I totally agree with you. Will, who has always been looked after and surrounded by people, is now taking care of Mack, who has always been everyone's go-to person (even his coaches depended on him). I also think that, on the ice, Mack needs to be the person who manages everything, the one everyone relies on and takes seriously. That's why, off the ice, and especially with Will, he allows himself to be a bit of a goofball and unwind. On the ice, it's his big brother side that takes over (the one who looked after Charlie and RJ), and off the ice, it's his little brother side that takes over (the one who likes to tease Aiden).

even his coaches depend on him…. much to think about…. warso letting an 18 yo (at the time) run his program was truly something. one thing that stood out to me the most when i saw the sharks irl was how much will spoke to the refs/other players on ice. twas almost like mack had already designated himself captain and will alternate. and i do think will takes a lot of pride in being the “mack handler” if you will. he seems very smug (not necessarily in a bad way) about the fact that he understands mack and can bring him back down to earth. i think about rickbrini saying that he was inconsolable after the loss etc etc etc vs will not giving up any information besides oh yeah we talked about it. like he takes mack so seriously and does not play when it comes to him. like inconsolable to YOU maybe. personally all i had to do was put on some spa sounds a movie play with his hair and boom. mack handled crisis averted.

and pls don’t think this is me babying or infantilizing mack. like we’ve all seen him dominate on the ice we know what he is capable of. but it’s nice to know there is someone in his corner who lets him relax and have fun and, as dilfbrini put it, find joy and release 🚬

So I just spent a week at a sports camp with basically zero internet access, and weirdly it gave me more insight into willmack

Being around male athletes 24/7 really puts into perspective how insanely masculine most men's sports culture still is. There's this constant pressure to perform a certain version of masculinity, and showing any kind of softness almost feels like you're going against the grain.

I genuinely can't imagine any of the guys from my boxing team casually saying they spend their free time baking cakes or making chocolate, they'd get laughed at and clowned relentlessly.

Which is why I think Will and Mack are incredibly lucky, not because they're different, but because they seem to be in an environment where they can be different without having to hide it.

The fact that will can talk about baking or mack can be openly affectionate and nobody in the room seems interested in policing them for it feels kind of miraculous. They get to exist as these soft, slightly dorky versions of themselves in one of the most hypermasculine environments imaginable, and their teammates seem to meet them with affection instead of ridicule.

Makes me appreciate Sharks team culture even more. I think that's such a rare thing, finding a locker room where you don't have to harden yourself to belong is honestly one of the greatest gifts you can have.
