I know I haven’t been active here, but I wanna quickly hop back on to promote my most recent fic: Sunless Fire! It is a HTTYD/Skyrim crossover that follows Hiccup as he traverses the lands of Skyrim in hopes of finding the key to defeating Alduin, the God of Destruction.

Thinking about Vex going home to Percy and her pitch for him going to help with the Key is just:

“You know the dead lady we helped revive, like, three months ago?”

“The one with Delilah in her head? Yes, I remember.”

“Well, I met up with her in Vasselheim after she returned from the moon and her party said that they were able to push Delilah into a soul anchor and I think that now that she’s making her hurt for time and all eternity, we kind of owe her this? Don’t you?”

“Percival?”

“Let me inform the guard.”

The fact that Bells Hells are so,,, scattered, is what I think makes them such a compelling party to me. Cause you have Ashton and Fearne who represent the Titans as well as the very earth and fire that molded the planet, Imogen who represents the moon and the storms, Chetney is the wild and the creative, Orym is the nature and the bonds, Dorian is the sky, winds, and music of the air, Laudna is the darkness that can bloom and the joys of life on Exandria, FCG was the automatons and Aeor history. (Braius remains to be seen, but I think of him as the inherit redemption that Exandria had gone through after the Calamity).

I think all of them represent a facet of the planet as a whole and the fact that they are going to ruidus to take care of Predathos and Ludinus is the best option. Because, to me, this isn’t a Gods vs God Killer fight, this is Exandria vs its very Destruction.

They don’t know what’ll happen when Predathos is released. They don’t know if it’ll stop at the gods. Worst case scenario, Exandria is DESTROYED. COMPLETELY. That is still a possibility that they must face.

So to have this final fight be fought by this party made up of all the things of Exandria is so special and a beautiful way to pay homage to the world that critters have witnessed this group travel for almost ten years.

I think about this post every day

One of the things i find interesting about world building where I take our Earth and insert something new into it is trying to determine how the people would react. How do these people fare with this new topic of conversation that’s slowly becoming a normal thing? One thing that I never think about when making these types of worlds is how normal events are changed.

For example (since it’s relevant): the Olympics.

In my world, there is millions-of-years-old magic from a war long ago that is awakened by the main characters stepping foot on the planet. This magic quickly becomes a major issue in international politics since the main character, who’s tasked herself with fighting the monsters that are emerging from hibernation, doesn’t seem to stem from a single area. She’s said that she isn’t of Earth, but no one really believes her since “she looks human!”.

Many people think that regular humans can harness this magic and some athletes start to wonder if things like magic-enhancers can impact one’s performance in sports. Thinking about this kind of thing is so interesting to me and it helps to live through events to help me determine how this fake world would interact with the event now that magic is a talking point. I tend to ignore international events like this but now that I’m more serious about writing my world, it makes me stop and think about the implications.

Sometimes, when writing stories, you don’t have to think about the world at large, since it takes place in small areas or very little people are involved. Now, I have to look into global politics and look at each country and think about how they’d respond to an alien magic hero saving them.
