The Houses on Halloween

Hufflepuff: Giving out free sweets, usually giving treats not tricks, changing the knocking code of the dorm like 24/7 so everyone gets coated with vinegar, using those fake spook toys like shaking someone’s hand and their fake arm falling off, showing up to the October Quidditch game changing their robes to ghosts ‘I know the Whomping Willow is ‘temperamental’ but it’s tradition and I just need to do our Halloween dance and hear the crunch of these leaves stop juDGING

Ravenclaw: Strategically planning ‘safe’ traps around the school. Has the best daily October Halloween wear like glow in the dark hair and colour changing contacts. ‘You don’t know who I am??? I’m a book character! I’ll give you three guesses! No? Ugh.’ Having ghost story meetups every night with actual ghosts, dance routines with fake skeletons, runs out of time to actually make their costume 

Gryffindor: Celebrating Halloween from like September 7th, going mental with the sugar rush, tricks EVERYWHERE that sometimes they forget the tricks they planted themselves and get caught in them, changing reflections around school to something spooky to freak people out, changing the colour of the food at breakfast and dinner, parties at midnight outside with sparklers, ‘Halloween ain’t over till its Christmas!!!!!!’

Slytherin: ‘What do you mean where’s my costume, I’m a witch, that’s a costume in itself.’ fake demonic pentagons all over the dungeon floor, eating dinner and spitting out fake blood, jumpscares, gory looking pumpkins, the BEST group costumes, dropping fake body parts around the school for fun - in drinks is always a good one

Ravenclaws & Prefects

Here we GO

Right. Ravenclaws from a distance are going to be really great Prefects. Fact. 

They’re witty aka they’re so much fun to be around and if you’re looking to them as role models they are super duper because they can be so original in their outlook on life and their outward expressions. They’re gonna make you feel so comfortable like having a cup of hot chocolate by the fire.

So I truly believe they will be great with students of all houses.

However, imagine the Prefects meetings LMAO someone send help.

Not only do we have all 4 houses working together here (which is a struggle in itself) but we have theoretically some of the most ‘responsible’ and ‘influential’ people of the house trying to make plans and solve problems. 

Poor Ravenclaw prefects. I feel sorry for them. I really do.

Imagine the prefects are trying to plan an event. We’ll focus on Ravenclaws here. They’re going to want to have most control over things. I’m not saying they like to be a leader/ in control (definitely not) but they have a ‘vision’ and they’re gonna want to see that through to the end. If they want emerald green tablecloths with rose petals they will die unless they have EMERALD GREEN TABLECLOTHS WITH ROSE PETALS. 

They’re creative guys. Even if their creative ideas seem wacky, once it’s all put together, it will be majestic. But only Ravenclaws and the creative and artistic ones from the other houses are gonna be able to see that. Even still, they could have their doubts.

As I said, they’re witty. So they’re not as sarcastic as Slytherin, but blunt enough. Especially if their riled up.

Ravenclaw Prefect: “I’m just thinking” *whips out sketch book filled with scrawls* “what about we have like little spells in the banners around the castle so when someone walks past it shoots out fireworks?”

Hufflepuff Prefect: “Yeah, that could kill someone???”

Ravenclaw Prefect: “Okay, okay, I understand your concern but what if you maybe just took a step back and appreciated my vision instead of bringing down the party as always okay???”

Hufflepuff Prefect: “Killing! Dead bodies! Not a great plan!”

Ravenclaw Prefect: “What if the fireworks turned to bubbles if they came in contact with someone then?

Slytherin Prefect: “That sounds too complex and a complete time-waster.”

Ravenclaw Prefect: “Look, just because you all have problems with Charms - yes, I checked your records (you’re on a Poor at the moment, Culpens) - doesn’t mean I do.”

They just want to make sure everything is perfect you know? Yet, I can’t see them wanting to take total credit for it if their ideas are used. If any of the ideas show some superior magical intellect like an amazing spell that makes people blow fire when they drink the punch, then yes, they’re likely to love the shower of praise. Otherwise, they just want to make people happy.

Slytherins & Dares

Okay so yeah Gryffindors are the daring type. They’re probably off doing some stupid reckless dares like drinking random potions for fun or jumping out of Gryffindor tower to land on hovering broomsticks.

Slytherins are different. They’re more calm, relaxed, at ease.

Slytherins don’t feel the need to do dares just for fun, they don’t want to impress people like that and they honestly just don’t care.

So, a Slytherin will most likely do a dare if they want to, and if they will get something out of it.

You could walk up to one type of Slytherin and say “Hey do you wanna do a dare?” And they will bat bogey hex you and tell you to bugger off.

Or, you could walk up to a different type of Slytherin and say “Hey do you wanna do a dare?” And they’ll slowly look up at you and say “Depends. What’s in it for me?”

See if a Slytherin can’t be bothered to do something, they just won’t do it! However, Slytherins are ambitious and determined and goal-orientated. If they see that at the end of a dare, they will come out better off, they’ll do it.

They might be motivated to do a dare for an actual object/ item:

“I dare you to stay overnight in the restricted section.”

Slytherin thought process: Hmm I could really use that forbidden Herbology book for that plant I’ve been wanting to make for ages...

Or a feeling/ emotion:

“I dare you to change someone’s hair to match Dumbledore’s - beard included.”

Slytherin thought process: I mean that Selcutt girl from Hufflepuff really pissed me off yesterday when she deliberately ruined my potion to come first in class...

So to compare to Gryffindors:

“I dare you to do a slip n slide on the grand staircase!”

Gryffindor thought process: I mean what a GREAT IDEA YES but we need to get music and cool outfits and unlimited confetti and... what’s that spell to make everything repeat so we can have like a time loop at the end of the staircase so you go through it and end up at the top again and we can have pool floats to go down the stairs and (so on)

Gryffindors just don’t care, if it sounds like fun - they’re in, they just like doing it for the adrenaline rush. Slytherins don’t work like that. You’ll have some Slytherins who will do it just for fun but most of the time they’ll have an underlying sense of self-preservation. If it’s not worth the hassle/ struggle/ embarrassment - they won’t do it.

Slytherins are calculating and dares are one thing they will work out to the last DETAIL there will be no loopholes and no links to bring it back to them.

So don’t start a dare war with a Slytherin because you will be caught and they never will be.

Hufflepuffs + Kindness

HUFFLEPUFFS 👏 ARE 👏 DANGEROUS 👏

If you disagree then you are a fool, my friend, an absolute fool.

Okay where to even begin...

Right so it’s well known that Hufflepuff is the house of the loyal and the just and blah blah blah yeah that’s great don’t get me wrong but WOW have you ever seen a Hufflepuff angry?????? No you probably haven’t because you wouldn’t be alive lemme tell you.

Hufflepuffs are kind and generous but really so are every other house?? What makes Hufflepuffs unique in every way is their undying loyalty towards those they value. Now this could also include their enemies.

Let me explain. A Gryffindor, for example, is gonna be more like a Hufflepuff in regards to enemies. At the end of the day, they will probably help them if they’re in danger. I’m not saying a Ravenclaw and a Syltherin wouldn’t, I just mean that those two houses are more likely to think “how will this benefit me in the long run” whereas a Hufflepuff and a Gryffindor will do it out of the kindness of their hearts and/ or because it’s the right thing to do. Sorry if that doesn’t make sense lol

Hufflepuffs are more likely to take a lot of hits, verbally, physically and mentally. That takes a huge amount of strength and bravery. They’re likely to lay their lives down for others but more subtly than a Gryffindor. However, they’re not ones to jump into a fight if someone insults them??? They’re more likely to take it in their stride, take the higher ground, maybe throw in a bit of dry humour or sarcasm or the “kill them with kindness” thing.

Personally I think Hufflepuffs can be like a total switch? It’s like Hufflepuffs are calm and collected by nature but my goodness if you insult someone close to them wow you’re gonna be in for an earful. It’s unjust and unfair? So of course they’re gonna give it to you? It’s disrespectful to them and I don’t know how to explain it but it’s almost as if the dignity of their friends is more important to them than their own?

They’re super passionate about loyalty so I feel like if you broke their trust then you have a hell of a lot of making up to do before you get in their good books again (if you ever get in their good books again).

The thing is, a Sytherin wouldn’t be able to trust someone who broke their promise, so they’d probably just drop the person and never look back. Hufflepuffs are kind and are more the forgiving type so they will accept your apology but they’ll need proof.

Just don’t insult someone close to a Hufflepuff. If you do, well, they’ll probably kill you.

And then they’ll bring you back to life to kill you again.

Gryffindors + Fights

Honestly just because Gryffindor House is brave and courageous doesn’t mean they like fighting.

Sure, they end up in fights and will most likely stand their ground to see the end of one. However, some Gryffindors prefer to stand back, on the sidelines. They will defend their honour and the honour of others but remember Gryffindors are chivalrous (!?!?!???) they won’t want to damage their reputation or hurt someone unintentionally.

Gryffindors will often be those people who are “too confrontational” or “always starting arguments” in reality, a Slytherin-Gryffindor friendship, for example, will be the most honest one you’ll get. A Gryffindor will speak their mind, being braver than most and will tell you if they don’t like how you’re acting. Some people don’t like that. They don’t like being told when they’re wrong but that’s exactly what a Gryffindor will do? Don’t get angry at them for being truthful?

Gryffindors just want others to see their point of view in an argument. Again, they’re chivalrous. They want to be equal with others, but sometimes that is misinterpreted as starting an argument. They will frequently say “you’re not listening to me” and “that’s not what I’m trying to say” but will always be challenged by people who refuse to be open minded.

They just want to help people and protect others, it’s in their nature to almost sacrifice themselves for others. Therefore you can’t blame them for ending up in fights a lot of the time, usually all they see is the end consequence and not all the problems they’ll have to face to get there (that’s more a Ravenclaw thing).

Bravery doesn’t mean starting fights but knowing when you should stand down from one.

Ravenclaws + Interests

Not all Ravenclaws love studying... shock!

Realistically does anyone love studying? Probably some people. Are they all in Ravenclaw? Probably not.

Ravenclaws value intelligence. That doesn’t mean you have to be mentally fantastic at a subject. Most people link smarts to school subjects but you could be intelligent at digital art, or playing an instrument, or figuring out the perfect steps in a dance routine!

Ravenclaws are who they are because they have a deeply rooted interest in something. They will often be very passionate about the things they like to do.

For example, say if you’re a Ravenclaw at Hogwarts and you’re on the Quidditch team. Your heart and soul revolves around Quidditch - so much so that your grades are failing and your social life is non-existent. But you don’t care because all you know is that Quidditch is all you want to do for the rest of your life.

That’s what makes you a Ravenclaw.

You’ll play Quidditch, you’ll watch videos about Quidditch, you’ll teach yourself to become better, you might even listen to types of music to get you in the zone or read books about Quidditch.

It’s that drive and willingness to learn more about what you love.

People won’t stereotype you as nerdy though? You’ll be the “star player” type right? That personality may even come off as aggravating to friends who want to spend time with you or the type who is ready to curl into a ball and die at the thought of opening a book to study because they’d rather be outside!

Ravenclaws love what they love, and often this can come before anything else in their life. So Ravenclaws, be careful! Don’t let your passions consume you - it’s always interesting to find new hobbies!

Slytherins + Lying

Not all Slytherins are the most amazingly brilliant liars.

In fact, a lot of them are useless.

This is what probably makes a lot of Slytherin-Slytherin friendships so hilarious. One friend might be the worst liar ever “no I swear I didn’t steal your homework” and their friend could be a flawless liar “why did you have to say anything I told you I’d handle it and now you’ve gone and messed it up you absolute idiot”

Additionally, a unsuspecting Hufflepuff could be the best liar ever and save their Slytherin friend from trouble a lot of the time.

A key thing to remember is that a Slytherin is ambitious and sly - they use this to their benefit in difficult situations, such as lying to someone. Just because someone can’t lie doesn’t mean they can’t untangle themselves from a tricky situation. A slytheirns apt ability to judge someone’s personality and their practical mind will help them smoothly talk their way out of unwanted situations - Slytherins are charmers and have a great way with words!

Of course a cool, relaxed and cunning personality is exactly what makes the Slytherin house a usually good bunch of liars but there’s always the exception.

A Slytherin is a powerful ally - regardless of their lying ability.

Slytherins + Relationships

Okayyyyyy Slytheirns are complex individuals.

Most often than not, a Slytherin will go after what they want. This, for some Slytherins is the same with romantic interests or even platonic friendships.

It’s very much a “I want you to be my friend” or “Let’s be friends” or “You are my friend now” they’re kinda possessive like that I guess? It all stems from their attitude of trust. They have a tendency to only trust a limited amount of people and therefore may have a hard time with getting to know people in general. Putting up a wall is the best way to describe this? This is a similar trait to Gryffindors who don’t like showing their weakness to others and therefore can find it difficult to let people in?

Slytherins are cunning - this can also be translated to thoughtfulness. They will do anything to get someone’s attention... without actually... getting their attention? They aren’t Gryffindors - they don’t necessarily like to have the spotlight on them all the time. So they may find out what the person they’re interested in likes to do, or what they like to eat, and they use this to their advantage!

It’s clear that Slytherins are practical and use their head a lot of the time. They don’t go with the flow and fall head over heels as much as Hufflepuffs do and they certainly don’t think it through as much as Ravenclaws do, so they’re kinda in the middle? They have a tendency to overthink - “should I have sent that text?” “what if they don’t feel the same” “why did I say that I’m such an idiot” but also they can use their own self-confidence to bounce back “who wouldn’t want me I mean come on” “you know what all you need is some self-care get me the pizza and chocolate”

Slytherins are ambitious and can be sensitive. This is a rough combination. Sometimes they can set themselves goals that are too far out of reach and in relationships may expect too much of themselves or their significant other. This can cause major downfalls and make them upset - they don’t like to be thrown off balance.

If you’re a Slytherin, relax a little, things happen for reasons you can’t always control!

If you’re with a Slytherin, romantically, platonically... good luck.

Hufflepuffs + Arguments

A less common topic is an angry Hufflepuff.

It should be quite clear that every house is going to have their peaceful moments and every house is going to have their arguments, this is the same with people - some people are more argumentative than others.

Let’s just say you never want to get on the wrong side of a Hufflepuff.

While Gryffindors are often seen as the ones who start arguments, a Hufflepuff can be one to end them.

They’re fiercely loyal - which is a well known fact - therefore, you mess with one of their friends and they’ll mess with your face.

They also, while patient, will perservere. They don’t hold grudges so much, but they will make sure a fight ends when it needs to, regardless of a good or bad ending.

Hufflepuffs are sensitive but sometimes not as much as Ravenclaws or Slytherins, which is why a Gryffindor-Hufflepuff friendship is one of the strongest out there. Basically defending eachother to death.

A Hufflepuff will not hold back in their anger. They will admit when they are wrong, of course, it’s only fair. But if someone is unfair to them, you better keep clear because a war is heading your way.

Unlike Slytherins who are cunning and may use more manipulative ways to get to someone, or Ravenclaws who use emotions and intelligence, or even Gryffindors who may use physical contact or verbal strength, a Hufflepuff who is upset with someone will be almost 100x scarier.

Don’t believe me? Think about it. Imagine the nicest, most generous, tolerant, accepting person you know. You definitely won’t expect to see them shouting the head off someone.

It would be expected if a Hufflepuff is sassy or sarcastic. They’ll be straight to the point but not as blunt as Gryffindors and in order to avoid conflict (they don’t particularly live for arguments) they will be passive-aggressive.

Hufflepuffs are only angry when provoked - this is what makes them different from the rest of the houses.

It’s important to note though that if a Hufflepuff wrongly accuses someone of something, they will go out of their way to make everything right. Expect handmade gifts, multiple apologies, affection, the package.

Basically treasure a Hufflepuff but don’t piss them off. They’re badgers for a reason.

Gryffindors + Opinions

The older Gryffindors get, the more they usually want to share their opinion on things. They have a tendency to never back down from a disagreement, so if someone challenges them, they find it enjoyable to discuss things back and forth. This can result in them getting agitated and can lead to impulsive and heated arguments. Perhaps they never got to express their opinions when they were younger or feel like they are old enough to just come out and say how they feel in situations. It doesn’t always have to be arguing with someone. Gryffindors can be blunt in the sense that if someone asks where they want to go for food or what they want to do today, they just straight up say the time and place. That doesn’t mean they’re great at making decisions though, they also procrastinate a lot, but if they’re 100% done with the unorganisation, they’ll do it themselves - their leadership skill set shining through.

The Hogwarts Houses Before Exams

Gryffindor: batches of notes and flash cards everywhere, highlighted in bright, random colours, looking like they rolled out of bed but have a crazed look in their eyes like they've just drank 19 cups of coffee Hufflepuff: trying to calm themselves down, doesn't know whether to laugh or cry, mumbling to themselves with wild hand gestures, lucky charm clenched in their hand, offering a kind, listening ear to anyone who looks worried Ravenclaw: quill tucked behind their ear, quickly explaining things to everyone else, ranting about something that isn't even on the exam, saying random, memorised words aloud, which only make sense to them and no one else Slytherin: calm, but look like they've been up all night, pacing back and forward with echoing footsteps, chewing gum to relieve stress, neat notes - colour co-ordinated and organised in alphabetical order, looking like they'd rather be anywhere else
