Clean White Final Images + Evaluations

As a result to my plan for this shoot, I have successfully be able to include the aspect of Conor’s tattoo to symbolise mental health awareness. As this image was taken within a photography studio, I this therefore been lit by photography studio lighting and as been by the catch lights in Conor’s eyes, light boxes has been used to diffuse this light source. I had my model raise his right arm (to the model) and drape it over his head to ensure I was capturing the main idea of the image. I deliberately chose a neutral facial expression as it is a serious topic to touch upon in the image. An aspect I enjoy about the image is the blood shot eyes - it gives the reader a sense of emotion, it portrays the model as tired or perhaps burned out, I think it intercepts well with the story of my model.

Keeping to the same ideology, I chose a different pose to still incorporate this subject of the tattoo. This time I had Conor cover half his face with the idea of this side of him being hidden or in the dark by being covered up - it isn't an aspect of a person of which is clearly in the open or obvious. As this image was taken within a photography studio, I this therefore been lit by photography studio lighting and as been by the catch lights in Conor’s eyes, light boxes has been used to diffuse this light source. I deliberately chose a neutral facial expression as it is a serious topic to touch upon in the image. Clean White Plan

I plan to have Conor model for me on this shoot. As a result to a planning conversation we had privately, we have agreed to embrace mental illness within this image. Conor has a tattoo symbol for mental health awareness (;), an aspect of which I would like to include within this image. The symbol itself expresses a part of Conor that may not be clearly obvious. I have planned sever poses to try include this tattoo in frame.

Clean White Research

This is a high key image of Lady Gaga. The model has been placed to the left of the centre the frame, however her eye has been placed more central frame with her shoulder cropped out and set at a slight angle. The photographer has posed the model to what appears grab her hair and cover her right eye and to open her mouth to reveal her top teeth. The image has also been cropped quite tight at the top to just touch on her hair. This has the effect of making the viewer follow the contours of her head down around her face. The model’s make-up has been done perfectly and compliments her eyes, skin tones and bone structure, the make-up artist has gone for a heavy glam look to bring out her eyes. The fact she has bare shoulders adds to the high key effect as does the white backdrop. There may have been two softboxes used, which I would guess are facing each other, as seen by the catchlight in her eyes, this image is highly exposed. The image has been taken at eye level and the purpose could be an advertising shot for a make-up brand or to promote the artist and her work.

This is a studio image of Manny MUA. The model has been placed centre to the frame with his shoulders straight and his hand touching his head in a relaxed manner. The model’s make-up has been done perfectly and compliments his eyes, skin tones and bone structure, the make-up artist has gone for a light glam look to bring out his eyes. The fact his shirt is white adds to the high key effect as does the white backdrop. It is difficult to tell what light source issuing used as his eyes are closed, however I believe the light source is coming from directly in front as his eyelids and lips are lit by the source, possibly a soft box as the light is softer on his face, this image is highly exposed. The image has been taken at eye level and the purpose could be an advertising shot for a make-up brand or to promote his artistry with morphe.

Self-Portraiture Research

A self-portrait is a portrait that an artist produces of themselves, unlike a ‘selfie’ in which is taken by a smartphone camera, a self-portrait is taken by a professional camera. unlike most selfies, self-portrait images are composed and thought out.

Vivian Dorothy Maier was an American street photographer whose work was discovered and recognized after her death. She worked for about 40 years as a nanny, mostly in Chicago's North Shore, while pursuing photography.

Exposure Triangle

The Exposure Triangle consists of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. These work together to regulate the amount of light that makes it to the light-sensitive surface, creating a properly exposed image.

Who Are You Location Idea

For this shoot, I'd love to visit my gender clinic ‘yourgp’, only with my camera this time. This clinic is playing a huge part in my life right now as they are the minds behind my further steps of my medical transition. I personally think the location of the clinic is gorgeous, I enjoy the scenery every time being there, its almost fairytale-like - a hidden gem within Edinburgh.

I do hope for this to be possible considering the Covid rules.

Who Are You Still Life Idea

For this, I have decided to take an image of the first homme fragrance I ever bought since coming out. having dealt with gender dysphoria most of my life, this little bottle of scent brought me a lot of feelings of gender euphoria in which I was yet to feel at last. I would like to attempt to take this shot in the bath, I may consider a milky bath to bring out the green of the bottle, I may try some shots with a delicate bloody aspect.

Camera lens filters

Circular Polariser

a polarizer reduces reflected light before light enters your lens. This allows you to have control over reflections, you will instead see detail of the subject instead of a reflected surface.

Neutral Density Filter

this is a filter that reduces or modifies the intensity colours, of light equally, giving no changes in hue of colour rendition - it will reduce the amount of light. these will be used for long exposure shots.

Ultraviolet UV Filter

this filter will protect the front element of a lens. most DSLR cameras have theses built into their construction.

Red Filter

this filter add mood to a scene, typically to landscape photography. these filters can deepen skies and control any weather conditions such as fog or smoke.

80B filter 

this is a blue, or cooling filter. it may be used when yellow or orange light is within the scene, it will help cool the light down to a less warm tone.

Chromatic Aberration

As from this image we can see the appearance of the colour bleed, of which bleeds a blue tone off the hand of the model, caused by chromatic aberration.

Refraction Of Light

Light travels in a straight line, but bends as it travels (refraction Is the change in direction of the light). Beams of light are made up of many rays of light, and travels in a straight light. A transparent object can bend the light all while allowing it to still travel in a straight line.

lens function

when light rays travel through the lens they travel in a refraction order, where it bends inwards to focus to a single point, creating an image - the focal point. spherical aberration is when the rays at the edge of the lens converge. chromatic aberration is when the focal point of red wavelengths are further away from the lens, rather than blue which is closer - this causes colours to shift, as a result colours will appear to bleed. It shifts in focus between colour.

Light passing through a prism creates a display of colour. concave lenses work in reverse to convex. using both lenses will eliminate chromatic aberration.

Qualities Of Light

Diffusion

The definition of diffusion is a physical device of which scatters light evenly, such as a soft box. This device will reduce shadows and soften the light from the original light source.

Direct Light

This is direct and un-diffused lighting.  This typically could be sunlight or un touched studio lighting.

Transmission

The definition of Transmission Light is when light passes through an object, such as a window to light your subject or model.

Reflection

This is of where light is reflected onto the subject or model. The use of reflectors will control this light better.

Diffused Reflection

Light will bounce off and go at lots of different angles. 

Diffused transmutation

The light passes through material and spreads evenly so it is therefore a soft even light.

Who Are You Self Portrait Shoot

For this portrait I had the idea of using the concept around my gender. I put myself into the eyes of my my mother, someone who chose not to support me throughout my transition. My mum would typically speak to me as if I had MPD or was... dead - as have others during my journey. This is where my idea has sprouted, my gender is a massive part of my life and am now open to share my journey. 

My plan became more inspired by crime, I had some fake blood and decided to use it to my advantage. I smothered myself and bathroom in it and created this concept of ‘The Aftermath Of A Murder’. I played around with viewpoints and poses with the little space I had to offer. I think I successfully captured this atmosphere of ‘killing’ the past or who I once were physically.

In order to take this image I had to enter the loft area of the house. I had my papa step up onto the set of ladders as I pointed my camera downwards towards the subject. I had my model look into the lens with neutral expression as he grabbed the side of the ceiling door. I shot this image on a small f number to capture a blurred frame and backdrop to remain attention to the main subject of the image. The image has been lit by a bar/strip light that is installed within the loft, the lightbulb below the subject has also been turned on.

Environmental Plan

I have planned to photograph my papa for this project. I plan to take the image from the attic, using a downwards viewpoint onto my papa who will be on the set of ladders. I aim to use a range of poses and viewpoints, however this is the initial thought process of this idea.
