which means

they met when they were young enough to be kind of half-formed, in-between, weird and awkward and embarrassing, and they spent however many stages of becoming side by side. there's a special way you get to know someone when you mature alongside them. there's a give-and-take between the two of you. you shape one another, whether you like it or not. also...

big was there when tawan betrayed kinn. big was close enough to kinn at that time to have his suspicions about tawan before anyone else picked up on the clues. not too much of a stretch to imagine that big was around before tawan, when, according to pete, kinn still loved his people and treated them like friends. big remembers a time when kinn was openly, vulnerably kind and the gulf between boss and bodyguard wasn't quite as wide and deep. therefore...

this isn't just big being in love with a man whom he can never possibly have. this is big being in love with a man whom he could have had, maybe, once. if just one thing had changed. this is big knowing kinn inside and out and being in love with him anyway. this is big giving up kinn's friendship and any chance at anything more for the sake of his safety. this is big remembering kinn at his happiest, remembering how horribly it hurt kinn to be betrayed, and resolving never to let such a thing happen again.
