Can you believe we open in just one week?! One of our scenes deals with a product developed by cis men with the safety of women in mind, but that falls short on functionality. The product claims to solve a problem faced by women and trans or gender non-conforming people, but we think the product doesn’t solve much at all. When a product addresses different concerns than fit the needs of the intended demographic, it becomes clear that no one who is supposedly being “helped” was actually in the room for the development process. Only 30% of women who earn bachelor’s degrees in engineering are still working in the field 20 years later, and 30% of those who left site organizational culture as their reason for leaving. One idea our new show “Error 404: Engineers Not Found” deals with is “Survive-ability” in the workplace. This idea spans a couple of different scenes as we look at the limited opportunities for mentorship for women and trans/gnc people in STEM. We dealt with the idea of some characters having figured out how to carve the path for themselves and others in their fields, and discussed coddling by male bosses and men who are hesitant to be mentors behind closed doors in the “Me Too” era who subsequently limit the opportunities of deserving and talented young people. We also deal with the “imposter syndrome” at the other end of the spectrum, feeling as though opportunities are only being given to you to fulfill a quota.
