Sirius shrugged, smiling slightly at Stubby’s laughter. “Not too lost. Everyone loves LA, right? And Cleveland has….” Something important to do with rock. Sirius squinted while he tried to remember. “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” He nodded then added, half-joking. “So what’s in Canada besides syrup?”
Personally, Sirius wished he had time to travel. If he’d been less busy with the Order, he probably would have traveled after school. As it was, he was mostly stuck home–pulled into the conflict almost because of his loyalties more than anything else. Vaguely, he wondered if he would be involved at all if it weren’t for his blood and for those he’d chosen over it.
Stubby found himself laughing. Honestly he was surprised Sirius knew anything about Cleveland at all. It was rather impressive. He shook his head, “Lots of things, actually, but a shocking amount of syrup too.”
He reached out, touching Sirius’ arm as the spoke. He was the kind that touched, that craved that affection from others even if it was just that simple. He smiled, “Maybe once all this is over I’ll take you with me. Let you see a bit of the world too. I think you’d like that, wouldn’t you?”

There was something troublingly thrilling about signing online at the same time as someone who piqued your interests. This was especially true so late at night, when the world was asleep and only the most intriguing people remained – the tortured souls, the drunks, the party animals, the creative types.
Regulus felt his stomach lurch at the reply, an unwelcome smile lighting up his face. He had seen this “Tatt” person around before, exchanged a few words with him in the forums and the private chats. What it was about him, Regulus couldn’t quite explain. Perhaps it was the way he typed like a proper English gentleman, at least in comparison, or the way he was capable of holding a conversation longer than three posts. Drawing in a deep breath of cool air, Regulus straightened his back, lip sucked between his teeth, and replied.

Stubby found himself smiling as he read the comment to him. He remembered this Arc, they’d spoken a bit before, he was always interesting. Not like the others in the chats. Intelligent, well-spoken, intriguing. Stubby did so love intriguing and interesting people. He’d take this online person their interactions and his games any day over a bustling club full of people wanting a handful of him.

Vague confusion showed in Sirius’ eyes at the kiss to his cheek, but he took it in stride, ignoring it to look Stubby over. He looked about the same as he always did. There was nothing haunting in his eyes, no growing paranoia or worry. Sirius wondered how much Stubby knew about the conflict bubbling just below the surface of the technology popping up around them. Maybe it was better that Stubby wasn’t involved. It was certainly refreshing. Already, Sirius felt more relaxed than he had in a while.
“Usually?” Sirius gave a slightly wry smile, just the curve of one corner of his lips. “Crap, honestly. There’s a lot of shit…” he sighed as quietly as possible and let it go, shrugging for show. “Weird viruses. It’s not too important, though.” What was the point in talking about it to the one person he could get away with letting it rest?
“Where’d you get to go this time?” Sirius grinned, more himself than he had been the moment before. “Don’t know why you’d ever come back here,” he teased. “Boring. The weather’s crap.” He mimicked a posh relative of his own: “Never a day without the rain! Makes my bones ache.” After dropping the act, he chuckled.
Stubby knew a lot more about the climate in their world than people would ever give him credit for. He knew a lot more about most things than people gave him credit for. No one had ever come right out and said it but there was the way he was talked to in interviews, the way people looked at him and the questions he was asked. It was the typical--how could a rock star be intelligent or actually proficient in magic? Wasn’t the fact they went into music as a career because they weren’t good in school or at magic? No, not at all.
“This last trip was longest, to America and Canada. It was lovely though, I always enjoy the States, so similar yet different. I adore Los Angeles and Cleveland and I’m sure you’re more than a little lost or uninterested--” he trailed off, laughing as he shook his head.

During school, whenever fate had dictated that Sirius needed to spend time with someone who wasn’t a Marauder, Stubby had usually been his first choice. A year above, in the year Sirius would have been in had be not been such a late birth, Stubby was as laid back as Sirius wished he could be while having the same sense of adventure and similar humor. Now, they lost touch often for weeks or months at a time between Sirius’ obsessive work with tech and Stubby’s musical success, but neither of them held it against the other and it was easy to catch up whenever Stubby was home.
So it was that Sirius had heard from James who had heard from Frank who had probably heard from Stubby himself that Stubby had been back in London for some time. Eventually, Sirius was free enough from his projects, from his guilt, and from his worries to send Stubby a text. They agreed to meet for drinks, and so Sirius could be found that night walking up to a small muggle bar. He didn’t have to wonder if Stubby had chosen the spot to keep to the side of the growing spotlight around him.
When Sirius spotted his friend, he made his way over, dodging through crowded tables, rogue chairs, and a drunken mass particularly crowded in the center of the floor. He gave Stubby a quick grin before sitting down next to him. “Hey, how’ve you been? How was the tour?” The bartender came over and Sirius ordered a beer before turning his attention back to the conversation.
Stubby had arrived early, as he always did. It was part personality habit and part wanting to make sure he was actually on time should he be stopped by a fan or a gaggle of them. He’d beat Sirius, which wasn’t terribly surprising, and so he got his drink and settled into a booth near the back corner, sort of hiding away from too many prying eyes.
When Sirius made his way over, Stubby looked up at him and smiled brightly, dimples and all. Without another thought, Stubby leaned over and pressed his lips to Sirius’ cheek in greeting. “I’ve been well enough, the tour was great. It’s almost strange being back, but it’s nice to be home for a time. How are you, mate?”

Regulus sat upright in his bed, the cold, blue light of the laptop screen illuminating his face. He had grown more and more accustomed to what 3 am looked like: the way the moon hung high in the air, small and distant, the world outside his window as dark as it would ever hope to be. That was when the house was safest. His parents, and the portraits in the halls, all long since asleep. Even the night shift elves dared not creep up to the highest floors, instead preparing the kitchen and the sitting rooms for the next day.
Something was gnawing away at him, at his insides. Regulus could not pinpoint exactly what they were, or where they were coming from. News of the bombings still popped up on the sidebars of the forums he so often frequented, but they were less frequent, less concrete, focusing more on abstract conspiracy theories than the death toll. Perhaps all it was was the loneliness that accompanied the still of the night.

3AM for Stubby wasn't uncommon. In fact tonight (this morning?) he'd just gotten in after a gig. He was still home, in London but they had a string of concerts around the city over the next month. It was nice to go to work, give a concert but then still be able to be home in his own flat and his own bed that night. The others were partiers far more than he was these days, he was content to go home with a bottle of his own beer from the refrigerator and sit around in his pants. Maybe do a little reading or writing, catch up on the world on his computer. They thought he was boring and if their fans knew, they'd be oh-so-disappointed. Oh well.
With everything going on around him in the Wizarding world, Stubby chose to sign onto his computer and see what he was missing out on elsewhere. Try to forget even if nothing had directly touched him yet.

Arabella smiled as they returned the embrace, laughing softly when Stubby moved in even closer. Their first few times meeting up over drinks or dinner Arabella had wondered where this strange kid thought their relationship was headed. Always strangely friendly and too intimate with his physical affections, Arabella had been waiting for the moment when he crossed some imaginary line they were drawing in their own mind. And yet the moment never came. Stubby was amicable but never romantic, physical but never breaching the accepted personal boundaries of friendship. He was a strange yet charming kid, but never a creep.
With an easy laugh Arabella looked back up at the menu, “I got here early so I could figure out what the hell I’m drinking today.” It was their turn in line and Arabella still had little clue what they wanted. “Didn’t seem to help me much though.” The barista behind the counter was flitting her eyes between Arabella and Stubby, trying to figure out the pair’s dynamic. It was a funny though but sometimes Arabella wondered if anyone ever assumed Stubby was their son. With a few poor age guesses it wouldn’t be a hard assumption to make.
“We have a special drink this week, The Rollin’ Stone is made with…” “I’ll just take a mug of coffee, black with sugar, thanks.” Arabella cut off the barista before she could continue. “Today is a keep it simple kind of day.” They laughed and turned to Stubby. “Add whatever he’s having to my bill, thanks.” Arabella stepped to the side, face set, they wanted no arguments about who pays for what today.
“How have you been, friend?” Arabella asked, hip pressed against the counter as they watched him order.
Stubby laughed at their comment, shaking his head, "You and your confusion over this menu, I swear." He put a hand gently to their lower back, a soft consistent pressure of reassurance that he was close and happy to be with them. He was a very physical person, always wanting some sort of contact or touch with the people he knew and cared for, Arabella was no exception. He'd never met anyone like Ari before and that was just perfect, if you asked him. He loved new people, interesting people. One of the things he hated most was boredom, people too caught up in themselves or in being 'normal' to be anything but boring. You only lived once, you might as well be yourself and be interesting, right?
"This one's boring with their coffee choices," Stubby said to the barista with a charming smile. He wasn't actually flirting but people often thought he was. It was that charming grin of his and that handsome face. Even in Muggle London where next to no one knew who he was Stubby frequently got girls (and boys) staring, flirting, giggling. "I'll have the Cherry Garcia, warm please without any whipped cream. We'll argue over the payment another day."
He looked over at them, smiling a little bit. There was a bit more gentleness to his smile with Arabella and indeed with other people he was fond of than with the general day to day people. He leaned against the counter as well, waiting on their drinks. "Well enough. What about you?" he asked, reaching out a hand without warning to run his fingertips lightly over the back of their hand. To anyone else it would look completely intimate and loving, but it was just that need to touch and be close. If he was actually trying to be intimate, to flirt, you would definitely know.
"You look very nice today, by the way. I should have said that earlier."
“I think, with the position I’ve been given in life, it’s important to try and make a difference.”
