At this point half the reason I still put up with TiKTok is the insane bakers and cooks. I mean LOOK AT THIS.
There was a small, small problem with the story that Simon really was starting to hope wouldn't come back to bite him. He stood around with the other recruits, listening to them speak, thinking back on the conversation with Sir Joshua. It's out there now that he claims to come from a Silver village... But he wasn't even sure what people of that kingdom had even sounded like. Would he be found out if his accent wasn't correct? Or would they just not question it, thinking he's trying very hard to fit in? Listening to these recruits, he didn't even know what they were saying, but he was starting to pick up different words that seemed pretty common.
Simon shifted back on his heels, a bit of himself peeking through as he was pulling at the fingers on one of his gloves. Was he really ready for this? The others here certainly seemed well trained with the sword. Or at least they knew enough to not raise suspicion. The worry was starting build in his stomach. Did he even stand a chance here? He thought he had prepared enough on the way here, but the journey was nothing compared to being here in this castle, surrounded completely by people who would kill him once they find out.
Calm.
The little voice in the back of his mind reminded him, and he felt at ease once more. Slowly, he dropped his hands and his demeanor relaxed. He was here to find information, any little thing he could to send back home to ensure the Gold Kingdoms destruction. That was his only task. He just needed to remain calm.
It was in that moment that he realized the rest of the recruits were moving around him, backing out of the way of someone else. One of the Gold knights perhaps? There had been talk of the head of the knights, the one who he guessed the others answered to the most. What was the name that advisor had said? Sir North?
The sword tapping against his boot drew his attention, but he was caught off guard by the one holding it. A woman, a lady knight? That seemed so strange to him. Maybe it was common here, but he sure knew of no lady taking up a blade. Not that his life before would have exposed him to as much anyway.
"Frumo--" it came out like a breath, but he quickly cleared his throat, closing his eyes for just a second as he turned to face her directly, "Forgive me. I take it you must be Sir North, yes?" He gave a little smile as he stepped back, turning to take a sword from the hand of one of the other recruits, who just stepped back in response without a fuss, "I have, indeed. I came to prove I am worthy to protect. Give new purpose to my life in a new land. Maybe you will deem me well enough," he held his sword up to her, "I can only hope, anyway."

Why did it seem like it was a sort of cutting comment from Joe? Since she's your best friend. Maybe his paranoia was still too high, but it felt almost judgmental. Like he didn't believe him. But that couldn't be it. He brushed the thought away as quickly as it popped up. It was just the anxiety talking again, he was sure of that.
"If I told her about every little almost panic attack, she might have me committed or something," he laughed a little as he took the money and counted it out into the register, handing him his change, "I've been taking care of myself for long enough now, I can handle it." Things had been getting easier lately, Simon really felt like he had a good handle on his life. Not worried about the past as much, his present was stable, he could finally step back and think about the future. Taking over the bakery was one step. Next step... He still needed to work up the nerve for.
As Joe agreed to let Simon be the one to talk to North, Simon smiled a bit wider. He really seemed to care about her, even if they'd one known each other a short time. A sincerity to his words Simon believed, "North is a great woman who deserves a good guy. Simple as that." He gave a little wave as he watched him leave, exhaling a sigh.
Leaning against the counter, Simon folded his arms. It was a slow day, most of their regular customers came early in the day, it left him enough free time to tidy up a bit. He walked back into the back room, leaning against the fridge door again as he took his phone out from his back pocket. Unlocking it opened it back to the open text conversation with Josh and the message he had been writing and deleting again and again. Different invitations for drinks or just asking if he would be free. He dropped his hand with the phone again, another unsent message deleted. He'd never had any issues asking people out before, so why was this so hard?
Simon's quiet debate was interrupted as he heard customers coming in the front door again. He took a breath and tucked the phone away again. Another time.

Simon boxed up the pie and tart separately, quick and swift as if the motion was second nature to him. He didn't even really need to focus on it, even as he taped the boxed shut and stacked them together. Setting them by the register, he flashed a smile up at Joe now, the previous anxiety pushed away. He rang up the treats and gave him the total for him to pay.
"Uh - sorry, yeah, no I'm okay. It's just a lot on my plate and on my mind, that's all," he forced a smile, shaking his head, "It's just - emotions. They can control us if we don't control them. But, I'm fine, seriously... Though I would appreciate if you kept from telling any of this to North. She doesn't need to worry any more about me, I can handle this."
Simon hasn't had a bad panic episode in a long time. This wasn't really up there, but it would probably be enough to worry her. He really didn't want the questions about what happened. Maybe they can talk about it at some point, he'd just have to think of a way to make sure Joe knew it wasn't his fault. He was just making conversation, that's all.
"Tell you what," he shrugged a shoulder, leaning to one side, "I can talk to her and maybe we can have some sort of proper meeting. Just, hang out. I should get to know the guy my best friend is talking to after all, right?" He smiled again, still a bit of tension on it, but he tried to stay relaxed.

Simon shook his hand with a nod, keeping that same smile. It was always nice to hear how people talked about you, but it wasn't as if he ever did anything to make anyone feel to the contrary. Simon just liked to help however he could, it's the way he's always been. Easy going in his life, now that he had a good handle on it anyway. It had taken years for him to find a rhythm and be able to move on from the past he can't remember.
Then - Family is worth a lot...? "Huh..." Simon's smile faded a bit, though he didn't really realize it, “Oh, uh... Yeah... I guess so.” The words rung in his mind, but he couldn't figure why. They just... Felt wrong somehow. Did it have to do with the family he can't remember, the brother he lost? That bit of panic was starting to rise again.
Simon closed his eyes briefly, taking a sharp breath before he refocused his eyes on Joe. Lingering on those thoughts were never good, they always led to more panic and that wasn't what he needed right now. He was fine, everything was okay. He forced the little smile back, recalling back on what Joe had said he wanted.
"Custard tart, and you said key lime pie right? That's North's favorite," he shook his head, putting in the order in the register, "I should have one ready. Let me just go grab that for you." Without giving Joe much time to answer, he nodded to him and turned to walk towards the back, the fridge where they kept the pies. He just needed a moment, just one moment to breathe. Sucking in the cool air tainted by sweets felt good. Taking a moment, he closed the door behind him and just leaned against it. With the quiet around him, he found it much easier to focus. A few deep breaths later and he felt a good enough to get through the rest of this conversation. He hoped Joe didn’t think anything weird about him. It wasn’t his fault, Simon knew that.
He grabbed one of the key lime pies and the custard tart and walked back out with them to the counter to box them up, keeping his eyes down instead of looking up at Joe.

"Oh, wait, then you're Joe, right?" Simon seemed to relax a bit at that revelation. Not some thug trying to get back at North or "the man", just a guy she'd been talking to. That was at least enough to lessen his nerves a bit, he returned the half smile, lowering his shoulders, "She has mentioned you. Sorry, I didn't mean to assume anything - I mean, you know the sort of people she deals with on the daily, I'm sure."
He held his hand out to him over the counter towards Joe, "Right, yes, I'm Simon -" he took his hand back quickly, realizing it was covered in flour, and wiped it off on his apron before holding it out again, "North is my closest friend, yeah. We've known each other for some years now."
North and Josh were his closest. friends, North being the one that has really been there the most. She helped him through so much, especially in the beginning. He could imagine a better person to rely on. Josh was far more busy than North was, so they didn’t hang out nearly as much. Besides, he was just closer to her anyway.
“That’s nice of you to stop by. Yeah, things are just getting running. I took this place over from the owners recently,” he looked around with a fond smile as he spoke, “They’ve been like family since they took me in, so, it was nice of them to let me run it. But, everything is baked fresh. So, what’s your poison?” He turns the smile to Joe again, genuine as the sparkle in his eyes as he spoke about the baked goods.

Thinking about little intimacies. Our dishes drying by the sink. Your socks and my socks in the same drawer. My toothbrush in the same toothbrush holder as yours. How simple a thing, how massive a thing as that.
" I know you, " he stated at the counter of the bake shop. Idly hovering there with attention on their pastries, Joe truly had his sights set on the blond male. " At least I know of you. You're - friends with North right? "
There was a pause, a hesitation when this stranger said he knew him. It was almost panic. How had he known him? There was a lot Simon couldn't remember about his life, did he recognize him from then? This guy seemed like they could be about the same age... Did he know something -?
Simon exhales a breath he'd been holding when he mentioned North. The action might not have been as discreet as he would have liked, but he tried to play off the sudden adrenaline running through him as he continued cleaning the counter. He bent down to reach for something underneath, another rag or cleaner or maybe even just to take a breath to calm his now frayed nerves.
"Uh, yeah," Simon stood up straight again, returning with nothing as he just idly pulled at a rubber bracelet on his wrist, "Sorry, did you know North? If this is something about her job, I'd appreciate being left out of it. It's got nothing to do with me."
Maybe it was just a fear or paranoia of his, since no one had ever come to him to get back at North for something, but he knows there's plenty of shady people who come through her office for bonds. And he's been there enough for people to know him. Not that this guy seemed particularly dangerous, but bringing up North like that was just a little suspicious to him.
