Akampana, M'Bakur and above all, Samichi. There was a scope to enhance the storyline giving some depth to these characters. Exploring the theme of fear and intimacy as it's #Valentines, consider any tendencies you have to push love away. Do you feel the need to protect yourself? Is there something that you fear? Are there any beliefs you hold that keep you at a distance? With all the #love songs written about heartbreak, most of us are well aware that opening our heart to another can be risky. It's in our nature to be drawn to relationships and the companionship of intimacy they bring, but when we make ourselves vulnerable to others, we also risk getting hurt. Our fear of intimacy is often subconscious, developed way back in childhood. Perhaps we learnt to fear rejections or abandonment. Perhaps we learnt to push people away to protect ourselves. Or perhaps in an effort to avoid the footsteps of our unhappy parents, we choose to evade love altogether. Avoiding love might seem to be the smartest way to minimize the risk of getting hurt. We put up Armor, we wrap ourselves up in a cocoon of storylines that protect us from suffering and keep us safe. The thing is, when we shut the door on love, we lose out of one of the most exhilarating, unifying experiences in life. So once we've built the cocoon, how can we wrestle outside of it and release our old storylines? The answer is #awareness! First we must understand our fears and narratives. when we're triggered and fear arises, we pay attention to what comes up in our relationship with others. Through awareness, we become mindful of our armor. We begin to understand our core beliefs so we can question and challange them in the face of fear and in overtime, the more we face fear and touch fear, the more it softens and the more courageous we become. Love can nurture us, heal us and transform us. So it's worth it to move beyond our fears and open to one of life's greatest gifts. Well, this book was gifted to me as a New Year's gift by @eruditesourav and it's been a long since I've been reading it. Not because it was hard to read but because it was advised by the author to give it time and read different chapters at different places on random days. Well anyway, finally I've finished this amazing book & here I'm, with #MyReview of Neil Pasricha's #TheHappinessEquation 📚 One of this book's major anchors (as far as the thought process) is the way it connects our modern shift to wanting more (modern consumption) to the old paradigm that prioritizes food and safety as primary in both ancient and relatively recent history. Happiness is thus, in a way, a more pertinent question for us in the modern age given the re-orientation of the way we live our lives in much of the world (which correlates with the idea that the portion of our brain that can contemplate happiness is also relatively modern). This is not true for all of course, but it is likely true for the vast portions of the books audience. And here-in lies a part of the book's weakness. It doesn't push far enough to cross these boundaries between the affluent and the less than affluent, and in doing so doesn't do enough to divert us from keeping "have" as our end goal. It goes a long ways (rightly so) to dispel the modern myth of more is better, & addresses the limitations of our pursuit for success on puruely monetary and status terms. Where the book loses me is in the failure to fully reconcile our idea of happiness outside of notions of "having". It does help to reorient our ways of thinking about why and how and what, but it doesn't fully protect against the trappings of the to-do-list. Much of where the book re-orients our thinking is in our recognition of the inner/outward conundrum (what matters most is what we think of ourselves), the powerful impact of understanding the place of negative/positive thinking, and time management.
