Structure Evaluation

I have found this breif to be one of the more challenging briefs yet, i have had to reshoot my structure 4 times due to different reasons including weather and lighting.

This breif has taught me a lot of life skills such as map reading, to figure the best time to shoot with the lighting but also trying to get a perfect day when it would be dry with a clear sky.

When i had finally got my final shots using photoshop to stop any manipulations was a very difficult job as i am not 100% with using photoshop.

However as a whole after many failed attempts i have finally got the shots i had been looking for.

Decade Photographic

The decade i received was the 1970’s during this decade a lot had happened and changed for the better in photographic history.

In 1970, the first CCD video camera was released by bell labs, it was the worlds first video camera using CCD as the image device.

Between 1971 and 1972 the first polaroid square shooter was released, with a retail price of $34.95.

In 1974 Dr. Gil Amelio conceives a fabrication process that allows CCDs to be produced on a conventional water fabrication line.

In 1975 The Cromemco Cyclops was an all digital camera intoduced as a commercial project.

In 1976 Canon released the 110ED, with an F2 and a 25mm lens, Shutter 8-1/500seconds and the viviparous 600 camera had F8 24mm. Shutter 1/250 seconds only.

In 1978 The sonar onestep was one of the unique cameras polaroid produced using high frequency sound waves to oporate the autofocus system.

In 1979 Many photography hobbyists started developing, processing and printing film in their own home photographic labs.

Over the 1970’s alone it’s clear that there is a massive change from the beginning to the end of how much technology has changed and how the photographic history changed throughout that short time period.

Who are you? Why choose photography? Eureka Moment.

My name is Fiona White, I come from a small town central scotland called wishaw, quite a small and deprived area, when i’m not at college thriving in a photography based environment, I am our working one of my 3 jobs, in my spare time I enjoy going out with my friends and socialising, I enjoy going on spontaneous trips out to get pictures on nice days. The thing that got me insterested in photography was initially my hair dresser, he had used the model Kate Moss to style her hair and at the bottom of the page on the magazine his name was on it, having this in the back of my mind I was very interested in being able to produce a similar image one day, we had went on a family holiday later that year to Egypt and I had just to a few snaps but when i started to look at them I was really enjoying it and decided to take it up and a hobby from there, however I am wanting to further this skill and hopefully make it my career. The above images were taken between 2011-2013 just on an ipod, however having said this, these are the images that made me realise i did enjoy taking pictures and using the likes of composition.

Attached above are 7 links to different car adverts showing off different cars in different ways, using a mixture of composition, lighting and all over different creative ideas, if i combine a few ideas but try to keep it basic, i think i could pull this shoot off, i aim on using lighting as the main controllable feature to my advantage, in doing this i will be able to create mood and atmosphere if using the correct composition to match the lighting. I feel that this shoot could be execruted very well of thought through properly and analysing every aspect of each individual research video.

Clean White Research! To get my clean white portraits done, i will have to use polystyrene flags between the lights and the model to try and prevent flare onto my model, i aim on using the 3rd and 4th images as my main inspiration. During the set up process as shown in the image attached above, i will be trying to create a silhouette image before i turn on my main softbox above the camera to make sure the back ground is perfectly white with no flare onto the subject. For this project i will be using a 3 light set up, one for frontal lighting and i aim on using a softbox on this to help create a more delicate look. For the other 2 lights i will have the set up symmetrical and in doing so i will have my two background lights with a barn door lighting attachment to create the most impact on the background. I will meter my background to ensure that all over it is sitting at F8. I feel like these images re a great mix of harsh and soft lighting, so the us of a soft box or a beauty dish.

Personally I like the last image as her cheek bones are so defined I would think this was done using a beauty dish however the only all back of this image is that the background isn't entirely white, it is mainly grey towards the top left corner. Th first image also has this image of not having an entirely white background, that is down to the set up of the image as your set up should be similar to the diagram attached above.

Movie Poster, Research and final!

Structure Research. Images 1,2,4&5 can be found on the City Of Glasgow College website however the photographer has not been credited. However image 3 was taken by Keith Hunter. All of these images show off the college building structure very well however none of these images do the building any justice to the scale of the actual building. To fit our brief we are required to have 3 exterior images and 2 interior images. I feel that this research will be extremely handy to reflect back upon while trying to capture the brief to its entirety.

The event i have lined up in a ‘Fight For Your Fitness’ boxing match in the Glasgow Marriott Hotel. It is a massive event so i found this link to be very useful in terms of a few wee tips and hints before going to the event. The above 5 images are all a different style i feel but equally just as strong as each other. Fast shutters must have been used to try and get the very quick action shots however in doing his your aperture must be a reasonable size, having said this i feel like this will be tricky to carry out as it will be a very well lit and controlled lighting event, the above link mentions flare and i feel like this may be a challenge to over come.

Illuminate Brief Research. Image 1- Caryn Esplin Image 2- Monte Stevens Image 3- Dave Black Image 4- Simon Plant Image 5- Darwin Mulligan I feel that all of the above images are ideal for research as it shows painting with light but on bigger scale such as landscapes, most of the images here have a fantastic mood and atmosphere to them which has been added by the photographer using light to their advantage during the golden hour to help add a subtle hint of lighting into the background just after the sun has sent leaving the background with hints of warm and welcoming tones to it.

These imaged are a fab example of lighting as the majority have been shot just after sunset and during the golden hour.

Studio Still Life- Gift Project Above I have attached 5 images of foil baking cases. For my gift, I chose a pack of 40 foil baking cases to use for my studio still life. Above I have attached 5 inspirational images I found on the internet, usually you should credit the photographers however I can only credit image 5 who is by Marie-Louise Avery. By doing my research I have found some strong images, by analysing these I have been able to get spin off ideas from these and I will apply these ideas to my still life shoot. All of these images have a basic clean white background, I aim on trying to use completely different backgrounds mainly black but backgrounds which contain a lot of texture to help show the lighting a bit better. The images above have quite basic lighting from directly above however they are able to minimise the specular highlights, they do this by using flags in the appropriate areas and using reflectors to try and eat eliminate any shadows cast due to the shape of the foil baking tray.

The Decade I was given was the 1970’s

1970- Demonstrators Tom Doerr and Marty Robinson during the Gay Activists Alliance sit-in at New York State Republican headquarters in NYC. 1971- The Bangladesh liberation was started in march and ended in December. 1972- September 5-6th Munich massacre & The Summer Olympics also took place but in Munich. 1973- British Grand Prix, and the English cricket were massive sporting events during this year. 1974- Richard Nixon resigns as president on the 9th of August 1974. 1975- Vietnam war ended in April. 1976- Massive economic inflation and political decants. 1977- Soviet Union launched Soyuz the 24 space mission. 1978- Egypt and Israel sign thee camp David Accords, resulting in piece between the two countries. 1979- The United States and the Soviet Union reached an agreement during the strategic arms limitations.

Final Clean White Image.

After several attempts in the studio, I was not 100% keen on the images I had to I tried once more and I am extremely happy with how these images have turned out, the whole shoot went brilliant and couldn't have hoped for better. The digital copies are in my personal opinion very strong, and the film images are still in the process of being developed and processed.

Final Who Are You on A3 Canvas

For my final images, I had to visit the same location several times per image.

For my location shot I had struggled quite a bit to get this image as I had visited the locations a few times and it was either raining or extremely overcast, however keeping these difficult weather conditions in mind I tried each time and was unsuccessful until the sun was just setting and the weather conditions were dry with a fair bit of cloud cover but no where near enough as the previous nights.

For my object shot, I was aiming to have a shot across the front of my Bonet with the park in the background but slightly out of focus, yet again the weather had changed rather suddenly and I had ended up just taking it from the inside of the car with the water from the park in the background, however with the weather change my image has worked better as the rain across the windscreen helps to create more of a dull mood with the water from the park in the background through the rain drops on the windscreen.

For my portrait image, I was aiming originally to get my portrait from my backseat set up on a tripod of the side of my face booking gout my windscreen but the camera facing my wing mirror, due yet again to poor lighting conditions this wasn't capable, where I had parked my car, the carpark was far too dark and dull to get the image with very little sun light available to use to my advantage, so I had tried to use my interior mirror to get my portrait, this worked so much better however due to the lighting I had to open my aperture quite a bit and slow my shutter down more as well as increasing my ISO ever so slightly.

Daylight Portrait’s

The daylight portrait’s we have to try and recreate each lighting technique, these include, Direct lighting, Flagged lighting, Reflected lighting and Window light.

As show in the images above each different lighting technique gives off a very different yet effective feel, I am personally drawn towards flagged lighting images, however it can be difficult to achieve an effective look, however the image shown above as an example has used the use of the flag very effectively and there for adds to the atmosphere of the image.
