[She bops herself on the head gently and offers him a tiny smile.]
Isn’t it strange how the past feels like a long time ago even though the present comes on so quickly?

[He laughs, shaking his head.]

[He asks holding it up to eye level looking at the little plant, poking a leaf]

It is. I am stateside on my contract now, no more deployments, roots settled and ready to help settle some other roots.

Not very often. Once every couple of years, really. Mostly for funerals, or an important birthday. I’m not very close with most of my family that lives there, to be honest.

I don’t know. I feel as if I miss it, but I wonder if it’s mainly nostalgia. I’ve been back a few times, and I always felt at home there. So I suppose I do. I moved here when I was very young, though. I was perhaps five or so. So I’ve been here for most of my life, really.
Oh wow, so yeah, fifteen years is a long time. But -- how often do you go back? I have never been out of New York, well I mean I am from Chicago, but yeah... it was a long time ago it feels like.

[She nods, gesturing with her hands excitedly as she speaks.]
Yes! In Russia they are mandatory, we use them on all of our official documents and everything.. In fact, usually when you speak to someone, especially someone you do not know very well, you say their given name as well as the patronymic. So someone would call me Ana Ilyinichna. If you know someone very well, then you can call them a diminutive, like a nickname that is derived from their given name. Usually it is only family or very close friends, you know?

I think a succulent would be best, cute little desert plants that don’t need much water -- so, you know, you could bond over being in the desert.

A patronymic. It’s how we name babies in Russia. You get a given name, a patronymic, and then your family name. The patronymic is partly made up of your father’s given name. So mine is Ilyinichna, which means that Ilya is my father and I am his daughter. If I were a boy, it would be Ilyich. See?
