It’s my last update for a little while as I haven’t got any more chapters pre written.

I’ve also hit a bit of a conflict with my story so I’m just trying to work that out in my head and what I want to do about it. I’m sorry that sounds cryptic but I don’t want to say/do anything and then change my mind about it. Does that make sense?

i'm keen to see where the story will go now that sirius is in the picture (i love this concept!) can you gives us some snippets on how this is going to play out? like is it going to be a chance for harry to have some more positive role models to prevent him from getting into trouble (which we know remus is almost at his wits ends with haha), is it going to cause any trouble/arguments with remus & harry's relationship... so excited!! :)

I’m very excited to include Sirius in the story! I’ve recently listened to the audiobooks and got to understand Sirius as a character a bit more and how he talks and interacts with Harry. (I have ofc read the books too).

I am looking forward to Harry having another adult to interact with besides Remus and seeing how that plans out. Sirius is going to be more of an uncle figure than trying to overstep the role of father like Remus is. He respects Remus has already been in the role for 12 years.

Some scenes I have planned are Sirius, Harry and Remus going on a holiday, Sirius and Remus getting drunk in Hogsmeade, Harry getting into mischief at Sirius’s house (Remus is there too), Sirius sharing personal stories with Harry and finally Sirius handling Harry after trouble when Remus isn’t there.

Some of these scenes aren’t until much later in the story and I hope this relationship feels gradual! I already have some of these scenes written. :)

Harry chewed his lip as the healer drew up chairs with her wand for Remus and him to have a seat around Sirius's bed.
The wizard lying in the bed looked far better than the photographs of him had. His face was not so sunken and pale, but instead looked youthful, and his eyes were twinkling. His black hair had been brushed and cut to shoulder length, and he was in ruby red pyjamas, his hands over his blue blanket.

"I'm glad they didn't stick me in a green room." Sirius mused humorously. "That would be far too Slytherin."
Harry smirked despite his nerves, but Remus's face bore an expression of something different.
"You look well, Sirius," Remus mused lightly.
"I feel it," Sirius replied, shifting lightly in his bed. He tapped the covers lightly as he spoke to Harry, "You can sit on the bed if you'd like. I don't bite anymore." He smiled.
Harry looked at Remus, like a child did when they wanted their parent's approval. Remus gave him a reassuring nod, and Harry moved to the bed.
"You are so grown up." Sirius took Harry's hand into his. "And so, like your dad!"
Harry looked into the man's deeply hazel eyes; his pupils were dilated, and his face seemed so full of genuine joy.
"Everyone says I have my mother's eyes, though," Harry added before Sirius could say it.
"You certainly do," Sirius ran his thumb over Harry's hand lovingly.

that’s a shame that you don’t plan on continuing the only choice past this part. i really like it!

i can understand though that i suppose gof is a hard story to rewrite. excited to see what you write after it though as that sirius story sounds good and complex.

Yeah - I currently have no plans but never say never. I’ve messed around with different storylines for a second part but I just can’t imagine a scenario where Remus lets Harry compete and then in that instance - it’s either a whole year at home or drifting from canon while the tournament plays out in the background. While I suppose that could be fun to think of original storylines - it’s just not in my plans currently.

We’ve still got around 16 chapters left of this part however. :)

I’m also excited about the Sirius story! I’ve planned 4 chapters so far but it is still very much in the experimental phase. I do think I have a title though which I’m excited about. It’s starting to come to life!

You said Remus struggles with parenting. I’m wondering what elements he struggles with most and why he chooses to discipline as he does?

He does yes. Even though he has had Harry since he was tiny, I think all parents struggle with parenting and anyone that doesn’t would be lying!

He especially struggles in Harry’s third year as nothing seems to be getting through to him. He is incredibly reckless in all of his schooling years - more so as he always wants to help and save other people. Hogsmeade was teenage rebellion but his latest misbehaviour was outright reckless and against everything Remus has told him.

Remus chooses to discipline the way he does as that was how he was disciplined, as was everyone else he knew, to put it simply. He grew up very isolated apart from his Hogwarts friends so knows very little apart from what his dad did and those in his circle.

He grapples with it though and doesn’t seem to take it in his stride as much as his Dad did with him. I would not say it is particularly unrealistic for that era.

I don’t think it is always necessary for real life children now, however, as times have moved on but hey! I’m not a parent so maybe I’ll change my mind.

10. What genre is generally the easiest or most enjoyable for you to write? which is the hardest?

I (strangely) find any angsty scene easiest to write. I love when things are going pear shaped lol. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE fluff and cutesy scenes with Remus and Harry all cuddled up and content but angst seems to come the easiest to me.

As for the hardest… probably intense action scenes. For example, duels or something like that nature. I like writing the mundane everyday life scenes over action!

13. Do you have any writing projects/goals/plans you're working on/want to work on?

Yes! Once I’ve finished with The Only Choice, I don’t see myself re-hashing a version of the goblet of fire in all honesty.

Instead I have been thinking about a James/Sirius story where Sirius comes to live with James much earlier but solely told from Sirius POV and heavily focused on his adjusting to living with the Potters and having a normal family life eg, addressing the abuse he suffered. Think of ‘A Patch Work Family’ or ‘Crime and Punishment (both severitus works but that kind of tone).

14. Is there anything outside of your normal content that you want to write?

I’m not going to lie, I have yet to explore many fanfics outside the world of Harry Potter so I haven’t given it much thought!

Similarly I do not really have a second ‘fandom’ but perhaps The Vampire Diaries? Never say never.

"Perhaps I should go up there and talk to him. I wonder if maybe we have tackled this from the wrong angle. Maybe a more sympathetic approach would work for him to see reason."
"I don't disagree. Maybe everyone had been a little hard on him today, despite his actions." Lyall felt guilt creeping in about how he had just spoken to his son, even if he had not said anything awful. "His wounds also need healing."
Hope nodded. "I'll head up there now, before lunch. Make sure you stir the sauce while I'm gone. If I do get him to comply, I'll send for you."
Lyall nodded, taking a step towards the stove and stirring.

3. What's something you like about your writing?

Oooh this is actually quite tough. I think it’s improved a lot since my early chapters of TOC but I still struggle with comparing it to other peoples writing. I suppose I do actually like re-reading some of my later chapters now just in my own time without scrutinising it.

8. What part of The Only Choice is your favorite?

I’ve decided to go with my favourite chapter, so my favourite chapter would have to be my latest one, chapter 25. It marks the start of a new beginning I would say with the introduction of Sirius. I also like how I am trying to incorporate Snape (very loosely as it is not a severitus fic) and I think I managed to get the scenes to play out believably. I can’t say much more without spoiling it!

12. What’s a song or two you associate with The Only Choice?

This one stumped me for a while as nothing came to mind immediately. Recently though I have been listening to Noah Kahan while I write and one of his new songs “willing and able” reminds me a lot of Remus and Harry’s relationship as Harry constantly pushes the boundaries and Remus struggles with being a parent. Similarly, it also represents Sirius and Remus’s (soon to be) friendship to me. I have begun writing a few scenes with them for toc!

Also, I often think of “beautiful boy” by John Lennon purely because of the beginning matching exactly to when Lupin is teaching Harry the patronus charm and Harry really is Remus’s “beautiful boy”🥰
