the women’s march should be for all women… and yet it’s not. and i was hoping it would be better this year but it’s become increasingly clear that it’s only for cis white women.
the transphobic signs, the co-opting of spaces, the pussy hats. oh the pussy hats.
centering PINK pussy hats as a symbol of this movement is so wrong. while these hats weren’t a creation of the women’s march organizers directly, they have become a recognized symbol. we literally could have picked any other nasty thing trump has said to focus on and yet we chose his statement about genitalia and chose to cling to it for dear life. why must all the posters say “pussy grabs back” when 1, not all women have a pussy, 2, not all pussies are pink and 3, feminism is the equality of ALL genders. by excluding the experience of non-binary, trans-feminine, and other folks who identity in the feminine space and instead centering the conversation on genitalia (which has nothing to do with gender) we are hindering our own damn cause.
we need to do better. we need to include all women, speak up for all women, make space for all women, make it clear there is and always will & should be space for ALL women and feminine-identified people. not just cisgender heterosexual white women.
